Evaluation of commercially available MHz magnetic materials using a virtual datasheet framework

  • The adoption of GaN and SiC devices enables power converters to operate in the MHz range, requiring careful selection of magnetic materials to manage core loss and improve power density. To address the lack of a comprehensive overview of available materials, this article presents a comparative evaluation of 45 commercially available materials from 15 different manufacturers, all specified for operation above 1 MHz. An interactive virtual datasheet approach, based on prior work but extended to the MHz range, is introduced to process manufacturer-supplied data. The tool enables performance evaluation and direct comparison of core loss characteristics across materials using power loss density data and standard metrics such as the performance factor. The results provide practical guidance for selecting high-frequency core materials in power converter applications where core loss is a key constraint in magnetic component design.
