We present a compact battery charger topology for weight and cost sensitive applications with an average output current of 9A targeted for 36V batteries commonly found in electric bicycles. Instead of using a conventional boost converter with large DC-link capacitors, we accomplish PFC-functionality by shaping the charging current into a sin²-shape. In addition, a novel control scheme without input-current sensing is introduced. A-priori knowledge is used to implement a feed-forward control in combination with a closed-loop output current control to maintain the target current. The use of a full-bridge/half bridge LLC converter enables operation in a wide input-voltage range.
A fully featured prototype has been built with a peak output power of 1050W. An average output power of 400W was measured, resulting in a power density of 1.8 kW/dm³. At 9A charging current, a power factor of 0.96 was measured and the efficiency exceeds 93% on average with passive rectification.
The impact of pulse charging has been evaluated on a 400Wh battery which was charged with the proposed converter as well as CC-CV-charging for reference. Both charging schemes show similar battery surface temperatures.
The aim of this work was to investigate the mean fill weight control of a continuous capsule-filling process, whether it is possible to derive controller settings from an appendant process model. To that end, a system composed out of fully automated capsule filler and an online gravimetric scale was used to control the filled weight. This setup allows to examine challenges associated with continuous manufacturing processes, such as variations in the amount of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in the mixture due to fluctuations of the feeders or due to altered excipient batch qualities. Two types of controllers were investigated: a feedback control and a combination of feedback and feedforward control. Although both of those are common in the industry, determining the optimal parameter settings remains an issue. In this study, we developed a method to derive the control parameters based on process models in order to obtain optimal control for each filled product. Determined via rapid automated process development (RAPD), this method is an effective and fast way of determining control parameters. The method allowed us to optimize the weight control for three pharmaceutical excipients. By conducting experiments, we verified the feasibility of the proposed method and studied the dynamics of the controlled system. Our work provides important basic data on how capsule filler can be implemented into continuous manufacturing systems.
Frost reduction in mechanical balanced ventilation by efficient means of preheating cold supply air
(2019)
This study has focused on evaluating the financial potential of wastewater and geothermal heat recovery systems in a multi-family building. The recovered heat was used to improve the performance of mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system during the coldest days in central Sweden. The main issue, which was targeted with these solutions, was to reduce frost formation in the system and hence increase its thermal efficiency. By looking at the life cycle cost over a lifespan of 20 years, the observed systems were being evaluated economically. Furthermore, statistical analyses were carried-out to counter the uncertainty that comes with the calculation. It was found that the studied wastewater systems have a high possibility of generating savings in this period, while the one fed by geothermal energy is less likely to compensate for its high initial cost. All designed systems however, managed to reduce operational cost by 35-45% due to lower energy usage.
We propose a method for recognizing dynamic gestures using a 3D sensor. New aspects of the developed system include problem-adapted data conversion and compression as well as automatic detection of different variants of the same gesture via clustering with a suitable metric inspired by Jaccard metric. The combination of Hidden Markov Models and clustering leads to robust detection of different executions based on a small set of training data. We achieved an increase of 5% recognition rate compared to regular Hidden Markov Models. The system has been used for human-machine interaction and might serve as an assistive system in physiotherapy and neurological or orthopedic diagnosis.
Based on a survey among customers of seven German municipal utilities, we estimate hierarchical multiple regression models to identify consumer motivations for participating in P2P electricity trading and develop implications for marketing strategies for this currently relatively unknown product. Our results show a low importance of socio-demographics in explaining differences between consumer groups, but high influence of attitudes, knowledge and likelihood to purchase related products. The most valuable target groups for P2P electricity trading marketing strategies of municipal utilities first and foremost should aim at are innovators, especially prosumers. They are well-informed about and open minded concerning electricity sharing and highly environmentally aware. They ask for transparency and are willing to purchase related products. They are attracted by the ability to share generation and consumption and to a lesser extent by economic reasons. Our results indicate that the marketing efforts should to a special degree take peer effects into account, as they are found to wield great influence on general openness towards and purchase intention for P2P electricity products. Finally, municipal utilities should build on the high level of satisfaction and trust of consumers and use P2P electricity trading as measure to keep and win customers willing to change their supplier.
Contemporary public enterprises differ from their forebears. Today, they are more similar to private enterprises, receiving far more attention than previously, when privatization processes all over the world were in the spotlight. Furthermore, the broad research stream of entrepreneurship has so far neglected the consideration of public enterprises. To set a future research agenda, the author examines the dispersed literature using an integrative and organizing framework to identify major topics and research findings. This paper reviews articles that investigate the entrepreneurship in contemporary public enterprises. Despite the growing scholarly interest globally, this systematic literature review indicates there is no more than a loose connection between the literature streams of public entrepreneurship and corporate entrepreneurship. Specifically, the review shows that the multidimensional concept of entrepreneurial orientation has thus far been ignored, although autonomy plays a significant role in the literature review, namely in the context of the interference of the public owner. It also reveals other essential research gaps, such as the development of a modern theory of public enterprises. The linked research stream of public-sector corporate entrepreneurship offers a broad area of scholarly research and should encourage further investigation.
The complexity of supply chains increases, especially due to the geographical spread of supplier and customer networks. In the connected and automated supply chains of the industry 4.0, even more nodes are incorporated in supply chains. This paper discusses the possible improvement of process quality in the industry 4.0 through the different blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. We derived hypotheses from a literature review and asked German blockchain experts from the industry to validate and discuss the hypotheses. We find that the different blockchain technologies and consensus algorithms have different strength with regard to quality improvement. One central finding is that IOTA, developed especially for the IoT and deemed the ’next evolutionary step’ is scalable and hence may increase the process efficiency, but at the same time is more vulnerable than other blockchain implementations, which again may reduce the overall process quality.
A fully passive RFID temperature sensor SoC with an accuracy of ±0.4 ◦C (3σ) from 0 ◦C to 125 ◦C
(2019)
This paper presents a fully passive 13.56 -MHz RFID temperature sensor system-on-chip. Its power management unit operates over a large temperature range using a zero temperature coefficient bias source. On-chip temperature sensing is accomplished with low-voltage, low-power CMOS circuitry, and time-domain signal processing. Two readout commands have been defined to study supply noise sensitivity: 1) standard readout, where just a single set of data is transferred to the reader and 2) serial readout, where several sets of data are sent one after the other to the reader. With the standard readout command, the sensor suffers from interference from the RFID command packet and outputs interference as well, while the sensor outputs no interference with the serial readout command. Measurements show that sensor resolution with serial readout is improved by a factor of approximately 16 compared to standard readout. The chip was fabricated in a standard 0.35-μm CMOS technology and chip-on-board mounted to a tuned RFID transponder coil on an aluminum core FR4 PCB substrate. Real time wireless temperature sensing has been demonstrated with a commercial HF RFID reader. With a two-point calibration, the SoC achieves a 3σ sensing accuracy of ±0.4 ◦C from 0◦C to 125 ◦C.
This paper examines the deployment of Power to-X technologies in the US energy system through 2040. For this analysis, Power-to-X technologies have been added to an input database representing the US energy system as a single region, which is used in conjunction with an energy system optimization model called Tools for energy model optimization and analysis (Temoa). Detailed data for each individual technology, including water electrolysis, hydrogen compression and storage, chemical processing to synthetic natural gas (SNG) and methanol was collected and entered to the input database. Under a deep decarbonization scenario, Power-to-X is deployed beginning in 2035 under the assumption of no new nuclear power plants installed and a restriction on biodiesel production based on limited area for growing crops. The major portion of the hydrogen generated by electrolysis from excess PV- and wind-generated electricity goes into the production of methanol. This result suggests that Power-to-X is used to generate transport fuels in order to reduce CO2 emissions especially in this sector.
On-chip metallization, especially in modern integrated BCD technologies, is often subject to high current densities and pronounced temperature cycles due to heat dissipation from power switches like LDMOS transistors. This paper continues the work on a sensor concept where small sense lines are embedded in the metallization layers above the active area of a switching LDMOS transistor. The sensors show a significant resistance change that correlates with the number of power cycles. Furthermore, influences of sense line layer, geometry and the dissipated energy are shown. In this paper, the focus lies on a more detailed analysis of the observed change in sense line resistance.
Model-based hearing diagnosis based on wideband tympanometry measurements utilizing fuzzy arithmetic
(2019)
Today's audiometric methods for the diagnosis of middle ear disease are often based on a comparison of measurements with standard curves that represent the statistical range of normal hearing responses. Because of large inter-individual variances in the middle ear, especially in wideband tympanometry (WBT), specificity and quantitative evaluation are greatly restricted. A new model-based approach could transform today's predominantly qualitative hearing diganostics into a quantitative and tailored, patient-specific diagnosis, by evaluating WBT measurements with the aid of a middle-ear model. For this particular investigation, a finite element model of a human ear was used. It consisted of an acoustic ear canal and a tympanic cavity model, a middle-ear with detailed nonlinear models of the tympanic membrane and annular ligament, and a simplified inner-ear model. This model has made it possible to identify pathologies from measurements, by analyzing the parameters through senstivity studies and parameter clustering. Uncertainties due to the lack of knowledge, subjectivity in numerical implementation and model simplification are taken into account by the application of fuzzy arithmetic. The most confident parameter set can be determined by applying an inverse fuzzy method on the measurement data. The principle and the benefits of this model-based approach are illustrated by the example of a two-mass oscillator, and also by the simulation of the energy absorbance of an ear with malleus fixation, where the parameter changes that are introduced can be determined quantitatively through the system identification.
Usually battery chargers have two stages and DC charging current is considered to by necessary for a proper charging. To decrease the charger volume, a single stage LLC battery charger is investigated in this paper. PFC stage is eliminated, therefore no bulky capacitor is necessary any more, and battery is charged with a sinusoidal-like charging current. However, previous studies show that such a pulsating charging current has only minimal impact on battery life and efficiency. Design considerations of the resonant tank and optimal transformer design are presented. A 360W single stage LLC converter prototype for e-bike charger achieves a power factor of 0.98, efficiency of 0.93 and power density of 1,8kW/dm³.
Due to the lack of sophisticated component libraries for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), highly optimized MEMS sensors are currently designed using a polygon driven design flow. The advantage of this design flow is its accurate mechanical simulation, but it lacks a method for an efficient and accurate electrostatic analysis of parasitic effects of MEMS. In order to close this gap in the polygon-driven design flow, we present a customized electrostatic analysis flow for such MEMS devices. Our flow features a 2.5D fabrication-process simulation, which simulates the three typical MEMS fabrication steps (namely deposition of materials including topography, deep reactive-ion etching, and the release etch by vapor-phase etching) very fast and on an acceptable abstraction level. Our new 2.5D fabrication-process simulation can be combined with commercial field-solvers such as they are commonly used in the design of integrated circuits. The new process simulation enables a faster but nevertheless satisfactory analysis of the electrostatic parasitic effects, and hence simplifies the electrical optimization of MEMS.
Nowadays, the demand for a MEMS development/design kit (MDK) is even more in focus than ever before. In order to achieve a high quality and cost effectiveness in the development process for automotive and consumer applications, an advanced design flow for the MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems) element is urgently required. In this paper, such a development methodology and flow for parasitic extraction of active semiconductor devices is presented. The methodology considers geometrical extraction and links the electrically active pn junctions to SPICE standard library models and subsequently extracts the netlist. An example for a typical pressure sensor is presented and discussed. Finally, the results of the parasitic extraction are compared with fabricated devices in terms of accuracy and capability.
In this paper, we address the novel EDP (Expert Design Plan) principle for procedural design automation of analog integrated circuits, which captures the knowledge-based design strategy of human circuit designers in an executable script, making it reusable. We present the EDP Player, which enables the creation and execution of EDPs for arbitrary circuits in the Cadence® Virtuoso® Design Environment. The tool provides a generic version of an instruction set, called EDPL (EDPLanguage), enabling emulation of a typical manual analog sizing flow. To automate the design of a Miller Operational Amplifier and to create variants of a Smart Power IC, several EDPs were implemented using this tool. Employing these EDPs leads to a strong reduction of design time without compromising design quality or reliability.
A novel brushless excitation concept for synchronous machines with a rotating power converter is proposed in this paper. The concept does not need an auxiliary winding or any other modification to the machine structure apart from an inverter with a DC link capacitor and a controller on the rotor. The power required for the rotor excitation is provided by injecting harmonics into the stator winding. Thus, a voltage in the field coil is induced. The rotor inverter is controlled such that the alternating current charges the DC link capacitor. At the same time the inverter supplies the DC field current to the field coil. The excitation concept is first developed in theory, then presented using an analytical model and FEA, and lastly investigated with a prelimininary experimental setup.
In this work design rules for a novel brushless excitation system for externally excited synchronous machines are discussed. The concept replaces slip rings with a fullbridge active rectifier and a controller mounted on the rotor. An AC signal induced from the stator is used to charge the rotor DC link. The DC current for the rotor excitation is provided from this DC link source. Finite element analysis of an existing machine is used to analyze the practicability of the excitation system.
This paper discusses the optimal control problem for increasing the energy efficiency of induction machines in dynamic operation including field weakening regime. In an offline procedure optimal current and flux trajectories are determined such that the copper losses are minimized during transient operations. These trajectories are useful for a subsequent online implementation.
A digital twin - a replica of energy devices - was established in the computing environment of MATLAB and Simulink. It simulates continuously their operation and is time synchronized and connected to the cenral energy management and control system of a virtual power plant. The model can be used as a platform for testing device performance in various conditions, working schedules and new optimization options.
The Virtual Power Plant Neckar-Alb is a demonstration platform for operation, optimization and control of distributed energy resources, which are able to produce, store or consume electric energy. A heterogeneous set of distributed energy devices has been installed at the Campus of Reutlingen University by the Reutlingen Energy Centre (REZ) of the School of Engineering. The distributed energy devices have been combined to local microgrids and connected to an operative central power plant with additional participants. The demonstration platform serves students, researchers and industry experts for education and investigation of new technologies, devices and software.
This paper presents an approach for the implementation of a modular and scalable power electronics device for controlling electric drives in the field of electric vehicles using wide bandgap semiconductor devices. The main idea is to achieve the required output currents or voltages by connecting adequately designed hardware modules in parallel or in series. This particular design is based on the fact that the single modules generate a continuous and specified output voltage from a given dc voltage, e.g. an intermediate circuit or battery voltage. The main benefit is, that different current or voltage requirements can be satisfied based on a single module thus decreasing development and production costs. The current paper focuses on the connection in parallel of such modules. A control architecture is illustrated and a first proof of concept is given.
The field of additive manufacturing has experienced an incredible surge over the last few years. Affordable end-user printers, which open a wide variety of new production opportunities, have spread throughout the so called "maker community", while overblown reports about the possibilities on offer have whipped up a real hype. Although new ways of making products have now become available, what can actually be achieved often lags behind people's expectations. On the one hand, this is down to component quality and the materials being used, while on the other hand, most printers found in the end-user sphere use the FDM or DLP process, which significantly restricts the printing methods that can be utilized.

Aimed at the problem that the accuracy of face image classification in complex environment is not high, a network model F-Net suitable for aesthetic classification of face images is proposed. Based on LeNet-5, the model uses convolutional layers to extract facial image features in complex backgrounds, optimized parameters in the network model, and changes the number of convolutional layers and fully connected layer feature elements in the model. The experimental results show that the F-Net network model proposed in this paper has a face image classifation accuracy of 73% in complex environment background, which is better than other classical convolutional neural network classification models.

The coupling of the heat and power sector is required as supply and demand in the German electricity mix drift further and further apart with a high percentage of renewable energy. Heat pumps in combination with thermal energy storage systems can be a useful way to couple the heat and power sectors. This paper presents a hardware-in the-loop test bench for experimental investigation of optimized control strategies for heat pumps. 24-hour experiments are carried out to test whether the heat pump is able to serve optimized schedules generated by a MATLAB algorithm. The results show that the heat pump is capable of following the generated schedules, and the maximum deviation of the operational time between schedule and experiment is only 3%. Additionally, the system can serve the demand for space heating and DHW at any time.
Due to the large interindividual variances and the poor optical accessibility of the ear, the specificity of hearing diagnostics today is severely restricted to a certain clinical picture and quantitative assessment. Often only a yes or no decision is possible, which depends strongly on the subjective assessment of the ENT physician. A novel approach, in which objectively obtainable, non invasive audiometric measurements are evaluated using a numerical middle ear model, makes it possible to make the hidden middle ear properties visible and quantifiable. The central topic of this paper is a novel parameter identification algorithm that combines inverse fuzzy arithmetic with an artificial neural network in order to achieve a coherent diagnostic overall picture in the comparison of model and measurement. Its usage is shown at a pathological pattern called malleus fixation where the upper ligament of the malleus is pathologically stiffened.
Efficient and robust 3D object reconstruction based on monocular SLAM and CNN semantic segmentation
(2019)
Various applications implement slam technology, especially in the field of robot navigation. We show the advantage of slam technology for independent 3d object reconstruction. To receive a point cloud of every object of interest void of its environment, we leverage deep learning. We utilize recent cnn deep learning research for accurate semantic segmentation of objects. In this work, we propose two fusion methods for cnn-based semantic segmentation and slam for the 3d reconstruction of objects of interest in order to obtain a more robustness and efficiency. As a major novelty, we introduce a cnn-based masking to focus slam only on feature points belonging to every single object. Noisy, complex or even non-rigid features in the background are filtered out, improving the estimation of the camera pose and the 3d point cloud of each object. Our experiments are constrained to the reconstruction of industrial objects. We present an analysis of the accuracy and performance of each method and compare the two methods describing their pros and cons.
This paper presents the preliminary results of a setof research projects being developed at the distributed resources laboratory at the University of Reutlingen. The main aim of these projects is to couple distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) with distributed control of microgrids. Firstly, a DLT based solution for a local market platform has been developed. This enables end customers to participate in new local micro-energy-markets by providing them with a distributed, decentralized, transparent and secure Peer to Peer (P2P) payment system. Secondly, this solution has been integrated with an autonomous (agent-based) grid management. The integrated solution of both marked platform as well as agent based control has been implemented and tested in a real microgrid with different distributed components such as PV System, CHP and different kinds of controllable loads. This microgrid is located in the distributed energy resources laboratory at the University of Reutlingen. Thirdly, the resulting solution is being implemented as an easy to customize market solution by AC2SG Software Oy, a Finland based software company, developing solutions for the Indian market. In a next phase, the solution is going to be tested in real environment in off-grids systems in India.
Power loss measurement of power electronic components and overall systems is sometimes difficult by use of electrical quantities and in few applications even not possible. The calorimetric power loss measurement is an established method to identify the overall system losses with a suitable accuracy. This paper presents a novel method with an open chamber calorimeter under accurate air mass flow, air pressure, humidity measurement and temperature control. The benefits are the approximately halved measurement time compared to established systems and the possibility to control the chamber temperature. So it is possible to measure the power losses at different ambient temperatures.
The Dual Active Bridge (DAB) is a very promising topology for future power converters. However, careless operation can lead to a DC component in the transformer current. The problem is further exacerbated when the phase shift changes during operation. This work presents a study of DC bias effects on the DAB with special regard to transient effects introduced by sudden shifts in the output load. We present a simple yet effective approach to avoid DC bias entirely.
This study describes a non-contact measuring and parameter identification procedure designed to evaluate inhomogeneous stiffness and damping characteristics of the annular ligament in the physiological amplitude and frequency range without the application of large static external forces that can cause unnatural displacements of the stapes. To verify the procedure, measurements were first conducted on a steel beam. Then, measurements on an individual human cadaveric temporal bone sample were performed. The estimated results support the inhomogeneous stiffness and damping distribution of the annular ligament and are in a good agreement with the multiphoton microscopy results which show that the posterior-inferior corner of the stapes footplate is the stiffest region of the annular ligament. This method can potentially help to establish a correlation between stiffness and damping characteristics of the annular ligament and inertia properties of the stapes and, thus, help to reduce the number of independent parameters in the model-based hearing diagnosis.
It is expected that ongoing digitalisation will drive the merger between the manufacturing world and the internet world, possibly leading to a next industrial revolution, currently called “Industry 4.0”. The driving forces behind this development are new business opportunities and competition advantages arising from mass production customisation as well as rapid individual product development and manufacturing. Key factors of the development towards Industry 4.0 are discussed. Threats and opportunities arising from these developments for future production are discussed. Actual examples from real-time customized manufacturing of consumer products are given. As mechatronic systems and industrial robots are widely used in manufacturing and in particular in assembly, it is discussed how they can be connected to and used in digitalised industrial systems. Different examples of remote controlled systems are presented, like remote controlled KUKA robot for handling and quality control, PLC-controlled equipment, drive systems, FESTO handling system and others. The architecture of an assembly cell is presented, where industrial robots are set-up for batch-one production or can directly receive control / production information on-line and in real-time over the factory network. Methods for remote maintenance and monitoring of systems over the internet and production operator support over the internet are presented as well.

IC layout automation with self-organized wiring and arrangement of responsive modules (SWARM)
(2019)
Focused on automating analog IC layout, the multi-agent-system Self-organized Wir ing and Arrangement of Responsive Modules (SWARM) combines the powers of pro-cedural generators and algorithmic optimization into a novel bottom-up meets top-down flow of supervised layout module interaction. Provoking self-organization via the effect of emergence, examples show SWARM finding even optimal placement solutions and producing constraint-compliant layout blocks which fit into a specified zone.
Improved inductive feed-forward for fast turn-on of power semiconductors during hard switching
(2019)
A transformer is used to increase the gate voltage during turn-on, thus reducing the necessary bias voltage of the gate driver. Counteracting the voltage dependency of the gate capacitance of high-voltage power devices, faster transitions are possible. The additional transformer only slighly increases the over-voltage during turn-off.
Novel design for a coreless printed circuit board transformer realizing high bandwidth and coupling
(2019)
Rogowski coils offer galvanic isolation and can measure alternating currents with a high bandwidth. Coreless printed circuit board (PCB) transformers have been used as an alternative to limit the additional stray inductance if a Rogowski coil can not be attached to the circuit. A new PCB transformer layout is proposed to reduce cost, decrease additional stray inductance, increase the bandwidth of current measurements and simplify the integration into existing designs.
