Early reduction of risks in a startup or an innovation project is highly important. Appropriate means for risk reduction, such as testing business models with different kinds of experiments exist. However, deciding what to test and how to select the right test, is challenging for many startups and innovation projects. This article presents the so-called Business Experiments Navigator (BEN), a toolkit to assist startup and innovation processes. It compliments other tools such as the Business Model Canvas or the Lean Startup process. The main contribution of BEN is to bridge the gap between the riskiest assumptions of a business model and the multitude of available testing techniques by providing assumption templates. The Business Experiments Navigator has been validated in several workshops. Results show that it creates awareness among the workshop participants that a business model is based on assumptions which impose risks and need to be validated. Further, users of BEN were able to identify relevant assumptions and map different kinds of assumptions to appropriate testing techniques. The process applied in the workshops, as well as the assumption templates, helped the participants understand the main concepts and transfer their learnings, to their own business ideas.
Software startups often make assumptions about the problems and customers they are addressing as well as the market and the solutions they are developing. Testing the right assumptions early is a means to mitigate risks. Approaches such as Lean Startup foster this kind of testing by applying experimentation as part of a constant build-measure-learn feedback loop. The existing research on how software startups approach experimentation is very limited. In this study, we focus on understanding how software startups approach experimentation and identify challenges and advantages with respect to conducting experiments. To achieve this, we conducted a qualitative interview study. The initial results show that startups often spent a disproportionate amount of time focusing on creating solutions without testing critical assumptions. Main reasons are the lack of awareness, that these assumptions can be tested early and a lack of knowledge and support on how to identify, prioritize and test these assumptions. However, startups understand the need for testing risky assumptions and are open to conducting experiments.
Creating new business models, products or services is challenging in fast changing unpredictable environments. Often, product teams need to make many assumptions (e.g., assumptions about future demands) that might not be true. These assumptions impose risks to the success and these risks need to be mitigated early. One of the principles of the Lean Startup approach is to identify and prioritize the riskiest assumptions in order to validate them as early as possible. This helps to avoid wasting effort and time. In the literature there are several different methods for identifying and prioritizing the riskiest assumptions reported. However, only little research exists about the practical application of these methods in practice and how to teach them. In this paper, we present and empirically analyze a workshop format that we have developed for teaching the prioritization of Lean Startup assumptions. We aim at raising the awareness for assumption thinking among the participants and teach them through group work how to prioritize assumptions. The results of the analysis of a multitude of conducted workshops show that the applied method did lead to reasonable results and accompanying learning effects. In addition, the participants got aware of assumption thinking and liked learning in a practical way.
As production workspaces become more mobile and dynamic it becomes increasingly important to reliably monitor the overall state of the environment. Therein manipulators or other robotic systems likely have to be able to act autonomously together with humans and other systems within a joint workspace. Such interactions require that all components in non-stationary environments are able to perceive the state relative to each other. As vision-sensors provide a rich source of information to accomplish this, we present RoPose, a convolutional neural network (CNN) based approach, to estimate the two dimensional joint configuration of a simulated industrial manipulator from a camera image. This pose information can further be used by a novel targetless calibration setup to estimate the pose of the camera relative to the manipulator’s space. We present a pipeline to automatically generate synthetic training data and conclude with a discussion of the potential usage of the same pipeline to acquire real image datasets of physically existent robots.
RoPose-Real: real world dataset acquisition for data-driven industrial robot arm pose estimation

It is necessary to employ smart sensory systems in dynamic and mobile workspaces where industrial robots are mounted on mobile platforms. Such systems should be aware of flexible and non-stationary workspaces and able to react autonomously to changing situations. Building upon our previously presented RoPose-system, which employs a convolutional neural network architecture that has been trained on pure synthetic data to estimate the kinematic chain of an industrial robot arm system, we now present RoPose-Real. RoPose-Real extends the prior system with a comfortable and targetless extrinsic calibration tool, to allow for the production of automatically annotated datasets for real robot systems. Furthermore, we use the novel datasets to train the estimation network with real world data. The extracted pose information is used to automatically estimate the observing sensor pose relative to the robot system. Finally we evaluate the performance of the presented subsystems in a real world robotic scenario.
Based on well-established robotic concepts of autonomous localization and navigation we present a system prototype to assist camera-based indoor navigation for human utilization implemented in the Robot Operating System (ROS). Our prototype takes advantage of state-of-the-art computer vision and robotic methods. Our system is designed for assistive indoor guidance. We employ a vibro tactile belt to serve as a guiding device to render derived motion suggestions to the user via vibration patterns. We evaluated the effectiveness of a variety of vibro-tactile feedback patterns for guidance of blindfolded users. Our prototype demonstrates that a vision-based system can support human navigation, and may also assist the visually impaired in a human-centered way.
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur extrinsischen Kalibrierung wenigstens eines bildgebenden Sensors, wonach eine Pose des wenigstens einen bildgebenden Sensors relativ zu dem Ursprung (U) eines dreidimensionalen Koordinatensystems einer Handhabungseinrichtung mittels einer Recheneinrichtung bestimmt wird, wobei bekannte dreidimensionale Koordinaten betreffend die Position wenigstens eines Gelenks der Handhabungseinrichtung durch die Recheneinrichtung berücksichtigt werden, und wobei zweidimensionale Koordinaten betreffend die Position des wenigstens einen Gelenks anhand von Rohdaten des wenigstens einen bildgebenden Sensors ermittelt werden, und wobei die Recheneinrichtung die Pose des wenigstens einen bildgebenden Sensors anhand der Korrespondenz zwischen den zweidimensionalen Koordinaten und den dreidimensionalen Koordinaten bestimmt.
In modern collaborative production environments where industrial robots and humans are supposed to work hand in hand, it is mandatory to observe the robot’s workspace at all times. Such observation is even more crucial when the robot’s main position is also dynamic e.g. because the system is mounted on a movable platform. As current solutions like physically secured areas in which a robot can perform actions potentially dangerous for humans, become unfeasible in such scenarios, novel, more dynamic, and situation aware safety solutions need to be developed and deployed.
This thesis mainly contributes to the bigger picture of such a collaborative scenario by presenting a data-driven convolutional neural network-based approach to estimate the two-dimensional kinematic-chain configuration of industrial robot-arms within raw camera images. This thesis also provides the information needed to generate and organize the mandatory data basis and presents frameworks that were used to realize all involved subsystems. The robot-arm’s extracted kinematic-chain can also be used to estimate the extrinsic camera parameters relative to the robot’s three-dimensional origin. Further a tracking system, based on a two-dimensional kinematic chain descriptor is presented to allow for an accumulation of a proper movement history which enables the prediction of future target positions within the given image plane. The combination of the extracted robot’s pose with a simultaneous human pose estimation system delivers a consistent data flow that can be used in higher-level applications.
This thesis also provides a detailed evaluation of all involved subsystems and provides a broad overview of their particular performance, based on novel generated, semi automatically annotated, real datasets.
Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die Zusammenhänge zwischen Industrie 4.0 und Recht. Ausgangspunkt sind die vertragsrechtlichen Grundlagen mit den Fragen, ob und wie zwischen Maschinen überhaupt Verträge zustande kommen können, wie Industrie 4.0-Verträge vertragstypologisch einzuordnen sind und welche Grenzen bei der Verwendung Allgemeiner Geschäftsbedingungen bestehen können. Anschließend werden die Themen dargestellt, die derzeit die Diskussion um das Haftungsrecht der Industrie 4.0 beherrschen. Im Rahmen des Datenrechts wird geklärt, wem Daten zustehen und wie der Datenschutz geregelt ist. Zudem wird aufgezeigt, welche rechtlichen Vorgaben zur Gewährleistung von IT-Sicherheit im Unternehmen bestehen. Schließlich werden auch arbeitsrechtliche Herausforderungen von Industrie 4.0 angesprochen, wie die zunehmende "Entbetrieblichung", das Aufkommen neuer Beschäftigungsformen, die Forderung nach mehr Flexibilisierung der Arbeitswelt sowie Fragen des Mitbestimmungsrechts.
This article explores the question of how sustainability and labour law are interrelated. The modern world of work is characterised by the growing social and environmental responsibility of companies. Especially in the post-COVID era, sustainability also plays an increasingly important role in the corporate context, which is also noticeable in the so-called ‘war for talent’. Achieving personal career goals is no longer enough for employees today. Corporate values and in particular the so-called ESG criteria (Environment, Social, Governance) are thus also becoming increasingly important in the employment relationship and in corporate reporting requirements. In terms of social sustainability, labour law instruments can, for example, promote the creation of a discrimination-free working environment, the introduction of flexible working time models or the protection of whistleblowers. From an ecological perspective, labour regulations are also suitable for implementing ‘green mobility’ and other measures to reduce companies’ ecological footprints. Working from home, which experienced a huge boom during the COVID-19 pandemic, is also sustainable, especially from an ecological point of view. Appropriate consideration of these sustainable work tools in future corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies not only creates a competitive advantage but can also be beneficial in recruitment.
We present an approach for segmenting individual cells and lamellipodia in epithelial cell clusters using fully convolutional neural networks. The method will set the basis for measuring cell cluster dynamics and expansion to improve the investigation of collective cell migration phenomena. The fully learning-based front-end avoids classical feature engineering, yet the network architecture needs to be designed carefully. Our network predicts how likely each pixel belongs to one of the classes and, thus, is able to segment the image. Besides characterizing segmentation performance, we discuss how the network will be further employed.
Digital light microscopy techniques are among the most widely used methods in cell biology and medical research. Despite that, the automated classification of objects such as cells or specific parts of tissues in images is difficult. We present an approach to classify confluent cell layers in microscopy images by learned deep correlation features using deep neural networks. These deep correlation features are generated through the use of gram-based correlation features and are input to a neural network for learning the correlation between them. In this work we wanted to prove if a representation of cell data based on this is suitable for its classification as has been done for artworks with respect to their artistic period. The method generates images that contain recognizable characteristics of a specific cell type, for example, the average size and the ordered pattern.
This article examines centralised and decentralised approaches towards managing internationalisation by means of a case study. Reutlingen University (Hochschule Reutlingen), a university of applied sciences in Southern Germany, has three decades of experience in managing internationalisation. Its strongly integrated and hybrid approach combines centralised and decentralised strategies with the aim of achieving responsiveness, innovation, transparency, quality, and goal alignment. Centralisation and decentralisation are manifested on two levels: university versus schools, and school versus individual programmes. Since internationalisation is embedded in virtually all areas of the university’s operations, examples will be provided ranging from administration and marketing to research, international programme management and curricula.
In diesem Kapitel werden die Grundlagen eines nachhaltigen Human Resource Management (HRM) erläutert und auf den Sport- und Kultursektor übertragen. Nach einer kurzen Einführung in die Thematik und deren Relevanz werden zunächst verschiedene Ansätze des nachhaltigen HRM beschrieben. Anschließend wird sowohl auf die personalrelevanten Besonderheiten in Sport und Kultur als auch auf die Herausforderungen in beiden Sektoren eingegangen. Es wird zum einen beschrieben, wie Nachhaltigkeit in der HR-Strategie verankert werden kann, um geeignete Humanressourcen zu gewinnen. Hierbei werden insbesondere die Personalplanung, die Personalbeschaffung, der Rekrutierungs- und Auswahlprozess sowie das anschließende Onboarding beleuchtet. Zum anderen werden Anregungen für nachhaltige Mitarbeiterbindungsmaßnahmen in den Bereichen Training, Entwicklung und Leistungsmanagement gegeben. Zum Abschluss bietet dieses Kapitel einen Ausblick in die Zukunft.
The use of gamification in workplace learning to encourage employee motivation and engagement

When we think about playing a game, be it a card game, board game, sport, or video game, we generally associate the act of playing with a positive experience like having fun, enjoying the interaction with others, or feeling a greater motivation to reach a certain goal. By contrast, workplace learning is often perceived as being dull. Employees are likely at some point in their career to find themselves stuck in a rigidly defined seminar for a long period of time or in front of their computer navigating through a mandatory e-learning course on a dry topic such as standards of business conduct of safety policies.
In recent years, organizations have tried to leverage the motivating quality of games for more serious learning contexts. Gamification entails transferring those elements and principles from games to nongaming context that improve user experience and engagement. In this chapter, we will specifically focus on the context of workplace learning.

Interdisciplinary, complex problem-solving and the necessity to communicate effectively in global Teams characterise today’s rapidly changing Business environment. Employers consistently stress the need for business engineering graduates to demonstrate technical expertise, methodological competences and diverse soft skills. The "silo effect" in higher education has partially created a gap between what industry wants and what academia provides. Here we examine how interdisciplinary team teaching and shared ICT might be more effective in bringing higher education teaching in sync with industry and its demands.
This article explores current debate on the use of soft power in international higher education, highlighting existing tensions between competing political and academic discourses. It draws on examples from practice and relevant insights in soft power scholarship to capture varying paradoxes and dilemmas that emerge as nations try to leverage the power of international tertiary education to enhance their brand and attract foreign audiences in the name of public diplomacy. Whilst exposing cases of hubris and hidden agendas, this study also addresses issues of inequality and responds to a growing call for knowledge diplomacy aimed at tackling common global problems.

A concept for a slope shaping gate driver IC is proposed, used to establish control over the slew rates of current and voltage during the turn-on and turn off switching transients.
It combines the high speed and linearity of a fully-integrated closed-loop analog gate driver, which is able to perform real-time regulation, with the advantages of digital control, like flexibility and parameter independency, operating in a predictive cycle-bycycle regulation. In this work, the analog gate drive integrated circuit is partitioned into functional blocks and modeled in the small-signal domain, which also includes the non-linearity of parameters. An analytical stability analysis has been performed in order to ensure full functionality of the system controlling a modern generation IGBT and a superjunction MOSFET. Major parameters of influence, such as gate resistor and summing node capacitance, are investigated to achieve stable control. The large-signal behavior, investigated by simulations of a transistor level design, verifies the correct operation of the circuit. Hence, the gate driver can be designed for robust operation.
In a digitally controlled slope shaping system, reliable detection of both voltage and current slope is required to enable a closed-loop control for various power switches independent of system parameters. In most state-of-the-art works, this is realized by monitoring the absolute voltage and current values. Better accuracy at lower DC power loss is achieved by sensing techniques for a reliable passive detection, which is achieved through avoiding DC paths from the high voltage network into the sensing network. Using a high-speed analog-to-digital converter, the whole waveform of the transient derivative can be stored digitally and prepared for a predictive cycle-by-cycle regulation, without requiring high-precision digital differentiation algorithms. To gain an accurate representation of the voltage and current derivative waveforms, system parasitics are investigated and classified in three sections: (1) component parasitics, which are identified by s-parameter measurements and extraction of equivalent circuit models, (2) PCB design issues related to the sensing circuit, and (3) interconnections between adjacent boards.
The contribution of this paper is an optimized sensing network on the basis of the experimental study supporting fast transition slopes up to 100 V/ns and 1 A/ns and beyond, making the sensing technique attractive for slope shaping of fast switching devices like modern generation IGBTs, CoolMOSTM and SiC mosfets. Measurements of the optimized dv/dt and di/dt setups are demonstrated for a hard switched IGBT power stage.
Eines der gängigsten bildgebenden Verfahren in der Medizin ist die Sonografie. Jedoch ist die Reproduzierbarkeit der Ultraschalldiagnostik bis heute noch immer ein Problem, wodurch Fehldiagnosen gestellt werden. Durch das in diesem Papier vorgestellte prototypische System zur Unterstützung für Medizinstudenten in Ultraschallseminaren sollen Anforderungen zur Reproduzierbarkeit einer Ultraschalluntersuchung definiert werden. Durch Experteninterviews wurden Einblicke in die klinischen Abläufe und den Krankenhaus-Alltag gewonnen, welche Inhalte relevant sind, um die Reproduzierbarkeit von Ultraschalluntersuchungen zu ermöglichen.
A 3D face modelling approach for pose-invariant face recognition in a human-robot environment

Face analysis techniques have become a crucial component of human-machine interaction in the fields of assistive and humanoid robotics. However, the variations in head-pose that arise naturally in these environments are still a great challenge. In this paper, we present a real-time capable 3D face modelling framework for 2D in-the-wild images that is applicable for robotics. The fitting of the 3D Morphable Model is based exclusively on automatically detected landmarks. After fitting, the face can be corrected in pose and transformed back to a frontal 2D representation that is more suitable for face recognition. We conduct face recognition experiments with non-frontal images from the MUCT database and uncontrolled, in the wild images from the PaSC database, the most challenging face recognition database to date, showing an improved performance. Finally, we present our SCITOS G5 robot system, which incorporates our framework as a means of image pre-processing for face analysis.
It is expected that ongoing digitalisation will drive the merger between the manufacturing world and the internet world, possibly leading to a next industrial revolution, currently called “Industry 4.0”. The driving forces behind this development are new business opportunities and competition advantages arising from mass production customisation as well as rapid individual product development and manufacturing. Key factors of the development towards Industry 4.0 are discussed. Threats and opportunities arising from these developments for future production are discussed. Actual examples from real-time customized manufacturing of consumer products are given. As mechatronic systems and industrial robots are widely used in manufacturing and in particular in assembly, it is discussed how they can be connected to and used in digitalised industrial systems. Different examples of remote controlled systems are presented, like remote controlled KUKA robot for handling and quality control, PLC-controlled equipment, drive systems, FESTO handling system and others. The architecture of an assembly cell is presented, where industrial robots are set-up for batch-one production or can directly receive control / production information on-line and in real-time over the factory network. Methods for remote maintenance and monitoring of systems over the internet and production operator support over the internet are presented as well.
Purpose: Mobile robots are used in many areas of industry and commerce. This paper describes research on and development of a mobile platform, which is based on the concept of a ball-on-ball balancer, with two electrical drives at an angle of 90° providing a velocity vector in any direction in the horizontal plane. The purpose is to implement an originally novel principle for an omnidirectional mobile platform of very high agility, which is able at any given situation to move immediately in any direction without additional steering movements or steering mechanism.
Methodology: In advance of the design and implementation of the control strategy for the mobile device, the method of theoretical modelling of the vehicle’s properties and behaviour was applied. The developed theoretical and numerical dynamic models take into account all the control parameters which allow for the determination of the critical value of angular acceleration of the driving wheel. This is needed to prevent any slippage of the ball as this would result in the loss of accuracy of positioning. The equations of motion were implemented in the platform controller and tested. The mobile platform consists of a ball of 0.2 m radius driven in the X-Y plane by two wheels that are attached to servo motors. The mobile platform is controlled by a CAN PLC controller interfacing with the motor drives, accelerometers and a laser sensor for feedback. Wireless communication provides the interface with the station controller via Wi-Fi and XBee Series 2 modules.
Findings: The experimentally obtained results show that the mobile platform can be reliably controlled using the ball-onball balancer principle with the developed control algorithm. Additional application of a sensor for guiding the mobile platform along obstacles or guiding lines improves the accuracy of the movement.
Originality: The originality of the control strategy for a mobile platform with an omnidirectional drive, proposed at the paper, is the avoiding slippage by limiting the platform acceleration to below the critical value by means of monitoring and limiting the lead values of the feedback control loop of the driving wheels.
Practical value: Development of control strategy for the mobile robot, which is based on the concept of a ball-on-ball balancer with two electrical drives at an angle of 90° providing a velocity vector in any direction in the horizontal plane.
Noch sind Elektrofahrzeuge die Ausnahme auf deutschen Straßen – im Gegensatz beispielsweise zu Innenstadträumen in China. Lediglich Fahrräder mit elektrischer Antriebsunterstützung haben inzwischen auch in Deutschland eine größere Verbreitung gefunden. Nach wie vor ist jedoch die breite Erfahrung im alltäglichen Einsatz von elektrisch betriebenen Fahrzeugen relativ gering. An der Hochschule Reutlingen steht eine Flotte von 10 Elektrozweirädern, bestehend aus 5 Elektrofahrrädern (Pedelecs) und 5 Elektrorollern (E-Scooter) zur Verfügung. Hiermit werden mehrere Ziele verfolgt: Zum einen soll jedes Mitglied der Hochschule die Möglichkeit haben, Elektrofahrzeuge auszuprobieren und erste Erfahrungen zu sammeln. Andererseits stellen die Fahrzeuge eine Plattform für Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten dar. So ist ein Internet-basiertes Reservierungs- und Flottenmanagementsystem entstanden, das auch statistische Auswertungen zulässt. Eine weitere Entwicklung befasst sich mit genauen Reichweitenvorhersagesystemen, mit dem Ziel, die bislang recht ungenaue Batterie-Ladestandsanzeige zu verbessern oder zu ersetzen.
The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated significant changes in foreign language education, forcing teachers to reconstruct their identities and redefine their roles as language educators. To better understand these adaptations and perspectives, it is crucial to study how the pandemic has influenced teaching practices. This mixed-methods study focused on the less-explored aspects of foreign language teaching during the pandemic, specifically examining how language teachers adapted and perceived their practices, including rapport building and learner autonomy, during emergency remote teaching (ERT) in higher education institutions. It also explored teachers’ intentions for their teaching in the post-pandemic era. An online survey was conducted, involving 118 language educators primarily from Germany, with a smaller representation from New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The analysis of participants’ responses revealed issues and opportunities regarding lesson formats, tool usage, rapport, and learner autonomy. Our findings offer insights into the desired changes participants envisioned for the post-pandemic era. The results highlight the opportunities ERT had created in terms of teacher development, and we offer suggestions to enhance professional development programmes based on these findings.
Rapidly changing market conditions and global competition are leading to an increasing complexity of logistics systems and require innovative approaches with respect to the organisation and control of these systems. In scientific research, concepts of autonomously controlled logistics systems show a promising approach to meet the increasing requirements for flexible and efficient order processing. In this context, this work aims to introduce a system that is able to adjust order processing dynamically, and optimise intralogistics transportation regarding various generic intralogistics target criteria. The logistics system under consideration consists of various means of transport for autonomous decision-making and fulfilment of transport orders with defined source-sink relationships. The context of this work is set by introducing the Learning Factory Werk 150 with its existing hardware and software infrastructure and its defined target figures to measure the performance of the system. Specifically, the important target figures cost and performance are considered for the transportation system. The core idea of the system’s logic is to solve the problem of order allocation to specific means of transport by linking a Genetic Algorithm with a Multi-Agent System. The implementation of the developed system is described in an application scenario at the learning factory.
Plasma polymerization is used for the modification and control of surface properties of a highly transparent, thermoplastic elastomeric silicone copolymer, GENIOMER® 80 (G80). PEG-like diglyme plasma polymer films were deposited with ether retentions varying between 20% and 70% as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis which did not affect the transparency of the substrate. Films with ether retentions of greater than 70% inhibit protein binding (bovine serum albumin and fibrinogen) and cell proliferation. A short oxygen plasma pretreatment enhances the adhesion and stability of the film as shown by protein binding and cell adhesion experiments. The transparency of the material and the stability of the coating makes this material a versatile bulk material for technical (e.g., lab-on-a-chip) and biomedical (e.g., intraocular lens) applications. The G80/plasma polymer composite is stable against vigorous washing and storage over 5 months and, therefore, offers an attractive alternative to poly(dimethylsiloxane).
The members of the European TRIZ Campus (ETC) have been learning from and working together with many honorable members of MATRIZ Official for many years and feel very connected to the official International TRIZ Association.
To further spread the TRIZ methodology and TRIZ teaching in the European area in the past 12 months the ETC has put a lot of thought in how making TRIZ accessible to a broader audi-ence and getting more professionals in touch with the methodology was one of the focal points.
To this end, we have developed new formats such as the "Trainer Day" to support trainers on their way into practice. We have drawn up detailed quality guidelines for the teaching of the TRIZ methodology, which are intended to provide orientation for the design of training classes and docu-mentation. We strive for exchange with representatives of "neighbouring" methods such as Six sigma, Lean, DFMA and Design Thinking to indicate synergies and added value among methods and approaches of different kinds. We are testing formats for community building, in order to connect users of all places more strongly with the TRIZ methodology through communication and information of-fers. If TRIZ users feel alone in their organizations, the exchange outside their organi-zation helps them to keep up with the TRIZ methodology. Moreover, the ETC strives to increase the ability to communicate the benefits of TRIZ-usage inside organizations. We discuss, how to reach teachers and students of all age, to make them the unique way of inventive thinking accessible.
In our paper we want to give other MATRIZ Official members insights and share our experi-ences and best practices with our fellow MO members.
Fatigue and drowsiness are responsible for a significant percentage of road traffic accidents. There are several approaches to monitor the driver's drowsiness, ranging from the driver's steering behavior to the analysis of the driver, e.g. eye tracking, blinking, yawning, or electrocardiogram (ECG). This paper describes the development of a low-cost ECG sensor to derive heart rate variability (HRV) data for drowsiness detection. The work includes hardware and software design. The hardware was implemented on a printed circuit board (PCB) designed so that the board can be used as an extension shield for an Arduino. The PCB contains a double, inverted ECG channel including low-pass filtering and provides two analog outputs to the Arduino, which combines them and performs the analog-to-digital conversion. The digital ECG signal is transferred to an NVidia embedded PC where the processing takes place, including QRS-complex, heart rate, and HRV detection as well as visualization features. The resulting compact sensor provides good results in the extraction of the main ECG parameters. The sensor is being used in a larger frame, where facial-recognition-based drowsiness detection is combined with ECG-based detection to improve the recognition rate under unfavorable light or occlusion conditions.
Die Automobilindustrie sieht sich seit Jahren rasant verändernden Markt-, Umwelt- und Wettbewerbsbedingungen ausgesetzt. Der Entwicklungsprozess in der Automobilindustrie wird dadurch zunehmend komplexer. Die Einbeziehung neuer Partner aus anderen Industriebereichen und der Wissenschaft stellt hierbei ein großes Innovationspotential dar, insbesondere Systeminnovationen können hierdurch gefördert werden. Die Herausforderungen solch interdisziplinärer, interorganisationaler Entwicklungsprojekte können nur im geeigneten Umfeld gemeistert werden. In der Literatur als auch in der Industrie lassen sich zahlreiche Kooperationsmodelle identifizieren. Die Eignung dieser Modelle für die interdisziplinäre, interorganisationale Entwicklung in der Automobilindustrie wird anhand geeigneter Kriterien bewertet. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse der Analyse empirisch überprüft und für den praktischen Fall der ARENA2036 angewendet.
The automotive industry faces three major challenges – shortage of fossil fuels, politics of global warming and rising competition from new markets. In order to remain competitive companies have to develop more efficient and alternative fuel vehicles that meet the individual requirements of the customers. Functional Integration combined with new Technologies and materials are the key to stable success in this industry. The sustaining upward trend to system innovations within the last ten years confirms this. The development of complex products like automobiles claim skills of various disciplines e.g. engineering, chemistry. Furthermore, these skills are spread all over the supply chain. Hence the only way to stay successful in the automotive industry is cooperation and collaborative innovation. Interdisciplinary and interorganizational development has high demands on cooperation models especially in the automotive industry. In this case study cooperation models are analyzed and evaluated according to their applicability to interdisciplinary, interorganizational development projects in the automotive industry. Following, the research campus ARENA2036 is analyzed. ARENA2036 is an interdisciplinary, interorganizational development project housing automobile manufacturers, suppliers, research establishments and university institutes. Finally, based on interviews with the partners and the precede analyses of cooperation models, suggestions for implementation are given to ARENA2036.
Die Automobilindustrie steht insbesondere im Forschungs- und Entwicklungsbereich vor großen Herausforderungen. Es zeichnet sich eine deutliche Entwicklung hin zu Systeminnovationen ab, um den gestiegenen Anforderungen des Marktes gerecht zu werden. Voraussetzung hierfür ist die Kooperation von Unternehmen innerhalb der Wertschöpfungskette. In dieser Arbeit werden zunächst auf theoretischer Basis geeignete Kooperationsmodelle ausgewählt, die in einem zweiten Schritt anhand einer Nutzwertanalyse bewertet werden. Die Basis für die Bewertung bilden theoretische Überlegungen, die anhand von Experteninterviews validiert werden. Die Analyse zeigt, dass der Forschungscampus als auch das Branchencluster die beste Eignung aufweist. Abschließend werden die Erkenntnisse an einem Praxisobjekt angewandt.
The German automotive industry succeeds by technological leadership. Several circumstances like politics of global warming or increased global competition force the whole industry to break new ground for new kinds of collaborative research and development. ARENA2036 represents such a new cooperation form that hosts diverse scientific and industrial partners in one campus in order to research innovative production and light-weight construction topics. The diversity of the partners in ARENA2036 challenges the new product development process (NPDP). In this case study the individual processes of the partners are analysed and a NPDP system is developed. The analysis bases on interviews covering all partners. The NPDP system supports the needs of the interdisciplinary and cross-company partners. It is characterized by a layered structure in order to preserve flexibility for research topics combined with institutionalized parts to manage interfaces. The final NPDP system is evaluated by the partners.
Die Entwicklung neuer Produkte findet nicht nur abteilungs-, sondern zunehmend organisationsübergreifend statt. Kooperationen in der Produktentstehung gewinnen folglich vermehrt an Bedeutung, was neue Anforderungen an den Produktentstehungsprozess (PEP) und die Zusammenarbeit in diesem schafft. Mit diesen Herausforderungen sieht sich auch der Forschungscampus ARENA2036 konfrontiert. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung eines für die interdisziplinäre, interorganisationale Zusammenarbeit geeigneten PEP-Modells. Dieses wird auf Basis von theoretischen Grundlagen, Experteninterviews und unter Berücksichtigung der praktischen Gegebenheiten in ARENA2036 modelliert. Der finale PEP untergliedert sich in einen übergeordneten Prozess, in den die individuellen PEPs der ARENA2036-Partner untergeordnet sind. Durch diese Struktur können die heterogenen PEPs der Partner vereint und die notwendige forscherische Freiheit und Flexibilität gewährleistet werden. Weiterhin wird der PEP durch geeignete Konzepte und Methoden der kooperativen Zusammenarbeit flankiert.
Intermittent time series forecasting is a challenging task which still needs particular attention of researchers. The more unregularly events occur, the more difficult is it to predict them. With Croston’s approach in 1972 (1.Nr. 3:289–303), intermittence and demand of a time series were investigated the first time separately. He proposes an exponential smoothing in his attempt to generate a forecast which corresponds to the demand per period in average. Although this algorithm produces good results in the field of stock control, it does not capture the typical characteristics of intermittent time series within the final prediction. In this paper, we investigate a time series’ intermittence and demand individually, forecast the upcoming demand value and inter-demand interval length using recent machine learning algorithms, such as long-short-term-memories and light-gradient-boosting machines, and reassemble both information to generate a prediction which preserves the characteristics of an intermittent time series. We compare the results against Croston’s approach, as well as recent forecast procedures where no split is performed.
Im Kampf gegen die Ausbreitung des Corona-Virus waren flächendeckende Schulschließungen seit Ausbruch der Pandemie eine zentrale politische Maßnahme. Infolgedessen kam es zu erheblichen Lernzeiteinbußen unter allen Schüler*innen, worunter insbesondere Kinder und Jugendliche aus benachteiligten Verhältnissen immer noch leiden. Über die Auswirkungen der Corona-Pandemie auf das deutsche Bildungssystem wird diskutiert und Maßnahmen zu deren Eindämmung aufgesetzt.
COVID-19 and educational inequality: How school closures affect low- and high-achieving students

In spring 2020, governments around the globe shut down schools to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus. We argue that low-achieving students may be particularly affected by the lack of educator support during school closures. We collect detailed time-use information on students before and during the school closures in a survey of 1099 parents in Germany. We find that while students on average reduced their daily learning time of 7.4 h by about half, the reduction was significantly larger for low-achievers (4.1 h) than for high-achievers (3.7 h). Low-achievers disproportionately replaced learning time with detrimental activities such as TV or computer games rather than with activities more conducive to child development. The learning gap was not compensated by parents or schools who provided less support for low-achieving students.
Nach Charles Darwin bestimmt die Kompetenz im Bereich Veränderungsmanagement zunehmend die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Organisationen: »It's not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one most adaptable to change.« Diese Sichtweise gewinnt auf Basis der mit Social Media verbundenen Veränderung der Unternehmensumwelt weiter an Bedeutung. Social Media eröffnet neue Freiheitsgrade in der unternehmensinternen aber auch gesellschaftlichen Kommunikation, die unumkehrbar und in einer rasanten Geschwindigkeit Unternehmen mit sich selbst konfrontieren. Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen legen nahe, dass die meisten Unternehmen die Bedeutung ihrer eigenen Veränderungskompetenz noch nicht vollständig erfasst haben. Der Umgang mit Wandel ist in vielen Fällen naiv und folgt tradierten Organisationsmodellen. Unternehmen lassen sich jedoch nicht mechanisch im Stile einer Maschine verändern. Daher sind Ansätze gefragt, die den Fokus eher auf kulturelle und mikropolitische Faktoren lenken, prozessorientiert vorgehen und Social Media schrittweise in das eigene Geschäftsmodell integrieren. Der wichtigste Faktor ist und bleibt jedoch die Qualität der Führung. Das Top Management und final die Shareholder von Unternehmen müssen sich daher erneut überlegen, ob sie speziell in dieser Hinsicht optimal aufgestellt sind.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the main elements of successful customer loyalty programs in general and emotional components of the buying process in order to determine loyalty programs for fashion retailers.
Findings: The results of this study indicate that loyalty programs in fashion retail require considerable non-monetary benefits such as sense of exclusive membership and enhanced status to distinguish from competitors customer loyalty programs.
The extracellular environment of vascular cells in vivo is complex in its chemical composition, physical properties, and architecture. Consequently, it has been a great challenge to study vascular cell responses in vitro, either to understand their interaction with their native environment or to investigate their interaction with artificial structures such as implant surfaces. New procedures and techniques from materials science to fabricate bio-scaffolds and surfaces have enabled novel studies of vascular cell responses under well-defined, controllable culture conditions. These advancements are paving the way for a deeper understanding of vascular cell biology and materials–cell interaction. Here, we review previous work focusing on the interaction of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and endothelial cells (ECs) with materials having micro- and nanostructured surfaces. We summarize fabrication techniques for surface topographies, materials, geometries, biochemical functionalization, and mechanical properties of such materials. Furthermore, various studies on vascular cell behavior and their biological responses to micro- and nanostructured surfaces are reviewed. Emphasis is given to studies of cell morphology and motility, cell proliferation, the cytoskeleton and cell-matrix adhesions, and signal transduction pathways of vascular cells. We finalize with a short outlook on potential interesting future studies.
Poly(dimethylsiloxane) can be covalently coated with ultrathin NCO-sP(EO-stat-PO) hydrogel layers which permit covalent binding of cell adhesive moieties, while minimizing unspecific cell adhesion on non-functionalized areas. We applied long term uniaxial cyclic tensile strain (CTS) and revealed (a) the preservation of protein and cell-repellent properties of the NCO-sP(EO-stat-PO) coating and (b) the stability and bioactivity of a covalently bound fibronectin (FN) line pattern. We studied the adhesion of human dermal fibroblast (HDFs) on non-modified NCO-sP(EO-stat-PO) coatings and on the FN. HDFs adhered to FN and oriented their cell bodies and actin fibers along the FN lines independently of the direction of CTS. This mechanical long term stability of the bioactive, patterned surface allows unraveling biomechanical stimuli for cellular signaling and behavior to understand physiological and pathological cell phenomenon. Additionally, it allows for the application in wound healing assays, tissue engineering, and implant development demanding spatial control over specific cell adhesion.
The physiology of vascular cells depends on stimulating mechanical forces caused by pulsatile flow. Thus, mechano-transduction processes and responses of primary human endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) have been studied to reveal cell-type specific differences which may contribute to vascular tissue integrity. Here, we investigate the dynamic reorientation response of ECs and SMCs cultured on elastic membranes over a range of stretch frequencies from 0.01 to 1 Hz. ECs and SMCs show different cell shape adaptation responses (reorientation) dependent on the frequency. ECs reveal a specific threshold frequency (0.01 Hz) below which no responses is detectable while the threshold frequency for SMCs could not be determined and is speculated to be above 1 Hz. Interestingly, the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and focal adhesions system, as well as changes in the focal adhesion area, can be observed for both cell types and is dependent on the frequency. RhoA and Rac1 activities are increased for ECs but not for SMCs upon application of a uniaxial cyclic tensile strain. Analysis of membrane protrusions revealed that the spatial protrusion activity of ECs and SMCs is independent of the application of a uniaxial cyclic tensile strain of 1 Hz while the total number of protrusions is increased for ECs only. Our study indicates differences in the reorientation response and the reaction times of the two cell types in dependence of the stretching frequency, with matching data for actin cytoskeleton, focal adhesion realignment, RhoA/Rac1 activities, and membrane protrusion activity. These are promising results which may allow cell-type specific activation of vascular cells by frequency selective mechanical stretching. This specific activation of different vascular cell types might be helpful in improving strategies in regenerative medicine.
Optimization-based design automation for analog ICs still remains behind the demands. A promising alternative is given by procedural approaches such as parameterized generators, also known as PCells. We are working on a complete analog design flow based on parameterized generators for entire circuits and corresponding layout modules. Because the conventional programming of such enhanced generators is far too complicated and costly, new methods are needed to ease their development. This paper presents gPCDS (graphical PCDS), a novel tool for a designer-oriented development of schematic module generators, integrated into a common schematic entry environment. The tool is based on PCDS (Parameterized Circuit Description Scheme), a meta-language for the creation of parametrized analog circuits. Schematic module generators are a very desirable complement to layout module generators in order to achieve a seamless schematic- driven layout design flow on module level. By facilitating a way of generator development that matches a design expert’s mentality, gPCDS contributes to close this gap in the analog design flow.
Im Bereich integrierter Schaltungen (ICs) für die Fahrzeugelektronik ist in den letzten Jahren ein Trend zum Einsatz komplexer Mixed-Signal-Komponenten erkennbar. Dies führt dazu, dass ein altes Problem zunehmend in den Fokus der EDA-Entwickler rückt: Während der digitale Entwurfsfluss hoch automatisiert ist, findet der Entwurf analoger Komponenten überwiegend in einem manuellen, zeitaufwändigen und interaktiven Entwurfsstil statt. Die folgende Arbeit beschreibt ein Konzept, diesen Mangel mit Hilfe eines durchgängigen analogen Entwurfsflusses unter Verwendung so genannter Modul-Generatoren zu mildern. Der vorgestellte Ansatz zur Erzeugung von Schaltkreis-Automatismen berücksichtigt die implizite Nutzung von Erfahrungswissen des Designers, bietet eine volle Topologie-Flexibilität und steigert die Wiederverwendung („re-use“) gängiger Schaltungstopologien. Die erreichten Zwischenergebnisse lassen einen erheblichen Nutzen erkennen und zeigen das Potenzial sogenannter „Parametrisierter Schaltkreise“ auf, den Automatisierungsgrad des analogen Schaltungsentwurfs zu steigern.
Indoor localization systems are becoming more and more important with the digitalization of the industrial sector. Sensor data such as the current position of machines, transport vehicles, goods or tools represent an essential component of cyber physical production systems (CCPS). However, due to the high costs of these sensors, they are not widespread and are used mainly in special scenarios. However, especially optical indoor positioning systems (OIPS) based on cameras have certain advantages due to their technological specifications. In this paper, the application scenarios and requirements as well as their characteristics are presented and a classification approach of OIPS is introduced.
