MXene/aramid nanofiber-coated fabric with low infrared emissivity and high conductivity for unleashing dynamic infrared camouflage potential

  • With the rapid development of infrared detection technology, materials with dynamically tunable infrared radiation properties have driven advancements in infrared camouflage. When the surrounding environment significantly varies, a wide range of infrared modulations are required to provide infrared camouflage for practical applications. The two-dimensional transition metal carbide/nitride (MXene) coated fabric with multifunction has been widespread application in thermal management and infrared camouflage. In this work, the MXene integrated aramid nanofibers (ANFs), named as MA, was deposited onto the surface of cotton fabric (labeled as MAF) using vacuum-assisted filtration, which the MA coating during the fabrication process reduced the infrared emissivity of cotton fabric. The results demonstrated that MAF exhibited a low infrared emissivity of 0.408, showcasing exceptional infrared camouflage performance. Additionally, the MAFs have the excellent electrical conductivity of 266.64 S/m due to the MXene coating. This functional MAF can adjust the radiation temperature of the target through Joule heating to achieve infrared disguise. These two effects collectively broadened the overall infrared characteristics modulation range of MAF. In addition, the MAF also has ultra-high average light absorption of 0.916. Therefore, this functional MAF achieves solar heating for warmth. With an eco-friendly, scalable production process, MAF emerges as a top contender for next-gen smart wearable camouflage apparel.
