”I have never seen one who loves virtue as much as he loves beauty,” Confucius once said. If beauty is more important as goodness, it becomes clear why people invest so much effort in their first impression. The aesthetic of faces has many aspects and there is a strong correlation to all characteristics of humans, like age and gender. Often, research on aesthetics by social and ethic scientists lacks sufficient labelled data and the support of machine vision tools. In this position paper we propose the Aesthetic-Faces dataset, containing training data which is labelled by Chinese and German annotators. As a combination of three image subsets, the AF-dataset consists of European, Asian and African people. The research communities in machine learning, aesthetics and social ethics can benefit from our dataset and our toolbox. The toolbox provides many functions for machine learning with state-of-the-art CNNs and an Extreme-Gradient-Boosting regressor, but also 3D Morphable Model technolo gies for face shape evaluation and we discuss how to train an aesthetic estimator considering culture and ethics.
3D assisted 2D face recognition involves the process of reconstructing 3D faces from 2D images and solving the problem of face recognition in 3D. To facilitate the use of deep neural networks, a 3D face, normally represented as a 3D mesh of vertices and its corresponding surface texture, is remapped to image-like square isomaps by a conformal mapping. Based on previous work, we assume that face recognition benefits more from texture. In this work, we focus on the surface texture and its discriminatory information content for recognition purposes. Our approach is to prepare a 3D mesh, the corresponding surface texture and the original 2D image as triple input for the recognition network, to show that 3D data is useful for face recognition. Texture enhancement methods to control the texture fusion process are introduced and we adapt data augmentation methods. Our results show that texture-map-based face recognition can not only compete with state-of-the-art systems under the same precon ditions but also outperforms standard 2D methods from recent years.
In current times, a lot of new business opportunities appeared using the potential of the Internet and related digital technologies, like Internet of Things, services computing, cloud computing, big data with analytics, mobile systems, collaboration networks, and cyber physical systems. Enterprises are presently transforming their strategy, culture, processes, and their information systems to become more digital. The digital transformation deeply disrupts existing enterprises and economies. Digitization fosters the development of IT environments with many rather small and distributed structures, like Internet of Things. This has a strong impact for architecting digital services and products. The change from a closed-world modeling perspective to more flexible open-world and living software and system architectures defines the moving context for adaptable and evolutionary software approaches, which are essential to enable the digital transformation. In this paper, we are putting a spotlight to service oriented software evolution to support the digital transformation with micro granular digital architectures for digital services and products.
Scenario-based analysis is a comprehensive technique to evaluate software quality and can provide more detailed insights than e.g. maintainability metrics. Since such methods typically require significant manual effort, we designed a lightweight scenario-based evolvability evaluation method. To increase efficiency and to limit assumptions, the method exclusively targets service- and microservice-based systems. Additionally, we implemented web-based tool support for each step. Method and tool were also evaluated with a survey (N=40) that focused on change effort estimation techniques and hands-on interviews (N=7) that focused on usability. Based on the evaluation results, we improved method and tool support further. To increase reuse and transparency, the web-based application as well as all survey and interview artifacts are publicly available on GitHub. In its current state, the tool-supported method is ready for first industry case studies.
AI-based prediction and recommender systems are widely used in various industry sectors. However, general acceptance of AI-enabled systems is still widely uninvestigated. Therefore, firstly we conducted a survey with 559 respondents. Findings suggested that AI-enabled systems should be fair, transparent, consider personality traits and perform tasks efficiently. Secondly, we developed a system for the Facial Beauty Prediction (FBP) benchmark that automatically evaluates facial attractiveness. As our previous experiments have proven, these results are usually highly correlated with human ratings. Consequently they also reflect human bias in annotations. An upcoming challenge for scientists is to provide training data and AI algorithms that can withstand distorted information. In this work, we introduce AntiDiscriminationNet (ADN), a superior attractiveness prediction network. We propose a new method to generate an unbiased convolutional neural network (CNN) to improve the fairn ess of machine learning in facial dataset. To train unbiased networks we generate synthetic images and weight training data for anti-discrimination assessments towards different ethnicities. Additionally, we introduce an approach with entropy penalty terms to reduce the bias of our CNN. Our research provides insights in how to train and build fair machine learning models for facial image analysis by minimising implicit biases. Our AntiDiscriminationNet finally outperforms all competitors in the FBP benchmark by achieving a Pearson correlation coefficient of PCC = 0.9601.

The digital transformation profoundly disrupts existing enterprises and economies. Digitization fosters the development of IT environments with many rather small and distributed structures, like the Internet of Things, microservices, or other micro-granular elements. Architecting micro-granular structures have a substantial impact on architecting digital services and products. The change from a closed-world modeling perspective to more flexible Open World of living software and system architectures defines the context for flexible and evolutionary software approaches, which are essential to enable the digital transformation. In this paper, we are revealing multiple perspectives of digital enterprise architecture and decisions to effectively support value and service oriented software systems for intelligent digital services and products.
Many future Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) systems may be pervasive SmartLife applications that provide real-time support for users in everyday tasks and situations. Development of such applications will be challenging, but in this position paper we argue that their ongoing maintenance may be even more so. Ontological modelling of the application may help to ease this burden, but maintainers need to understand a system at many levels, from a broad architectural perspective down to the internals of deployed components. Thus we will need consistent models that span the range of views, from business processes through system architecture to maintainable code. We provide an initial example of such a modelling approach and illustrate its application in a semantic browser to aid in software maintenance tasks.
Powered by e-commerce and vital in the manufacturing industry, intralogistics became an increasingly important and labour-intensive process. In highly standardized automation-friendly environments, such as the automotive sector, most of efficiently automatable intralogistics tasks have already been automated. Due to aging population in EU and ergonomic regulations, the urge to automate intralogistics tasks became consistent also where product and process standardization is lower. That is the case of the production line or cell material supply process, where an increasing number of product variants and individually customized products combined with the necessary ability of reacting to changes in market conditions led to smaller and more frequent replenishment to the points of use in the production plant and to the chaotic addition of production cells in shop floor layout. This led in turn to inevitable traffic growth with unforeseeable related delays and increased level of safety threats and accidents. In this paper, we use the structured approach of the Quality Interaction Function Deployment to analyse the process of supply of assembly lines, seeking the most efficient combination of automation and manual labour, satisfying all stakeholders´ requirements. Results are presented and discussed.
The paper focuses on a recently introduced paradigm for the logistic process of picking, with respect to the man-to-goods and goods-to-man concept: the robot to-goods. First the task and system architecture of the fast deployable autonomous commissioning system are described, then the economic efficiency of the system is analysed in a real business case scenario using a simplified method, which is explained and discussed. The clearly positive net present value of the investment and the short payback period obtained in the business case prove how the robot-to-goods paradigm for the commissioning process, implemented through the automation of the forklift platform, is economically attractive for small and medium size enterprises.
Virtual Reality (VR) technology has the potential to support knowledge communication in several sectors. Still, when educators make use of immersive VR technology in favor of presenting their knowledge, their audience within the same room may not be able to see them anymore due to wearing head-mounted displays (HMDs). In this paper, we propose the Avatar2Avatar system and design, which augments the visual aspect during such a knowledge presentation. Avatar2Avatar enables users to see both a realistic representation of their respective counterpart and the virtual environment at the same time. We point out several design aspects of such a system and address design challenges and possibilities that arose during implementation. We specifically explore opportunities of a system design for integrating 2D video-avatars in existing roomscale VR setups. An additional user study indicates a positive impact concerning spatial presence when using Avatar2Avatar.
