Onboarding tutorials to enhance game user experience in VR

  • This study investigates the impact of an onboarding tutorial on player experience in ClueX, a virtual reality (VR) adaptation of the board game Cluedo augmented with interactive VR mechanics and immersive elements. A between-subjects experiment was conducted with two conditions: participants receiving a structured onboarding tutorial, and participants without any prior guidance. To capture both game-specific experiences and broader user experience (UX) dimensions, the Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ) was employed while the meCUE questionnaire was used to evaluate pragmatic and hedonic qualities. The analysis of the data indicated that the onboarding tutorial improved perceived competence, reduced negative effect, and enhanced both pragmatic and hedonic user experience components. The results highlight the importance of onboarding strategies for enhancing the overall engagement and enjoyment in VR games.
