One of strategically important issues of energy security of Ukraine and the countries of Europe today is to reduce the consumption of natural gas. This task is particularly relevant in winter, when a significant amount of natural gas is consumed for heating premises. Therefore, one can predict that in the nearest future, in Ukraine and European countries, premises will be heated more frequently by electrical energy.
A massive transition to electric heating of premises under conditions of the implementation of national objective in Ukraine and the countries of Europe related to a significant reduction in energy consumption necessitates to rethink the process of control over electric heating of premises. It is required that the algorithms that control power supply to premises should include mechanisms for planning the amount of electric energy consumed by an individual. This is especially true of such energy-intensive processes like heating the premises.
Therefore, it is an important task for Ukraine and the countries of Europe to work out an approach for creating systems to control electric heating of premises in a house or apartment that would take into consideration not only information about the desired temperature regime, but also information on the desired amount of electricity needed for heating.
The interaction between lipid bilayers in water has been intensively studied over the last decades. Osmotic stress was applied to evaluate the forces between two approaching lipid bilayers in aqueous solution. The force–distance relation between lipid mono- or bilayers deposited on mica sheets using a surface force apparatus (SFA) was also measured. Lipid stabilised foam films offer another possibility to study the interactions between lipid monolayers. These films can be prepared comparatively easy with very good reproducibility. Foam films consist usually of two adsorbed surfactant monolayers separated by a layer of the aqueous solution from which the film is created. Their thickness can be conveniently measured using microinterferometric techniques. Studies with foam films deliver valuable information on the interactions between lipid membranes and especially their stability and permeability. Presenting inverse black lipid membrane (BLM) foam films supply information about the properties of the lipid self-organisation in bilayers. The present paper summarises results on microscopic lipid stabilised foam films by measuring their thickness and contact angle. Most of the presented results concern foam films prepared from dispersions of the zwitterionic lipid 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (DMPC) and some of its mixtures with the anionic lipid — 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-[phospho-rac-(1-glycerol)] (DMPG).
The strength of the long range and short range forces between the lipid layers is discussed. The van der Waals attractive force is calculated. The electrostatic repulsive force is estimated from experiments at different electrolyte concentrations (NaCl, CaCl2) or by modification of the electrostatic double layer surface potential by incorporating charged lipids in the lipid monolayers. The short range interactions are studied and modified by using small carbohydrates (fructose and sucrose), ethanol (EtOH) or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Some results are compared with the structure of lipid monolayers deposited at the liquid/air interface (monolayers spread in Langmuir trough), which are one of most studied biomembrane model system. The comparison between the film thickness and the free energy of film formation is used to estimate the contribution of the different components of the disjoining pressure to the total interaction in the film and their dependence on the composition of the film forming solution.
Allyls
(2022)
This chapter addresses the importance and usage of the commercially low-volume thermoset plastics group known as allyls. The three significant subelements of this group are poly(diallylphthalates), poly(diallylisophthalates), and poly(allyldiglycol carbonate). Chemistry, processing, and properties are also described. Allyl polymers are synthesized by radical polymerizations of allyl monomers that usually do not produce high-molecular-mass macromolecules. Therefore only a few specific monomers can produce thermosetting materials. Diallyldiglycolcarbonate (CR-39) and diallylphthalates are the most significant examples that have considerably improved our everyday life.

The main challenge when driving heat pumps by PV-electricity is balancing differing electrical and thermal demands. In this article, a heuristic method for optimal operation of a heat pump driven by a maximum share of PV-electricity is presented. For this purpose, the (DHW) are activated in order shift the operation of the heat pump to times of PV-generation. The system under consideration refers to thermal and electrical demands of a single family house. It consists of a heat pump, a thermal energy storage for DHW and of grid connected heating and generation of domestic hot water, the heat pump runs with two different supply temperatures and thereby achieving a maximum overall COP. Within the algorithm for optimization a set of heuristic rules is developed in a way that the operational characteristics of the heat pump in terms of minimum running and stopping times are met as well as the limiting constraints of upper and lower limits of room temperature and energy content of electricity generated, a varying number of heat pump schedules fulfilling the bundary conditions are created. Finally, the schedule offering the maximum on-site utilization of PV-electricity with a minimum number of starts of the heat pump, which serves as secondary condition, is selected. Yearly simulations of this combination have been carried out. Initial results of this method indicate a significant rise in on-site consumption of the PV-electricity and heating demand fulfilment by renewable electricity with no need for a massive TES for the heating system in terms of a big water tank.
Coupling electricity and heat sector is one of the most necessary actions for the successful energy transition. Efficient electrification for space heating and domestic hot water generation is needed for buildings, which are not connected to any district heating network, as distributed heating demand momentarily is largely met by fossil fuels. Hence, hybrid energy systems will play a pivotal role for the energy transition in buildings. Heat pumps running on PV-electricity is one of the most widely discussed combination for this purpose. In this paper, a heuristic optimization method for the optimal operation of a heat pump driven by the objective for maximum onsite PV electricity utilization is presented. In this context, the thermal flexibility of the building and a thermal energy storage (TES) for generation of domestic hot water (DHW) are activated in order to shift the operation of the heat pump to times of PV-generation. Yearly simulations for a system consisting of heat pump, PV modules, building with floor heating installation and TES for DHW generation are carried out. Variation parameters for the simulation include room temperature amplitude (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 K) based on mean room temperature (21 °C), PV-capacity (4, 6, 8 and 10 kW) and type of heat pump (ground source and air source type). The yearly energy balances show that buildings offer significant thermal storage capacity avoiding an additional, large TES for space heating fulfillment and improving the share of onsite PV electricity utilization. With introduction of a battery, which has been analyzed as well for different sizes (1.9, 4.8, 7.7 and 10.6 kWh), the share of onsite PVelectricity utilization can even be improved. However, thermal flexibility supplemented by the varying room temperature amplitude for a bigger battery does not improve the share of onsite PV-electricity utilization. Nevertheless, even with a battery not more than 50% of the electrical load including operation of the heat pump can be covered by PV-electricity for the specific system under investigation. This is noteworthy on the one hand, since it indicates that a hybrid heating system consisting of heat pump and PV cannot solely cover the heat demand of residential buildings. One the other hand, this emphasizes the necessity to include further renewable sources like wind power, in order to draw the complete picture. This, however, is beyond the scope of this paper, which mainly focuses on introduction and verification of the novel control method with regard to a practical building.
Corporate entrepreneurship in the public sector: exploring the peculiarities of public enterprises
(2021)
Entrepreneurship is predominantly treated as a private-sector phenomenon and consequently its increasing importance in the public sector goes largely unremarked. That impedes the research field of entrepreneurship being capable of spanning multiple sectors. Accordingly, recent research calls for the study of corporate entrepreneurship (CE) as it manifests in the public sector where it can be labeled public entrepreneurship (PE). This dissertation considers government an essential entrepreneurial actor and is led by the central research question: What are the peculiarities of the public sector and how do they impact public enterprises’ entrepreneurial orientation (EO)?
Accordingly, this dissertation includes three studies focusing on public enterprises. Two of the studies set the scope of this thesis by investigating a specific type of organization in a specific context—German majority-government-owned energy suppliers. These enterprises operate in a liberalized market experiencing environmental uncertainties like competitiveness and business transformation.
The aims and results of the studies included in this dissertation can be summarized as follows: The systematic literature review illuminates the stimuli of and barriers to entrepreneurial activities in public enterprises and the potential outcomes of such activities discussed so far. The review reveals that research on EO has tended to focus on the private sector and consequently that barriers to and outcomes of entrepreneurial activities in the public sector remain under-researched. Building on these findings, the qualitative study focuses on the interrelated barriers affecting entrepreneurship in public enterprises and the outcomes of entrepreneurial activities being inhibited. The study adopts an explorative comparative causal mapping approach to address the above-mentioned research goal and the lack of clarity around how barriers identified in the public sphere are interrelated. Furthermore, the study bases its investigation on the different business segments of sales (competitive market) and the distribution grid (natural monopoly) to account for recent calls for fine-grained research on PE. Results were compared with prior findings in the public and private sector. That comparison indicates that the barriers revealed align with aspects discussed in prior research findings relating to both sectors. Examples include barriers associated with the external environment such as legal constraints and barriers originating from within the organization such as employee behavior linked to a value system that hampers entrepreneurial action. However, the most important finding is that a public enterprise’s supervisory board can hinder its progress, a finding running counter to those of previous private-sector research and one that underscores the widespread prejudice that the involvement of a public shareholder and its nominated board of directors has a negative effect on EO. The third study is quantitative (data collection via a questionnaire) and builds on both its predecessors to examine the little understood topic of board behavior and public enterprises’ social orientation as predictors of EO. The study’s results indicate that social orientation represses EO, whereas board strategy control (BSC) does not seem to predict EO. Regarding BSC, we find that the local government owners in our sample are less involved in BSC. The third study also examines board networking and finds its relationship with EO depends on the ownership structure of the public-sector organization. An important finding is that minority shareholders, such as majority privately-owned enterprises and hub firms, repress EO when engaging in board networking.
In summary, this doctoral thesis contributes to the under-researched topic of CE in the public sector. It investigates the peculiarities of this sector by focusing on the supervisory board and social oriented activities and their impact on the enterprise’s EO in the quantitative study. The thesis addresses institutional questions regarding ownership and the last study in particular contributes to expanding resource dependence theory, and invites a nuanced perspective: The original perspective suggests that interorganizational arrangements like interfirm network ties and equity holdings reduce external resource dependency and consequently improve firm performance. The findings within this thesis expose resource delivery to potential contrary effects to extend the understanding of interorganizational action with important implications for practice.
Contemporary public enterprises differ from their forebears. Today, they are more similar to private enterprises, receiving far more attention than previously, when privatization processes all over the world were in the spotlight. Furthermore, the broad research stream of entrepreneurship has so far neglected the consideration of public enterprises. To set a future research agenda, the author examines the dispersed literature using an integrative and organizing framework to identify major topics and research findings. This paper reviews articles that investigate the entrepreneurship in contemporary public enterprises. Despite the growing scholarly interest globally, this systematic literature review indicates there is no more than a loose connection between the literature streams of public entrepreneurship and corporate entrepreneurship. Specifically, the review shows that the multidimensional concept of entrepreneurial orientation has thus far been ignored, although autonomy plays a significant role in the literature review, namely in the context of the interference of the public owner. It also reveals other essential research gaps, such as the development of a modern theory of public enterprises. The linked research stream of public-sector corporate entrepreneurship offers a broad area of scholarly research and should encourage further investigation.
