Database management systems (DBMS) are critical performance components in large scale applications under modern update intensive workloads. Additional access paths accelerate look-up performance in DBMS for frequently queried attributes, but the required maintenance slows down update performance. The ubiquitous B+ tree is a commonly used key-indexed access path that is able to support many required functionalities with logarithmic access time to requested records. Modern processing and storage technologies and their characteristics require reconsideration of matured indexing approaches for today's workloads. Partitioned B-trees (PBT) leverage characteristics of modern hardware technologies and complex memory hierarchies as well as high update rates and changes in workloads by maintaining partitions within one single B+-Tree. This paper includes an experimental evaluation of PBTs optimized write pattern and performance improvements. With PBT transactional throughput under TPC-C increases 30%; PBT results in beneficial sequential write patterns even in presence of updates and maintenance operations.
Software development consists to a large extend of humanbased processes with continuously increasing demands regarding interdisciplinary team work. Understanding the dynamics of software teams can be seen as highly important to successful project execution. Hence, for future project managers, knowledge about non-technical processes in teams is significant. In this paper, we present a course unit that provides an environment in which students can learn and experience the impact of group dynamics on project performance and quality. The course unit uses the Tuckman model as theoretical framework, and borrows from controlled experiments to organize and implement its practical parts in which students then experience the effects of, e.g., time pressure, resource bottlenecks, staff turnover, loss of key personnel, and other stress factors. We provide a detailed design of the course unit to allow for implementation in further software project management courses. Furthermore, we provide experiences obtained from two instances of this unit conducted in Munich and Karlskrona with 36 graduate students. We observed students building awareness of stress factors and developing counter measures to reduce impact of those factors. Moreover, students experienced what problems occur when teams work under stress and how to form a performing team despite exceptional situations.
Using measurement and simulation for understanding distributed development processes in the Cloud

Organizations increasingly develop software in a distributed manner. The Cloud provides an environment to create and maintain software-based products and services. Currently, it is widely unknown which software processes are suited for Cloud-based development and what their effects in specific contexts are. This paper presents a process simulation to study distributed development in the Cloud. We contribute a simulation model, which helps analyzing different project parameters and their impact on projects carried out in the Cloud. The simulator helps reproducing activities, developers, issues and events in the project, and it generates statistics, e.g., on throughput, total time, and lead and cycle time. The aim of this simulation model is thus to analyze the tradeoffs regarding throughput, total time, project size, and team size. Furthermore, the modified simulation model aims to help project managers select the most suitable planning alternative. Based on observed projects in Finland and Spain, we simulated a distributed project using artificial and real data. Particularly, we studied the variables project size, team size, throughput, and total project duration. A comparison of the real project data with the results obtained from the simulation shows the simulation producing results close to the real data, and we could successfully replicate a distributed software project. By improving the understanding of distributed development processes, our simulation model thus supports project managers in their decision-making.
Avatars are in use when interacting in virtual environments in different contexts, in collaborative work, as well as in gaming and also in virtual meetings with friends. Therefore it is important to understand how the relationship between user and avatar works. In this study, an online survey is used to determine how the perception of an avatar changes in different contexts by relating it to existing avatar relationship typologies. Additionally, it is determined whether in each context a realistic, abstract or comic-like representation is preferred by the participants. One result was a preference of low poly representations in the work context, which are associated with the perception of the avatar as a tool. In the context of meeting friends, a realistic representation is perceived as more appropriate, which is perceived as an accurate self-representation. In the gaming context, the results are less clear, which can be attributed to different gaming preferences. Here, unlike in the other contexts, a comic-like representation is also perceived as appropriate, which is associated with the perception of the avatar as a friend. A symbiotic user-avatar relationship is not directly related to any form of representation, but always lies in the midfield, which is attributed to the fact that it represents a whole spectrum between other categories.
Today, companies face increasing market dynamics, rapidly evolving technologies, and rapid changes in customer behavior. Traditional approaches to product development typically fail in such environments and require companies to transform their often feature-driven mindset into a product-led mindset. A promising first step on the way to a product-led company is a better understanding of how product planning can be adapted to the requirements of an increasingly dynamic and uncertain market environment in the sense of product roadmapping. The authors developed the DEEP product roadmap assessment tool to help companies evaluate their current product roadmap practices and identify appropriate actions to transition to a more product-led company. Objective: The goal of this paper is to gain insight into the applicability and usefulness of version 1.1 of the DEEP model. In addition, the benefits, and implications of using the DEEP model in corporate contexts will be explored. Method: We conducted a multiple case study in which participants were observed using the DEEP model. We then interviewed each participant to understand their perceptions of the DEEP model. In addition, we conducted interviews with each company's product management department to learn how the application of the DEEP model influenced their attitudes toward product roadmapping. Results: The study showed that by applying the DEEP model, participants better understood which artifacts and methods were critical to product roadmapping success in a dynamic and uncertain market environment. In addition, the application of the DEEP model helped convince management and other stakeholders of the need to change current product roadmapping practices. The application also proved to be a suitable starting point for the transformation in the participating companies.
A large body of literature is concerned with models of presence— the sensory illusion of being part of a virtual scene— but there is still no general agreement on how to measure it objectively and reliably. For the presented study, we applied contemporary theory to measure presence in virtual reality. Thirty-seven participants explored an existing commercial game in order to complete a collection task. Two startle events were naturally embedded in the game progression to evoke physical reactions and head tracking data was collected in response to these events. Subjective presence was recorded using a post-study questionnaire and real-time assessments. Our novel implementation of behavioral measures lead to insights which could inform future presence research: We propose a measure in which startle reflexes are evoked through specific events in the virtual environment, and head tracking data is compared to the range and speed of baseline interactions.
Towards a practical maintainability quality model for service- and microservice-based systems

Although current literature mentions a lot of different metrics related to the maintainability of service-based systems (SBSs), there is no comprehensive quality model (QM) with automatic evaluation and practical focus. To fill this gap, we propose a Maintainability Model for Services (MM4S), a layered maintainability QM consisting of service properties (SPs) related with automatically collectable Service Metrics (SMs). This research artifact created within an ongoing Design Science Research (DSR) project is the first version ready for detailed evaluation and critical feedback. The goal of MM4S is to serve as a simple and practical tool for basic maintainability estimation and control in the context of BSs and their specialization
microservice-based systems (μSBSs).
For large-scale processes as implemented in organizations that develop software in regulated domains, comprehensive software process models are implemented, e.g., for compliance requirements. Creating and evolving such processes is demanding and requires software engineers having substantial modeling skills to create consistent and certifiable processes. While teaching process engineering to students, we observed issues in providing and explaining models. In this paper, we present an exploratory study in which we aim to shed light on the challenges students face when it comes to modeling. Our findings show that students are capable of doing basic modeling tasks, yet, fail in utilizing models correctly. We conclude that the required skills, notably abstraction and solution development, are underdeveloped due to missing practice and routine. Since modeling is key to many software engineering disciplines, we advocate for intensifying modeling activities in teaching.
The tale of 1000 cores: an evaluation of concurrency control on real(ly) large multi-socket hardware

In this paper, we set out the goal to revisit the results of “Starring into the Abyss [...] of Concurrency Control with [1000] Cores” and analyse in-memory DBMSs on today’s large hardware. Despite the original assumption of the authors, today we do not see single-socket CPUs with 1000 cores. Instead multi-socket hardware made its way into production data centres. Hence, we follow up on this prior work with an evaluation of the characteristics of concurrency control schemes on real production multi-socket hardware with 1568 cores. To our surprise, we made several interesting findings which we report on in this paper.
Electromigration (EM) is becoming a progressively severe reliability challenge due to increased interconnect current densities. A shift from traditional (post-layout) EM verification to robust (pro-active) EM aware design - where the circuit layout is designed with individual EM-robust solutions - is urgently needed. This tutorial will give an overview of EM and its effects on the reliability of present and future integrated circuits (ICs). We introduce the physical EM process and present its specific characteristics that can be affected during physical design. Examples of EM countermeasures which are applied in today’s commercial design flows are presented. We show how to improve the EM-robustness of metallization patterns and we also consider mission proiles to obtain application-oriented current density limits. The increasing interaction of EM with thermal migration is investigated as well. We conclude with a discussion of application examples to shift from the current post layout EM verification towards an EM aware physical design process. Its methodologies, such as EM-aware routing, increase the EM-robustness of the layout with the overall goal of reducing the negative impact of EM on the circuit’s reliability.
Software process improvement (SPI) is around for decades: frameworks are proposed, success factors are studied, and experiences have been reported. However, the sheer mass of concepts, approaches, and standards published over the years overwhelms practitioners as well as researchers. What is out there? Are there new emerging approaches? What are open issues? Still, we struggle to answer the question for what is the current state of SPI and related research? In this paper, we present initial results from a systematic mapping study to shed light on the field of SPI and to draw conclusions for future research directions. An analysis of 635 publications draws a big picture of SPI-related research of the past 25 years. Our study shows a high number of solution proposals, experience reports, and secondary studies, but only few theories. In particular, standard SPI models like CMMI and ISO/IEC 15504 are analyzed, enhanced, and evaluated for applicability, whereas these standards are critically discussed from the perspective of SPI in small-to- medium-sized companies, which leads to new specialized frameworks. Furthermore, we find a growing interest in success factors to aid companies in conducting SPI.
In this paper, we present a new approach for achieving robust performance of data structures making it easier to reuse the same design for different hardware generations but also for different workloads. To achieve robust performance, the main idea is to strictly separate the data structure design from the actual strategies to execute access operations and adjust the actual execution strategies by means of so-called configurations instead of hard-wiring the execution strategy into the data structure. In our evaluation we demonstrate the benefits of this configuration approach for individual data structures as well as complex OLTP workloads.
Current data-intensive systems suffer from scalability as they transfer massive amounts of data to the host DBMS to process it there. Novel near-data processing (NDP) DBMS architectures and smart storage can provably reduce the impact of raw data movement. However, transferring the result-set of an NDP operation may increase the data movement, and thus, the performance overhead. In this paper, we introduce a set of in-situ NDP result-set management techniques, such as spilling, materialization, and reuse. Our evaluation indicates a performance improvement of 1.13 × to 400 ×.
We present a fully automatic approach to real-time 3D face reconstruction from monocular in-the-wild videos. We use a 3D morphable face model to obtain a semi-dense shape and combine it with a fast median-based super-resolution technique to obtain a high-fidelity textured 3D face model. Our system does not need prior training and is designed to work in uncontrolled scenarios.
Real Time Charging (RTC) applications that reside in the telecommunications domain have the need for extremely fast database transactions. Today´s providers rely mostly on in-memory databases for this kind of information processing. A flexible and modular benchmark suite specifically designed for this domain provides a valuable framework to test the performance of different DB candidates. Besides a data and a load generator, the suite also includes decoupled database connectors and use case components for convenient customization and extension. Such easily produced test results can be used as guidance for choosing a subset of candidates for further tuning/testing and finally evaluating the database most suited to the chosen use cases. This is why our benchmark suite can be of value for choosing databases for RTC use cases.
Due to decreased mobility or families living apart, older adults are especially vulnerable to the issue of social isolation. Literature suggests that technology can help to prevent this isolation. The present work addresses an approach to participate in society by sharing knowledge that is cherished. We propose the cooking recipe exchange application PrecRec for older adults to make them feel precious and valued. PrecRec has been developed and evaluated in an iterative process with eleven older adults. The results show that a broad perspective has to be taken into account when designing such systems.
The performance and scalability of modern data-intensive systems are limited by massive data movement of growing datasets across the whole memory hierarchy to the CPUs. Such traditional processor-centric DBMS architectures are bandwidth- and latency-bound. Processing-in-Memory (PIM) designs seek to overcome these limitations by integrating memory and processing functionality on the same chip. PIM targets near- or in-memory data processing, leveraging the greater in-situ parallelism and bandwidth.
In this paper, we introduce pimDB and provide an initial comparison of processor-centric and PIM-DBMS approaches under different aspects, such as scalability and parallelism, cache-awareness, or PIM-specific compute/bandwidth tradeoffs. The evaluation is performed end-to-end on a real PIM hardware system from UPMEM.
We investigated the influence of body shape and pose on the perception of physical strength and social power for male virtual characters. In the first experiment, participants judged the physical strength of varying body shapes, derived from a statistical 3D body model. Based on these ratings, we determined three body shapes (weak, average, and strong) and animated them with a set of power poses for the second experiment. Participants rated how strong or powerful they perceived virtual characters of varying body shapes that were displayed in different poses. Our results show that perception of physical strength was mainly driven by the shape of the body. However, the social attribute of power was influenced by an interaction between pose and shape. Specifically, the effect of pose on power ratings was greater for weak body shapes. These results demonstrate that a character with a weak shape can be perceived as more powerful when in a high-power pose.
The vast majority of state-of-the-art integrated circuits are mixed-signal chips. While the design of the digital parts of the ICs is highly automated, the design of the analog circuitry is largely done manually; it is very time-consuming; and prone to error. Among the reasons generally listed for this is often the attitude of the analog designer. The fact is that many analog designers are convinced that human experience and intuition are needed for good analog design. This is why they distrust the automated synthesis tools. This observation is quite correct, but this is only a symptom of the real problem. This paper shows that this phenomenon is caused by very concrete technical (and thus very rational) issues. These issues lie in the mode of operation of the typical optimization processes employed for the synthesizing tasks. I will show that the dilemma that arises in analog design with these optimizers is the root cause of the low level of automation in analog design. The paper concludes with a review of proposals for automating analog design

In this paper we introduce nKV, which is a key/value store utilizing native computational storage and near-data processing. On the one hand, nKV can directly control the data and computation placement on the underlying storage hardware. On the other hand, nKV propagates the data formats and layouts to the storage device where, software and hardware parsers and accessors are implemented. Both allow NDP operations to execute in host-intervention-free manner, directly on physical addresses and thus better utilize the underlying hardware. Our performance evaluation is based on executing traditional KV operations (GET, SCAN) and on complex graph-processing algorithms (Betweenness Centrality) in-situ, with 1.4×-2.7× better performance on real hardware – the COSMOS+ platform.
nKV in action: accelerating KVstores on native computational storage with NearData processing

In this paper we demonstrate various NDP alternatives in nKV, which is a key/value store utilizing native computational storage and near-data processing. We showcase the execution of classical operations (GET, SCAN) and complex graph-processing algorithms (Betweenness Centrality) in-situ, with 1.4x-2.7x better performance due to NDP. nKV runs on real hardware - the COSMOS+ platform.
An index in a Multi-Version DBMS (MV-DBMS) has to reflect different tuple versions of a single data item. Existing approaches follow the paradigm of logically separating the tuple version data from the data item, e.g. an index is only allowed to return at most one version of a single data item (while it may return multiple data items that match a search criteria). Hence to determine the valid (and therefore visible) tuple version of a data item, the MV-DBMS first fetches all tuple versions that match the search criteria and subsequently filters visible versions using visibility checks. This involves I/O storage accesses to tuple versions that do not have to be fetched. In this vision paper we present the Multi Version Index (MV-IDX) approach that allows index-only visibility checks which significantly reduce the amount of I/O storage accesses as well as the index maintenance overhead. The MV-IDX achieves significantly lower response times and higher transactional throughput on OLTP workloads.
Characteristics of modern computing and storage technologies fundamentally differ from traditional hardware. There is a need to optimally leverage their performance, endurance and energy consumption characteristics. Therefore, existing architectures and algorithms in modern high performance database management systems have to be redesigned and advanced. Multi Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) approaches in data-base management systems maintain multiple physically independent tuple versions. Snapshot isolation approaches enable high parallelism and concurrency in workloads with almost serializable consistency level. Modern hardware technologies benefit from multi-version approaches. Indexing multi-version data on modern hardware is still an open research area. In this paper, we provide a survey of popular multi-version indexing approaches and an extended scope of high performance single-version approaches. An optimal multi-version index structure brings look-up efficiency of tuple versions, which are visible to transactions, and effort on index maintenance in balance for different workloads on modern hardware technologies.
Maintainability assurance techniques are used to control this quality attribute and limit the accumulation of potentially unknown technical debt. Since the industry state of practice and especially the handling of service- and microservice-based systems in this regard are not well covered in scientific literature, we created a survey to gather evidence for a) used processes, tools, and metrics in the industry, b) maintainability-related treatment of systems based on service orientation, and c) influences on developer satisfaction w.r.t. maintainability. 60 software professionals responded to our online questionnaire. The results indicate that using explicit and systematic techniques has benefits for maintainability. The more sophisticated the applied methods the more satisfied participants were with the maintainability of their software while no link to a hindrance in productivity could be established. Other important findings were the absence of architecture-level evolvability control mechanisms as well as a significant neglect of service-oriented particularities for quality assurance. The results suggest that industry has to improve its quality control in these regards to avoid problems with long living service-based software systems.
This is a report from a one-day fourth international workshop on "Information Systems in Distributed Environments" (ISDE), which was organized in conjunction with the OnTheMove Federated Conferences & Workshops (OTM 2014) October 29-30, 2014, Amantea, Calabria, Italy. The main focus of this event was to provide a venue for the discussion of challenges related to the development, operation, and maintenance of distributed information systems, and their creation in the context of global development projects. Further dissemination of research results will lead to an improvement of distributed information system development and deployment across the globe.
Database Management Systems (DBMS) need to handle large updatable datasets in on-line transaction processing (OLTP) workloads. Most modern DBMS provide snapshots of data in multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) transaction management scheme. Each transaction operates on a snapshot of the database, which is calculated from a set of tuple versions. High parallelism and resource-efficient append-only data placement on secondary storage is enabled. One major issue in indexing tuple versions on modern hardware technologies is the high write amplification for tree-indexes.
Partitioned B-Trees (PBT) [5] is based on the structure of the ubiquitous B+ Tree [8]. They achieve a near optimal write amplification and beneficial sequential writes on secondary storage. Yet they have not been implemented in a MVCC enabled DBMS to date.
In this paper we present the implementation of PBTs in PostgreSQL extended with SIAS. Compared to PostgreSQL’s B+–Trees PBTs have 50% better transaction throughput under TPC-C and a 30% improvement to standard PostgreSQL with Heap-Only Tuples.
Under update intensive workloads (TPC, LinkBench) small updates dominate the write behavior, e.g. 70% of all updates change less than 10 bytes across all TPC OLTP workloads. These are typically performed as in-place updates and result in random writes in page-granularity, causing major write-overhead on Flash storage, a write amplification of several hundred times and lower device longevity.
In this paper we propose an approach that transforms those small in-place updates into small update deltas that are appended to the original page. We utilize the commonly ignored fact that modern Flash memories (SLC, MLC, 3D NAND) can handle appends to already programmed physical pages by using various low-level techniques such as ISPP to avoid expensive erases and page migrations. Furthermore, we extend the traditional NSM page-layout with a delta-record area that can absorb those small updates. We propose a scheme to control the write behavior as well as the space allocation and sizing of database pages.
The proposed approach has been implemented under Shore- MT and evaluated on real Flash hardware (OpenSSD) and a Flash emulator. Compared to In-Page Logging it performs up to 62% less reads and writes and up to 74% less erases on a range of workloads. The experimental evaluation indicates: (i) significant reduction of erase operations resulting in twice the longevity of Flash devices under update-intensive workloads; (ii) 15%-60% lower read/write I/O latencies; (iii) up to 45% higher transactional throughput; (iv) 2x to 3x reduction in overall write
amplification.

A software process is the game plan to organize project teams and run projects. Yet, it still is a challenge to select the appropriate development approach for the respective context. A multitude of development approaches compete for the users’ favor, but there is no silver bullet serving all possible setups. Moreover, recent research as well as experience from practice shows companies utilizing different development approaches to assemble the bestfitting approach for the respective company: a more traditional process provides the basic framework to serve the organization, while project teams embody this framework with more agile (and/or lean) practices to keep their flexibility. The first HELENA workshop aims to bring together the community to discuss recent findings and to steer future work.
Blockchains yield to new workloads in database management systems and K/V-stores. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is a technique for managing transactions in ’trustless’ distributed systems. Yet, clients of nodes in blockchain networks are backed by ’trustworthy’ K/V-Stores, like LevelDB or RocksDB in Ethereum, which are based on Log-Structured Merge Trees (LSM Trees). However, LSM-Trees do not fully match the properties of blockchains and enterprise workloads.
In this paper, we claim that Partitioned B-Trees (PBT) fit the properties of this DLT: uniformly distributed hash keys, immutability, consensus, invalid blocks, unspent and off-chain transactions, reorganization and data state / version ordering in a distributed log-structure. PBT can locate records of newly inserted key-value pairs, as well as data of unspent transactions, in separate partitions in main memory. Once several blocks acquire consensus, PBTs evict a whole partition, which becomes immutable, to secondary storage. This behavior minimizes write amplification and enables a beneficial sequential write pattern on modern hardware. Furthermore, DLT implicate some type of log-based versioning. PBTs can serve as MV-store for data storage of logical blocks and indexing in multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) transaction processing.
Selecting a suitable development method for a specific project context is one of the most challenging activities in process design. Every project is unique and, thus, many context factors have to be considered. Recent research took some initial steps towards statistically constructing hybrid development methods, yet, paid little attention to the peculiarities of context factors influencing method and practice selection. In this paper, we utilize exploratory factor analysis and logistic regression analysis to learn such context factors and to identify methods that are correlated with these factors. Our analysis is based on 829 data points from the HELENA dataset. We provide five base clusters of methods consisting of up to 10 methods that lay the foundation for devising hybrid development methods. The analysis of the five clusters using trained models reveals only a few context factors, e.g., project/product size and target application domain, that seem to significantly influence the selection of methods. An extended descriptive analysis of these practices in the context of the identified method clusters also suggests a consolidation of the relevant practice sets used in specific project contexts.
There is still a great reliance on human expert knowledge during the analog integrated circuit sizing design phase due to its complexity and scale, with the result that there is a very low level of automation associated with it. Current research shows that reinforcement learning is a promising approach for addressing this issue. Similarly, it has been shown that the convergence of conventional optimization approaches can be improved by transforming the design space from the geometrical domain into the electrical domain. Here, this design space transformation is employed as an alternative action space for deep reinforcement learning agents. The presented approach is based entirely on reinforcement learning, whereby agents are trained in the craft of analog circuit sizing without explicit expert guidance. After training and evaluating agents on circuits of varying complexity, their behavior when confronted with a different technology, is examined, showing the applicability, feasibility as well as transferability of this approach.
Deep learning-based EEG detection of mental alertness states from drivers under ethical aspects

One of the most critical factors for a successful road trip is a high degree of alertness while driving. Even a split second of inattention or sleepiness in a crucial moment, will make the difference between life and death. Several prestigious car manufacturers are currently pursuing the aim of automated drowsiness identification to resolve this problem. The path between neuro-scientific research in connection with artificial intelligence and the preservation of the dignity of human individual’s and its inviolability, is very narrow. The key contribution of this work is a system of data analysis for EEGs during a driving session, which draws on previous studies analyzing heart rate (ECG), brain waves (EEG), and eye function (EOG). The gathered data is hereby treated as sensitive as possible, taking ethical regulations into consideration. Obtaining evaluable signs of evolving exhaustion includes techniques that obtain sleeping stage frequencies, problematic are hereby the correlated interference’s in the signal. This research focuses on a processing chain for EEG band splitting that involves band-pass filtering, principal component analysis (PCA), independent component analysis (ICA) with automatic artefact severance, and fast fourier transformation (FFT). The classification is based on a step-by-step adaptive deep learning analysis that detects theta rhythms as a drowsiness predictor in the pre-processed data. It was possible to obtain an offline detection rate of 89% and an online detection rate of 73%. The method is linked to the simulated driving scenario for which it was developed. This leaves space for more optimization on laboratory methods and data collection during wakefulness-dependent operations.
Through increasing market dynamics, rapidly evolving technologies and shifting user expectations coupled with the adoption of lean and agile practices, companies are struggling with their ability to provide reliable product roadmaps by applying traditional approaches. Currently, most companies are seeking opportunities to improve their product roadmapping practices. As a first challenge they have to assess their current product roadmapping capabilities in order to better understand how to improve their practices and how to switch to a new approach. The aim of this article is to provide an initial maturity model for product roadmapping practices that is especially suited for assessing the roadmapping capabilities of companies operating in dynamic and uncertain market environments. Based on interviews with 15 experts from 13 various companies the current state of practice regarding product roadmapping was identified. Afterwards, the model development was conducted in the context of expert workshops with the Robert Bosch GmbH and researchers. The study results in the so-called DEEP 1.0 product roadmap maturity model which allows companies to conduct a self assessment of their product roadmapping practice.
Simple MOSFET models intended for hand analysis are inaccurate in deep sub-micrometer process technologies and in the moderate inversion region of device operation. Accurate models, such as the Berkeley BSIM6 model, are too complex for use in hand analysis and are intended for circuit simulators. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are efficient at capturing both linear and non-linear multivariate relationships. In this work, a straightforward modeling technique is presented using ANNs to replace the BSIM model equations. Existing open-source libraries are used to quickly build models with error rates generally below 3%. When combined with a novel approach, such as the gm/Id systematic design method, the presented models are sufficiently accurate for use in the initial sizing of analog circuit components without simulation.
Physical analog IC design has not been automated to the same degree as digital IC design. This shortfall is primarily rooted in the analog IC design problem itself, which is considerably more complex even for small problem sizes. Significant progress has been made in analog automation in several R&D target areas in recent years. Constraint engineering and generator-based module approaches are among the innovations that have emerged. Our paper will first present a brief review of the state of the art of analog layout automation. We will then introduce active and open research areas and present two visions – a “continuous layout design flow” and a “bottom-up meets top-down design flow” – which could significantly push analog design automation towards its goal of analog synthesis.
In a time of digital transformation, the ability to quickly and efficiently adapt software systems to changed business requirements becomes more important than ever. Measuring the maintainability of software is therefore crucial for the long-term management of such products. With service-based systems (SBSs) being a very important form of enterprise software, we present a holistic overview of such metrics specifically designed for this type of system, since traditional metrics – e.g. object oriented ones – are not fully applicable in this case. The selected metric candidates from the literature review were mapped to 4 dominant design properties: size, complexity, coupling, and cohesion. Microservice-based systems (μSBSs) emerge as an agile and fine grained variant of SBSs. While the majority of identified metrics are also applicable to this specialization (with some limitations), the large number of services in combination with technological heterogeneity and decentralization of control significantly impacts automatic metric collection in such a system. Our research therefore suggests that specialized tool support is required to guarantee the practical applicability of the presented metrics to μSBSs.
Painting galleries typically provide a wealth of data composed of several data types. Those multivariate data are too complex for laymen like museum visitors to first, get an overview about all paintings and to look for specific categories. Finally, the goal is to guide the visitor to a specific painting that he wishes to have a more closer look on. In this paper we describe an interactive visualization tool that first provides such an overview and lets people experiment with the more than 41,000 paintings collected in the web gallery of art. To generate such an interactive tool, our technique is composed of different steps like data handling, algorithmic transformations, visualizations, interactions, and the human user working with the tool with the goal to detect insights in the provided data. We illustrate the usefulness of the visualization tool by applying it to such characteristic data and show how one can get from an overview about all paintings to specific paintings.
In this paper we describe an interactive web-based tool for visual analysis of Formula 1 data. A calendar-like representation provides an overview of all races on a yearly basis, either in absolute or normalized time. After selecting a dedicated race more details about this race can be explored. Furthermore it is possible to compare up to three different races. Beside visualizing details on dedicated races it is also possible to analyse driver and team performance over time. A user study was applied to get feedback about the usage of the application and decide between different visualization options.
Many modern DBMS architectures require transferring data from storage to process it afterwards. Given the continuously increasing amounts of data, data transfers quickly become a scalability limiting factor. Near-Data Processing and smart/computational storage emerge as promising trends allowing for decoupled in-situ operation execution, data transfer reduction and better bandwidth utilization. However, not every operation is suitable for an in-situ execution and a careful placement and optimization is needed.
In this paper we present an NDP-aware cost model. It has been implemented in MySQL and evaluated with nKV. We make several observations underscoring the need for optimization.
Today’s cars are characterized by many functional variants. There are many reasons for the underlying variability, from the adaptation to diverse markets to different technical aspects, which are based on a cross platform reuse of software functions. Inevitably, this variability is reflected in the model-based automotive software development. A modeling language, which is widely used for modeling embedded software in the automotive industry, is MATLAB/Simulink. There are concepts facing the high demand for a systematic handling of variability in Simulinkmodels. However, not every concept is suitable for every automotive application. In order to present a classification of concepts for modeling variability in Simulink, this paper first has to determine the relevant use cases for variant handling in modelbased automotive software development. Existing concepts for modeling variability in Simulink will then be presented before being classified in relation to the previously determined use cases.
