Electronics design for circularity using a fuzzy decision making system

  • The increasing number of electronic products increases the amount of the so called e-waste. One option for e-waste reduction is recycling of electronic systems and components, thus also increasing resource efficiency. Recyclability as a concept of circular economy is significantly influenced in the design phase of a system. In this phase, the designer typically applies his qualitative expert knowledge to achieve the quantitative and qualitative design objectives. The current paper introduces a method for the design of electronic devices with a focus on design for circularity. Based on concepts from fuzzy decision making, the concept aims at choosing design decisions based on given design objectives and a rule base relating these objectives and decisions. Both, design objectives as well as design decisions are given by linguistic variables. The method is illustrated based on a simple electronic design example.
