Projektmanagement
(2020)
Additive Manufacturing is increasingly used in the industrial sector as a result of continuous development. In the Production Planning and Control (PPC) system, AM enables an agile response in the area of detailed and process planning, especially for a large number of plants. For this purpose, a concept for a PPC system for AM is presented, which takes into account the requirements for integration into the operational enterprise software system. The technical applicability will be demonstrated by individual implemented sections. The presented solution approach promises a more efficient utilization of the plants and a more elastic use.
We discuss the fabrication technologies for IC chips in this chapter. We will focus on the main process steps and especially on those aspects that are of particular importance for understanding how they affect, and in some cases drive, the layout of ICs. All our analyses in this chapter will be for silicon as the base material; the principles and understanding gained can be applied to other substrates as well. Following a brief introduction to the fundamentals of IC fabrication (Sect. 2.1) and the base material used in it, namely silicon (Sect. 2.2), we discuss the photolithography process deployed for all structuring work in Sect. 2.3. We will then present in Sect. 2.4 some theoretical opening remarks on typical phenomena encountered in IC fabrication. Knowledge of these phenomena is very useful for understanding the process steps we cover in Sects. 2.5–2.8. We examine a simple exemplar process in Sect. 2.9 and observe how a field-effect transistor (FET) – the most important device in modern integrated circuits—is created. To drive the key points home, we provide a review of each topic at the end of every section from the point of view of layout design by discussing relevant physical design aspects.
While many maintainability metrics have been explicitly designed for service-based systems, tool-supported approaches to automatically collect these metrics are lacking. Especially in the context of microservices, decentralization and technological heterogeneity may pose challenges for static analysis. We therefore propose the modular and extensible RAMA approach (RESTful API Metric Analyzer) to calculate such metrics from machine-readable interface descriptions of RESTful services. We also provide prototypical tool support, the RAMA CLI, which currently parses the formats OpenAPI, RAML, and WADL and calculates 10 structural service-based metrics proposed in scientific literature. To make RAMA measurement results more actionable, we additionally designed a repeatable benchmark for quartile-based threshold ranges (green, yellow, orange, red). In an exemplary run, we derived thresholds for all RAMA CLI metrics from the interface descriptions of 1,737 publicly available RESTful APIs. Researchers and practitioners can use RAMA to evaluate the maintainability of RESTful services or to support the empirical evaluation of new service interface metrics.
Intelligent systems and services are the strategic targets of many current digitalization efforts and part of massive digital transformations based on digital technologies with artificial intelligence. Digital platform architectures and ecosystems provide an essential base for intelligent digital systems. The paper raises an important question: Which development paths are induced by current innovations in the field of artificial intelligence and digitalization for enterprise architectures? Digitalization disrupts existing enterprises, technologies, and economies and promotes the architecture of cognitive and open intelligent environments. This has a strong impact on new opportunities for value creation and the development of intelligent digital systems and services. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, service computing, cloud computing, blockchains, big data with analysis, mobile systems, and social business network systems are essential drivers of digitalization. We investigate the development of intelligent digital systems supported by a suitable digital enterprise architecture. We present methodological advances and an evolutionary path for architectures with an integral service and value perspective to enable intelligent systems and services that effectively combine digital strategies and digital architectures with artificial intelligence.
Today, many companies are adapting their strategy, business models, products, services as well as business processes and information systems in order to expand their digitalization level through intelligent systems and services. The paper raises an important question: What are cognitive co-creation mechanisms for extending digital services and architectures to readjust the usage value of smart services? Typically, extensions of digital services and products and their architectures are manual design tasks that are complex and require specialized, rare experts. The current publication explores the basic idea of extending specific digital artifacts, such as intelligent service architectures, through mechanisms of cognitive co-creation to enable a rapid evolutionary path and better integration of humans and intelligent systems. We explore the development of intelligent service architectures through a combined, iterative, and permanent task of co-creation between humans and intelligent systems as part of a new concept of cognitively adapted smart services. In this paper, we present components of a new platform for the joint co-creation of cognitive services for an ecosystem of intelligent services that enables the adaptation of digital services and architectures.
Monday is unique for its reputation as a “bad” day—one that is characterized by pessimism and reluctance as noted by Rystrom and Benson (Financ Anal J 45(5):75–78, 1989). But the extent to which this applies to stock markets is still in dispute. While early evidence points to a Monday effect leading to negative returns, recent studies tend to suggest its disappearance or reversal. As a replication study, this paper searches for new evidence of this effect in the German stock market. We use data on the German blue-chip index DAX between 2000 and 2017 to test for the presence of a Monday effect by applying regression and controlling with GARCH analysis. The observation period provides a detailed insight into different market phases in one of the most liquid and information efficient international stock markets. Our results contribute no evidence to the persistent existence of a Monday effect on the German stock market. Our analysis is robust against the background of different market sentiments before, during and after the financial crisis.
This book covers the fundamental knowledge of layout design from the ground up, addressing both physical design, as generally applied to digital circuits, and analog layout. Such knowledge provides the critical awareness and insights a layout designer must possess to convert a structural description produced during circuit design into the physical layout used for IC/PCB fabrication.
The critical process parameters cell density and viability during mammalian cell cultivation are assessed by UV/VIS spectroscopy in combination with multivariate data analytical methods. This direct optical detection technique uses a commercial optical probe to acquire spectra in a label-free way without signal enhancement. For the cultivation, an inverse cultivation protocol is applied, which simulates the exponential growth phase by exponentially replacing cells and metabolites of a growing Chinese hamster ovary cell batch with fresh medium. For the simulation of the death phase, a batch of growing cells is progressively replaced by a batch with completely starved cells. Thus, the most important parts of an industrial batch cultivation are easily imitated. The cell viability was determined by the well-established method partial least squares regression (PLS). To further improve process knowledge, the viability has been determined from the spectra based on a multivariate curve resolution (MCR) model. With this approach, the progress of the cultivations can be continuously monitored solely based on an UV/VIS sensor. Thus, the monitoring of critical process parameters is possible inline within a mammalian cell cultivation process, especially the viable cell density. In addition, the beginning of cell death can be detected by this method which allows us to determine the cell viability with acceptable error. The combination of inline UV/VIS spectroscopy with multivariate curve resolution generates additional process knowledge complementary to PLS and is considered a suitable process analytical tool for monitoring industrial cultivation processes.
his book highlights new trends and challenges in intelligent systems, which play an important part in the digital transformation of many areas of science and practice. It includes papers offering a deeper understanding of the human-centred perspective on artificial intelligence, of intelligent value co-creation, ethics, value-oriented digital models, transparency, and intelligent digital architectures and engineering to support digital services and intelligent systems, the transformation of structures in digital businesses and intelligent systems based on human practices, as well as the study of interaction and the co-adaptation of humans and systems. All papers were originally presented at the International KES Conference on Human Centred Intelligent Systems 2020 (KES HCIS 2020), held on June 17–19, 2020, in Split, Croatia.
Our paper gives first answers on a fundamental question: how can the design of architectures of intelligent digital systems and services be accomplished methodologically? Intelligent systems and services are the goals of many current digitalization efforts today and part of massive digital transformation efforts based on digital technologies. Digital systems and services are the foundation of digital platforms and ecosystems. Digtalization disrupts existing businesses, technologies, and economies and promotes the architecture of open environments. This has a strong impact on new value-added opportunities and the development of intelligent digital systems and services. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, services computing, cloud computing, big data with analytics, mobile systems, and social enterprise networks systems are important enablers of digitalization. The current publication presents our research on the architecture of intelligent digital ecosystems and products and services influenced by the service-dominant logic. We present original methodological extensions and a new reference model for digital architectures with an integral service and value perspective to model intelligent systems and services that effectively align digital strategies and architectures with artificial intelligence as main elements to support intelligent digitalization.
Power line communications (PLC) reuse the existing power-grid infrastructure for the transmission of data signals. As power line the communication technology does not require a dedicated network setup, it can be used to connect a multitude of sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Those IoT devices could be deployed in homes, streets, or industrial environments for sensing and to control related applications. The key challenge faced by future IoT-oriented narrowband PLC networks is to provide a high quality of service (QoS). In fact, the power line channel has been traditionally considered too hostile. Combined with the fact that spectrum is a scarce resource and interference from other users, this requirement calls for means to increase spectral efficiency radically and to improve link reliability. However, the research activities carried out in the last decade have shown that it is a suitable technology for a large number of applications. Motivated by the relevant impact of PLC on IoT, this paper proposed a cooperative spectrum allocation in IoT-oriented narrowband PLC networks using an iterative water-filling algorithm.
Automatic classification of rotating machinery defects using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms
(2020)
Electric machines and motors have been the subject of enormous development. New concepts in design and control allow expanding their applications in different fields. The vast amount of data have been collected almost in any domain of interest. They can be static; that is to say, they represent real-world processes at a fixed point of time. Vibration analysis and vibration monitoring, including how to detect and monitor anomalies in vibration data are widely used techniques for predictive maintenance in high-speed rotating machines. However, accurately identifying the presence of a bearing fault can be challenging in practice, especially when the failure is still at its incipient stage, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the monitored signal is small. The main objective of this work is to design a system that will analyze the vibration signals of a rotating machine, based on recorded data from sensors, in the time/frequency domain. As a consequence of such substantial interest, there has been a dramatic increase of interest in applying Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to this task. An ML system will be used to classify and detect abnormal behavior and recognize the different levels of machine operation modes. The proposed solution can be deployed as predictive maintenance for Industry 4.0.
Internet of Things (IoT) provides a strong platform for computer users to connect objects, devices, and people to the Internet for exchanging or sharing of information with each other. IoT is growing rapidly and is expected to adapt to disciplines such as manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and robotics. Furthermore, the new concept of IoT is proposed and shown, especially for robotics areas as Internet of Robotics Things (IoRT). IoRT is a mixed structure of diverse technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. However, to promote and realize IoRT, digitization and digital transformation should be proceeded and implemented in the robotics enterprise. In this paper, we propose and architecture framework for IoRT-based digital platforms an verify it using a planned case in a global robotics enterprise. The associated challenges and future research directions in this field are also presented.
Purpose: Gliomas are the most common and aggressive type of brain tumors due to their infiltrative nature and rapid progression. The process of distinguishing tumor boundaries from healthy cells is still a challenging task in the clinical routine. Fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI modality can provide the physician with information about tumor infiltration. Therefore, this paper proposes a new generic deep learning architecture, namely DeepSeg, for fully automated detection and segmentation of the brain lesion using FLAIR MRI data.
Methods: The developed DeepSeg is a modular decoupling framework. It consists of two connected core parts based on an encoding and decoding relationship. The encoder part is a convolutional neural network (CNN) responsible for spatial information extraction. The resulting semantic map is inserted into the decoder part to get the full-resolution probability map. Based on modified U-Net architecture, different CNN models such as residual neural network (ResNet), dense convolutional network (DenseNet), and NASNet have been utilized in this study.
Results: The proposed deep learning architectures have been successfully tested and evaluated on-line based on MRI datasets of brain tumor segmentation (BraTS 2019) challenge, including s336 cases as training data and 125 cases for validation data. The dice and Hausdorff distance scores of obtained segmentation results are about 0.81 to 0.84 and 9.8 to 19.7 correspondingly.
Conclusion: This study showed successful feasibility and comparative performance of applying different deep learning models in a new DeepSeg framework for automated brain tumor segmentation in FLAIR MR images. The proposed DeepSeg is open source and freely available at https://github.com/razeineldin/DeepSeg/.
Investigation of tympanic membrane influences on middle-ear impedance measurements and simulations
(2020)
This study simulates acoustic impedance measurements in the human ear canal and investigates error influences due to improperly accounted evanescence in the probe’s near field, cross-section area changes, curvature of the ear canal, and pressure inhomogeneities across the tympanic membrane, which arise mainly at frequencies above 10 kHz. Evanescence results from strongly damped modes of higher order, which can only be found in the near field of the sound source and are excited due to sharp cross-sectional changes as they occur at the transition from the probe loudspeaker to the ear canal. This means that different impedances are measured depending on the probe design. The influence of evanescence cannot be eliminated completely from measurements, however, it can be reduced by a probe design with larger distance between speaker and microphone. A completely different approach to account for the influence of evanescence is to evaluate impedance measurements with the help of a finite element model, which takes the precise arrangement of microphone and speaker in the measurement into account. The latter is shown in this study exemplary on impedance measurements at a tube terminated with a steel plate. Furthermore, the influences of shape changes of the tympanic membrane and ear canal curvature on impedance are investigated.
Companies compete more and more as integrated supply chains rather than as individual firms. The success of the entire supply chain determines the economic well-being of the individual company. With management attention shifting to supply chains, the role of management accounting naturally must extend to the cross-company layer as well. This book demonstrates how management accounting can make a significant contribution to supply chain success. It targets students who are already familiar with the fundamentals of accounting and now want to extend their expertise in the field of cross company (or network) management accounting. Practitioners will draw valuable insights from the text as well.
The SDGs give an overview of the world's development challenges of the present and the coming decades and set a new global agenda for more inclusive and sustainable development and growth. These challenges also represent opportunities for social innovations and the creation of scalable and financially self-sustaining solutions by businesses and (social) entrepreneurs. Examples of solutions to social and ecological challenges are for instance providing low-income communities with access to affordable, quality products and services in areas such as water and sanitation, energy, health, education and finance. New business models can meet customer demands by providing solutions and thereby create opportunities for low-income people as employees, suppliers and distributors.
Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State (HATEOAS) is one of the core constraints of REST. It refers to the concept of embedding hyperlinks into the response of a queried or manipulated resource to show a client possible follow-up actions and transitions to related resources. Thus, this concept aims to provide a client with a navigational support when interacting with a Web-based application. Although HATEOAS should be implemented by any Web-based API claiming to be RESTful, API providers tend to offer service descriptions in place of embedding hyperlinks into responses. Instead of relying on a navigational support, a client developer has to read the service description and has to identify resources and their URIs that are relevant for the interaction with the API. In this paper, we introduce an approach that aims to identify transitions between resources of a Web-based API by systematically analyzing the service description only. We devise an algorithm that automatically derives a URI Model from the service description and then analyzes the payload schemas to identify feasible values for the substitution of path parameters in URI Templates. We implement this approach as a proxy application, which injects hyperlinks representing transitions into the response payload of a queried or manipulated resource. The result is a HATEOAS-like navigational support through an API. Our first prototype operates on service descriptions in the OpenAPI format. We evaluate our approach using ten real-world APIs from different domains. Furthermore, we discuss the results as well as the observations captured in these tests.
Standardisation of breath sampling is important for application of breath analysis in clinical settings. By studying the effect of room airing on indoor and breath analytes and by generating time series of room air with different sampling intervals we sought to get further insights into room air metabolism, to detect the relevance of exogenous VOCs and to make conclusions about their consideration for the interpretation of exhaled breath. Room air and exhaled breath of a healthy subject were analysed before and after room airing. Furthermore a time series of room air with doors and windows closed was taken over 84 h by an automatic sampling every 180 min. A second times series studied room air analytes over 70 h with samples taken every 16.5 min. For breath and room air measurements an IMS coupled to a multi-capillary column (IMS/MCC) [Bio-Scout® - B&S Analytik GmbH, Dortmund, Germany] was used. The peaks were characterized using the Software Visual Now (B&S Analytik, Dortmund Germany) and identified using the software package MIMA (version 1.1, provided by the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarbrücken, Germany) and the database 20160426_SubstanzDbNIST_122 (B & S Analytik GmbH, Dortmund, Germany). In the morning 4 analytes (Decamethylcylopentasiloxane [541-02-6]; Pentan-2-one [107-87-9] – Dimer; Hexan-1-al [66-25-1]; Pentan-2-one [107-87-9]) – Monomer showed high intensities in the room air and exhaled breath. They were significantly but not equally reduced by room airing. The time series about 84 h showed a time dependent decrease of analytes (limonen-monomer and -dimer; Decamethylcylopentasiloxane, Butan-1-ol, Butan-1-ol) as well as increase (Pentan-2-one [107-87-9] – Dimer). Shorter sampling intervals exhibited circadian variations of analyte concentrations for many analytes. Breath sampling in the morning needs room airing before starting. Then the variation of the intensity of indoor analytes can be kept small. The time series of indoor analytes show, that their intensities have a different behaviour, with time dependent declines, constant increases and circadian variations, dependent on room airing. This has implications on the breath sampling procedure and the intrepretation of exhaled breath.
Exogenous factors of influence on exhaled breath analysis by ion-mobility spectrometry (MCC/IMS)
(2019)
The interpretation of exhaled breath analysis needs to address to the influence of exogenous factors, especially to a transfer of confounding analytes by the test persons. A test person who was exposed to a disinfectant had exhaled breath analysis by MCC/IMS (Bioscout®) after different time intervals. Additionally, a new sampling method with inhalation of synthetic air before breath analysis was tested. After exposure to the disinfectant, 3-Pentanone monomer, 3-Pentanone dimer, Hexanal, 3-Pentanone trimer, 2-Propanamine, 1-Propanol, Benzene, Nonanal showed significantly higher intensities, in exhaled breath and air of the examination room, compared to the corresponding baseline measurements. Only one ingredient of the disinfectant (1-Propanol) was identical to the 8 analytes. Prolonging the time intervals between exposure and breath analysis showed a decrease of their intensities. However, the half-time of the decrease was different. The inhalation of synthetic air - more than consequently airing the examination room with fresh air - reduced the exogenous and also relevant endogenous analytes, leading to a reduction and even changing polarity of the alveolar gradient. The interpretation of exhaled breath needs further knowledge about the former residence of the proband and the likelihood and relevance of the inhalation of local, site-specific and confounding exogenous analytes by him. Their inhalation facilitates a transfer to the examination room and a detection of high concentrations in room air and exhaled breath, but also the exhalation of new analytes. This may lead to a misinterpretation of these analytes as endogenous resp. disease-specific ones.
An important shift in software delivery is the definition of a cloud service as an independently deployable unit by following the microservices architectural style. Container virtualization facilitates development and deployment by ensuring independence from the runtime environment. Thus, cloud services are built as container based systems - a set of containers that control the lifecycle of software and middleware components. However, using containers leads to a new paradigm for service development and operation: Self service environments enable software developers to deploy and operate container based systems on their own - you build it, you run it. Following this approach, more and more operational aspects are transferred towards the responsibility of software developers. In this work, we propose a concept for self-adaptive cloud services based on container virtualization in line with the microservices architectural style and present a model-based approach that assists software developers in building these services. Based on operational models specified by developers, the mechanisms required for self-adaptation are automatically generated. As a result, each container automatically adapts itself in a reactive, decentralized manner. We evaluate a prototype which leverages the emerging TOSCA standard to specify operational behavior in a portable manner.
In recent years, the parallel computing community has shown increasing interest in leveraging cloud resources for executing parallel applications. Clouds exhibit several fundamental features of economic value, like on-demand resource provisioning and a pay-per-use model. Additionally, several cloud providers offer their resources with significant discounts; however, possessing limited availability. Such volatile resources are an auspicious opportunity to reduce the costs arising from computations, thus achieving higher cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose a cost model for quantifying the monetary costs of executing parallel applications in cloud environments, leveraging volatile resources. Using this cost model, one is able to determine a configuration of a cloud-based parallel system that minimizes the total costs of executing an application.
Parallel applications are the computational backbone of major industry trends and grand challenges in science. Whereas these applications are typically constructed for dedicated High Performance Computing clusters and supercomputers, the cloud emerges as attractive execution environment, which provides on-demand resource provisioning and a pay-per-use model. However, cloud environments require specific application properties that may restrict parallel application design. As a result, design trade-offs are required to simultaneously maximize parallel performance and benefit from cloud-specific characteristics.
In this paper, we present a novel approach to assess the cloud readiness of parallel applications based on the design decisions made. By discovering and understanding the implications of these parallel design decisions on an application’s cloud readiness, our approach supports the migration of parallel applications to the cloud. We introduce an assessment procedure, its underlying meta model, and a corresponding instantiation to structure this multi-dimensional design space. For evaluation purposes, we present an extensive case study comprising three parallel applications and discuss their cloud readiness based on our approach.
Data analytics tasks on large datasets are computationally intensive and often demand the compute power of cluster environments. Yet, data cleansing, preparation, dataset characterization and statistics or metrics computation steps are frequent. These are mostly performed ad hoc, in an explorative manner and mandate low response times. But, such steps are I/O intensive and typically very slow due to low data locality, inadequate interfaces and abstractions along the stack. These typically result in prohibitively expensive scans of the full dataset and transformations on interface boundaries.
In this paper, we examine R as analytical tool, managing large persistent datasets in Ceph, a wide-spread cluster file-system. We propose nativeNDP – a framework for Near Data Processing that pushes down primitive R tasks and executes them in-situ, directly within the storage device of a cluster-node. Across a range of data sizes, we show that nativeNDP is more than an order of magnitude faster than other pushdown alternatives.
Indoor localization systems are becoming more and more important with the digitalization of the industrial sector. Sensor data such as the current position of machines, transport vehicles, goods or tools represent an essential component of cyber physical production systems (CCPS). However, due to the high costs of these sensors, they are not widespread and are used mainly in special scenarios. However, especially optical indoor positioning systems (OIPS) based on cameras have certain advantages due to their technological specifications. In this paper, the application scenarios and requirements as well as their characteristics are presented and a classification approach of OIPS is introduced.
Enterprises are presently transforming their strategy, culture, processes, and their information systems to become more digital. The digital transformation deeply disrupts existing enterprises and economies. Digitization fosters the development of IT systems with many rather small and distributed structures, like Internet of Things or mobile systems. Since years a lot of new business opportunities appeared using the potential of the Internet and related digital technologies, like Internet of Things, services computing, cloud computing, big data with analytics, mobile systems, collaboration networks, and cyber physical systems. This has a strong impact for architecting digital services and products. The change from a closed-world modeling perspective to more flexible open-world composition and evolution of system architectures defines the moving context for adaptable systems, which are essential to enable the digital transformation. In this paper, we are focusing on a decision-oriented architectural composition approach to support the transformation for digital services and products.
Revenue management information systems are very important in the hospitality sector. Revenue decisions can be better prepared based on different information from different information systems and decision strategies. There is a lack of research about the usage of such systems in small and medium-sized hotels and architectural configurations. Our paper empirically shows the current development of revenue information systems. Furthermore, we define future developments and requirements to improve such systems and the architectural base.
Software evolvability is an important quality attribute, yet one difficult to grasp. A certain base level of it is allegedly provided by service- and microservice-based systems, but many software professionals lack systematic understanding of the reasons and preconditions for this. We address this issue via the proxy of architectural modifiability tactics. By qualitatively mapping principles and patterns of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and microservices onto tactics and analyzing the results, we cannot only generate insights into service-oriented evolution qualities, but can also provide a modifiability comparison of the two popular service-based architectural styles. The results suggest that both SOA and microservices possess several inherent qualities beneficial for software evolution. While both focus strongly on loose coupling and encapsulation, there are also differences in the way they strive for modifiability (e.g. governance vs. evolutionary design). To leverage the insights of this research, however, it is necessary to find practical ways to incorporate the results as guidance into the software development process.
While several service-based maintainability metrics have been proposed in the scientific literature, reliable approaches to automatically collect these metrics are lacking. Since static analysis is complicated for decentralized and technologically diverse microservice-based systems, we propose a dynamic approach to calculate such metrics from runtime data via distributed tracing. The approach focuses on simplicity, extensibility, and broad applicability. As a first prototype, we implemented a Java application with a Zipkin integrator, 23 different metrics, and five export formats. We demonstrated the feasibility of the approach by analyzing the runtime data of an example microservice based system. During an exploratory study with six participants, 14 of the 18 services were invoked via the system’s web interface. For these services, all metrics were calculated correctly from the generated traces.
Companies are constantly changing their business process models. In team environments, different versions of a process model are created at the same time. These versions of a process model need to be merged from time to time to consolidate changes and create a new common version.
In this short paper, we propose a solution for modifying a merge result. The goal is to create a meaningful merge result by adding connector nodes to the model at specific locations. This increases the amount of possible result models and reduces additional implementation effort.
Efficient and robust 3D object reconstruction based on monocular SLAM and CNN semantic segmentation
(2019)
Various applications implement slam technology, especially in the field of robot navigation. We show the advantage of slam technology for independent 3d object reconstruction. To receive a point cloud of every object of interest void of its environment, we leverage deep learning. We utilize recent cnn deep learning research for accurate semantic segmentation of objects. In this work, we propose two fusion methods for cnn-based semantic segmentation and slam for the 3d reconstruction of objects of interest in order to obtain a more robustness and efficiency. As a major novelty, we introduce a cnn-based masking to focus slam only on feature points belonging to every single object. Noisy, complex or even non-rigid features in the background are filtered out, improving the estimation of the camera pose and the 3d point cloud of each object. Our experiments are constrained to the reconstruction of industrial objects. We present an analysis of the accuracy and performance of each method and compare the two methods describing their pros and cons.
Context: Organizations are increasingly challenged by dynamic and technical market environments. Traditional product roadmapping practices such as detailed and fixed long-term planning typically fail in such environments. Therefore, companies are actively seeking ways to improve their product roadmapping approach. Goal: This paper aims at identifying problems and challenges with respect to product roadmapping. In addition, it aims at understanding how companies succeed in improving their roadmapping practices in their respective company contexts. The study focuses on mid-sized and large companies developing software-intensive products in dynamic and technical market environments. Method: We conducted semi structured expert interviews with 15 experts from 13 German companies and conducted a thematic data analysis. Results: The analysis showed that a significant number of companies is still struggling with traditional feature based product-roadmapping and opinion based prioritization of features. The most promising areas for improvement are stating the outcomes a company is trying to achieve and making them part of the roadmap, sharing or co-developing the roadmap with stakeholders, and the establishing discovery activities.
Context: Organizations are increasingly challenged by high market dynamics, rapidly evolving technologies and shifting user expectations. In consequence, many organizations are struggling with their ability to provide reliable product roadmaps by applying traditional roadmapping approaches. Currently, many companies are seeking opportunities to improve their product roadmapping practices and strive for new roadmapping approaches. A typical first step towards advancing the roadmapping capabilities of an organization is to assess the current situation. Therefore, the so-called maturity model DEEP for assessing the product roadmapping capabilities of companies operating in dynamic and uncertain environments has been developed and published by the authors.
Objective: The aim of this article is to conduct an initial validation of the DEEP model in order to understand its applicability better and to see if important concepts are missing. In addition, the aim of this article is to evolve the model based on the findings from the initial validation.
Method: The model has been given to practitioners such as product managers with the request to perform a self-assessment of the current product roadmapping practices in their company. Afterwards, interviews with each participant have been conducted in order to gain insights.
Results: The initial validation revealed that some of the stages of the model need to be rearranged and minor usability issues were found. The overall structure of the model was well received. The study resulted in the development of the version 1.1 of the DEEP product roadmap maturity model which is also presented in this article.
The investigation of stress requires to distinguish between stress caused by physical activity and stress that is caused by psychosocial factors. The behaviour of the heart in response to stress and physical activity is very similar in case the set of monitored parameters is reduced to one. Currently, the differentiation remains difficult and methods which only use the heart rate are not able to differentiate between stress and physical activity, without using additional sensor data input. The approach focusses on methods which generate signals providing characteristics that are useful for detecting stress, physical activity, no activity and relaxation.
Presently, many companies are transforming their strategy and product base, as well as their culture, processes and information systems to become more digital or to approach for a digital leadership. This has a strong impact for architecting digital services and products. The change from a closed-world modeling perspective to more flexible open-world composition and evolution of micro-granular system architectures defines the moving context for adaptable systems. We are focusing on a continuous bottom-up integration of micro-granular architectures for a huge amount of dynamically growing systems and services, as part of a new digital enterprise architecture for service dominant digital products.
The goal of this paper pretends to show how a bed system with an embedded system with sensor is able to analyze a person’s movement, breathing and recognizing the positions that the subject is lying on the bed during the night without any additional physical contact. The measurements are performed with sensors placed between the mattress and the frame. An Intel Edison board was used as an endpoint that served as a communication node from the mesh network to external service. Two nodes and Intel Edison are attached to the bottom of the bed frame and they are connected to the sensors.
After the initiator of the ESB Logistics Learning Factory, Prof. Vera Hummel had made experience in developing and implementing a concept for a Learning Factory for Advanced Industrial Engineering (aIE) at the University of Stuttgart, Institute IFF between 2005 and 2008, she was appointed as a full professor at ESB Business School, a faculty of Reutlingen University in March 2010. Lacking a realistic, hands on learning and teaching environment of industrial scale for its industrial engineering students, first ideas for a Learning Factory that would strongly focus on all aspects of production logistics were drafted in 2012. Already back then, a strong integration of virtual and physical factory was desired: While the Learning Factory itself would be physical, the neighboring partners along the supply chain, such as suppliers or distribution warehouses, could be added in a fully virtual way. Considering implementation of the ESB Logistics Learning Factory a strategic initiative of the university, initial funding was provided by the faculty ESB Business School itself. Following its own creed, to provide future-oriented training for the region, also primarily local suppliers and manufacturers were selected as equipment providers to the new Learning Factory. During the initialization phase, 2014, a total of three researchers and nine students worked approximately four months to set up a first assembly line, storage racks, AGVs, or pick-by-light systems in conjunction with the underlying didactical concept. Since then, several hundred of students have participated in trainings and lectures held in the ESB Logistics Learning Factory, several research projects were carried out, and multiple high-level politicians and industry executives have been touring the shop floor. Also, more than EUR 2 million in research and infrastructure funds could be secured for expansion and upgrade — allowing the ESB Logistics Learning Factory today to represent many core aspects of an Industrie 4.0 production environment.
The goal of the presented project is to develop the concept of home e-health centers for barrier-free and cross-border telemedicine. AAL technologies are already present on the market but there is still a gap to close until they can be used for ordinary patient needs. The general idea needs to be accompanied by new services, which should be brought together in order to provide a full coverage of service for the users. Sleep and stress were chosen as predominant influence in the population. The executed scientific study of available home devices analyzing sleep has provided the necessary to select appropriate devices. The first choice for the project implementation is the device EMFIT QS+. This equipment provides a part of a complete system that a home telemedical hospital can provide at a level of precision and communication with internal and/or external health services.
Business process models provide a considerable number of benefits for enterprises and organizations, but the creation of such models is costly and time-consuming, which slows down the organizational adoption of business process modeling. Social paradigms pave new ways for business process modeling by integrating stakeholders and leveraging knowledge sources. However, empirical research about the impact of social paradigms on costs of business process modeling is sparse. A better understanding of their impact could help to reduce the cost of business process modeling and improve decision-making on BPM activities. The paper constributes to this field by reporting about an empirical investigation via survey research on the perceived influence of different cost factors among experts. Our results indicate that different cost components, as well as the use of social paradigms, influence cost.
Companies are continuously changing their strategy, processes, and information systems to benefit from the digital transformation. Controlling the digital architecture and governance is the fundamental goal. Enterprise Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) systems are vital for managing digital risks threatening in modern enterprises from many different angles. The most significant constituent to GRC systems is the definition of controls that is implemented on different layers of a digital Enterprise Architecture (EA). As part of the compliant aspect of GRC, the effectiveness of these controls is assessed and reported to relevant management bodies within the enterprise. In this paper, we present a metamodel which links controls to the affected elements of a digital EA and supplies a way of expressing associated assessment techniques and results. We complement a metamodel with an expository instantiation of a control compliance cockpit in an international insurance enterprise.
This study describes a non-contact measuring and system identification procedure for evaluating inhomogeneous stiffness and damping characteristics of the annular ligament in the physiological amplitude and frequency range without the application of large static external forces that can cause unnatural displacements of the stapes. To verify the procedure, measurements were first conducted on a steel beam. Then, measurements on an individual human cadaveric temporal bone sample were performed. The estimated results support the inhomogeneous stiffness and damping distribution of the annular ligament and are in a good agreement with the multiphoton microscopy results which show that the posterior-inferior corner of the stapes footplate is the stiffest region of the annular ligament.

Due to the consequential impact of technological breakdowns, companies have to be prepared to deal with breakdowns or even better prevent them. In today's information technology, several methods and tools exist to downscale this concern. Therefore, this paper deals with the initial determination of a resilient enterprise architecture supporting predictive maintenance in the information technology domain and furthermore, concerns several mechanisms on how to reactively and proactively secure the state of resiliency on several abstraction levels. The objective of this paper is to give an overview on existing mechanisms for resiliency and to describe the foundation of an optimized approach, combining infrastructure and process mining techniques.
Research organisations are not only contributing to sustainable development but also contribute to scientific findings. As key influencers of innovation; employers and publicly funded research organisations not only have the social mandate to deal with their responsibilities regarding the environment and society, but also drive to understand their social responsibility for their employees and the impact on research and operational processes. Sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), this paper presents the results of the joint research project; LENA—Guidelines for Sustainability Management and describes how 3 of Germany’s biggest research organisations (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Leibniz Association and Helmholtz Association) face current challenges in human resource management of research organisations by the integration of a common understanding of sustainability and a broad-based framework. The empirical basis is built by a qualitative organisational ethnographical study which reflects the expert knowledge, everyday experiences and the subject-oriented interpretation of sustainability in human resource management. The result derives concrete recommendations for the institutional practice and offers structured and methodologically proven options for action addressing the stakeholders in human resource management in research institutions.
The increasing heterogenecity of students at German Universities of Applied Sciences and the growing importance of digitization call for a rethinking of teaching and learning within higher education. In the next years, changing the learning ecosystem by developing and reflecting upon new teaching and learning techniques using methods of digitalization will be both - most relevant and very challenging. The following article introduces two different learning scenarios, which exemplify the implementation of new educational models that allow discontinuity of time and place, technology and process in teaching and learning. Within a blended learning apporach, the first learning scenario aims at adapting and individualizing the knowledge transfer in the course Foundations of Computer Science by providing knowledge individually and situation-specifically. The second learning scenario proposes a web-based tool to facilitate digital learning environments and thus digital learning communities and the possibility of computer-supported learning. The overall aim of both learning scenarios is to enhance learning for diverse groups by providing a different smart learning ecosystem in stepping away from a teacher-based to a student-centered approach. Both learning scenarios exemplarily represent the educational vision of Reutlingen University - its development into an interactive university.
