We analyze economics PhDs’ collaborations in peer-reviewed journals from 1990 to 2014 and investigate such collaborations’ quality in relation to each co-author’s research quality, field and specialization. We find that a greater overlap between co-authors’ previous research fields is significantly related to a greater publication success of co-authors’ joint work and this is robust to alternative specifications. Co-authors that engage in a distant collaboration are significantly more likely to have a large research overlap, but this significance is lost when co-authors’ social networks are accounted for. High quality collaboration is more likely to emerge as a result of an interaction between specialists and generalists with overlapping fields of expertise. Regarding interactions across subfields of economics (interdisciplinarity), it is more likely conducted by co- authors who already have interdisciplinary portfolios, than by co-authors who are specialized or starred in different subfields.
In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 global objectives to promote economic, social and ecological development in all parts of the world. While the academic discussion on the contribution of companies to the Sustainable Development Goals has recently gained momentum, the role of business-to-business (B2B) partnerships in reaching the SDGs is underexplored, particularly when it comes to North-South relationships. With our research, we aim to fill this gap in the literature by investigating sales partnerships between German manufacturers and their distributors in African markets. Based on a qualitative analysis of 28 interviews with managers of German and African companies, we show that long-term partnerships and job creation, technology transfer, training as well as high standards are significant contributions of companies to achieve the SDGs. While several SDGs such as goals 4,6,13,16 and 17 are addressed by B2B partnership, we also discuss approaches on how the firms’ engagement could be further leveraged and expanded.
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has reinforced China’s business engagement in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). While previous international business research focused on the internationalization and investments of Chinese companies, this viewpoint uncovers how both local African and international non-Chinese Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) may benefit from and participate in the BRI. A focus is laid on the infrastructure sector accounting for the highest investments since the inception of the BRI in 2013. In a conceptual way, the motives of SMEs to participate in infrastructure project business in the context of the BRI are explored. Investigating the challenges of two large transport infrastructure projects, the business potentials for SMEs become visible. It is argued that SMEs find business potentials particularly as investors, sub-contractors and project management experts in the BRI in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The general conclusion of climate change studies is the necessity of eliminating net CO2 emissions in general and from the electric power systems in particular by 2050. The share of renewable energy is increasing worldwide, but due to the intermittent nature of wind and solar power, a lack of system flexibility is already hampering the further integration of renewable energy in some countries. In this study, we analyze if and how combinations of carbon pricing and power-to-gas (PtG) generation in the form of green power-to-hydrogen followed by methanation (which we refer to as PtG throughout) using captured CO2 emissions can provide transitions to deep decarbonization of energy systems. To this end, we focus on the economics of deep decarbonization of the European electricity system with the help of an energy system model. In different scenario analyses, we find that a CO2 price of 160 €/t (by 2050) is on its own not sufficient to decarbonize the electricity sector, but that a CO2 price path of 125 (by 2040) up to 160 €/t (by 2050), combined with PtG technologies, can lead to an economically feasible decarbonization of the European electricity system by 2050. These results are robust to higher than anticipated PtG costs.
Saving energy and road safety became important in the last decades, hence several driving assistant systems were developed that help to improve the driving behaviour. However, these driving systems cover the area of either energy-efficiency or safety. Furthermore, they do not consider the reaction of the driver to a shown recommendation and the driver stress level. In this paper, the decision process of showing a recommendation to the driver in an energy-efficient and safety relevant driving system is presented. The decision process considers the driver's reaction to a shown recommendation and the driver stress in order to increase the user acceptance and the road safety. The results of the evaluation showed that the driving system was able to show recommendations when needed, while suppressing recommendations when the driver ignored a recommendation repeatedly or when the driver was in stress.
Palladium-doped silica materials with SiCH3 groups were fabricated by sol-gel method under various calcination atmospheres and membranes were made thereof by coating process. The results showed that air atmosphere can lead to the partial oxidation of metallic Pd0 to PdO while N2 and H2 atmospheres can effectively prevent metallic Pd0 from being oxidized. H2 atmosphere is proved to be a more prominent way to slow down the decomposition of organic SiCH3 group than N2 and air atmospheres. The surface area, micropore volume and porosity of palladium-doped silica membrane material calcined in H2 atmosphere are much higher than those calcined in N2 atmosphere. Compared with N2 atmosphere, the palladium-doped silica membranes calcined in H2 atmosphere showed higher H2 permeability and H2/CO2 selectivity before and after the steam exposure. The apparent activation energy of H2 permeation through the palladium-doped silica membrane calcined under H2 atmosphere (2.51 ± 0.05 kJ/mol) was slightly lower than that calcined under N2 atmosphere (2.84 ± 0.04 kJ/mol). Calcination atmosphere plays some role in membrane performance, which has greater influence on the permeance than on the gas permselectivity. Calcination under H2 atmosphere is well conducive to improve the gas permeance and H2 permselectivity of palladium-doped silica membrane.
Rats are commonly used in medical research as they enable a high grade of standardization. The exhalome of ventilated rats has not as yet been investigated using an ion mobility spectrometer coupled with a multi-capillary column (MCC-IMS). As a first step, a rat model has to be established to measure potential biomarkers in the exhale with long-term settings, allowing constant and continuous analysis of exhaled air in time series. Therefore, eight animals were anaesthetized, prepared and ventilated for 1 h. A total of 73 peaks were directly detected with the IMS chromatogram. Thirty five of them were assigned to the ventilator system and 38 to the animals. Peak intensity varied within three measurements. The intensity of analytes of individual rats varied by a factor of up to 18. This new model will also enable continuous measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from rat's breath in long-term experiments. It is hoped that, in the future, variability and progression of VOCs can be monitored in different models of diseases using this set-up.
Though bioprinting is a forward-looking approach in bone tissue engineering, the development of bioinks which are on the one hand processable with the chosen printing technique, and on the other hand possess the relevant mechanical as well as osteoconductive features remains a challenge. In the present study, polymer solutions based on methacrylated gelatin and methacrylated hyaluronic acid modified with hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles (5 wt%) were prepared. Encapsulation of primary human adipose derived stem cells in the HAp-containing gels and culture for 28 d resulted in a storage moduli significantly increased to 126% ± 9.6% compared to the value on day 1 by the sole influence of the HAp. Additional use of osteogenic media components resulted in an increase of storage module up to 199% ± 27.8%. Similarly, the loss moduli was increased to 370% ± 122.1% under the influence of osteogenic media components and HAp. Those changes in rheological material characteristics indicate a distinct change in elastic and viscous hydrogel properties, and are attributed to extensive matrix production in the hydrogels by the encapsulated cells, what could also be proven by staining of bone matrix components like collagen I, fibronectin, alkaline phosphatase and osteopontin. When using the cell-laden polymer solutions as bioinks to build up relevant geometries, the ink showed excellent printability and the printed grid structure's integrity remained intact over a culture time of 28 d. Again, an intense matrix formation as well as upregulation of osteogenic markers by the encapsulated cells could be shown. In conclusion, we demonstrated that our HAp-containing bioinks and hydrogels on basis of methacrylated gelatin and hyaluronic acid are on the one hand highly suitable for the build up of relevant three-dimensional geometries with microextrusion bioprinting, and on the other hand exhibit a significant positive effect on bone matrix development and remodeling in the hydrogels, as indicated by rheological measurements and staining of bone components. This makes the developed composite hydrogels an excellent material for bone bioprinting approaches.
Background aims: In vitro engineered adipose tissue is in great demand to treat lost or damaged soft tissue or to screen for new drugs, among other applications. However, today most attempts depend on the use of animal-derived sera. To pave the way for the application of adipose tissue-engineered
products in clinical trials or as reliable and robust in vitro test systems, sera should be completely excluded from the production process. In this study, we aimed to develop an in vitro adipose tissue model in the absence of sera and maintain its function long-term.
Methods: Human adipose tissue-derived stem cells were expanded and characterized in a xeno- and serum-free environment. Adipogenic differentiation was induced using a completely defined medium. Developed adipocytes were maintained in a completely defined maturation medium for additional 28 days. In addition to cell-viability and adherence, adipocyte-specific markers such as perilipin A expression of leptin release were evaluated.
Results: The defined differentiation medium enhanced cell adherence and lipid
accumulation at a significant level compared with the corresponding negative control. The defined maturation medium also significantly supported cell adherence and functional adipocyte maturation during the long-term culture period.
Conclusions: The process described here enables functional adipocyte generation and maintenance without the addition fo unknown or unimal-derived constituents, achieving an important milestone in the introduction of adipose tissue engineered products into clinical trials or in vitro screening.
The level of automation in intralogistics has steadily increased over recent years. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), however, the associated digital change is a major challenge. Since most SMEs are facing increasing sales volumes (e.g. due to e-commerce and good overall economy) in combination with decreasing lot sizes due to the market demand for individualized products, SMEs have to find innovative solutions to cope with these challenges in production as well as in logistics. Innovative technologies, like 3D printing technologies for the production for small lot sizes and future-oriented intralogistics technologies can serve as enablers in logistics to realize flexible logistic processes for increasing market requiremments. Considering that, this paper examines innovative and future-oriented technologies for intralogistics such as smart containers, driverless forklift systems, data glasses, smart shelves and smart pallets regarding their potential for SMEs. This explorative research paper shows that digital technologies are already suitable and available for SMEs.However, challenges are still seen in areas like the identification and digitalization potential and the financing of these new projects. The primary reason escpecially for SMEs for this is that they have to make investments based on an economically feasible payback period and less based on prestigious reasons like digitalization flagship projecs done by large corporations. In addition, the identification of feasible starting points for digitalization within intralogistic systems embedded in specific factory processes is a major challenge not only for SMEs.
This paper looks at the case of Reutlingen University (Hochschule Reutlingen), a university with a reputation for international student mobility. It examines how the university strives to fulfil its mandate to prepare ‘industry-ready’ graduates for the global industry by providing an international practice-oriented education. The key focus is on its efforts to establish credit-bearing internship programmes for international students, an area where the institution has ramped up its activities in recent years. Internships for international students is understood to encompass both domestic internships for international students (exchange and degree-seeking students) as well as internships abroad for home-grown degree-seeking students. The paper presents models and approaches that seek to ensure the quality of the international internship experience. It discusses challenges that the university has encountered on the way and makes suggestions about how to create internship opportunities against the backdrop of competing demands and expectations.
The success of an autonomous robotic system is influenced by several not easily identifiable interdependent factors. This paper is set to lay the foundation of an integrated approach in order to examine all the parameters and understand their contribution to success. After introducing the problem, two autonomous systems for the process of unloading of containers are presented. Then a recently developed method for modelling and interpreting all the parameters, the STIC analysis, are introduced. The preliminary results of applying such a methodology to a first study case is shortly presented. Future research is in the end recommended in order to prove that this methodology is the only way to overcome barriers to the investment in autonomous systems in the logistics sector.
Functionalised particles are highly requested in materials research, as they can be used as vital components in many advanced applications such as smart materials, functional coatings, drug carrier systems or adsorption materials. In this study, furan-functionalised melamine-formaldehyde (MF) particles were successfully prepared for the first time using an organic sol-gel process. Commercially available 2-Aminomethylfuran (AMF) and 2-Aminomethyl-5-methylfuran (AMMF) were used as modifying agents. In the isolated polymer particles, a melamine (M) to modifying agent ratio of M:AMF mol/mol 2.04:1 and M:AMMF ratio of mol/mol 1.25:1 was used. The obtained particles were isolated in various centrifugation and re-dispersion cycles and analysed using ATR-FT-IR, Raman and solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy, TGA, SEM and DSC measurements. Upon functionalisation the size of the MF particles increased (MF 1.59 µm, 27% CV (coefficient of variation); MF-AMF 2.56 µm, 25% CV; MF-AMMF 2.20 µm, 35% CV). DSC measurements showed that another type of exothermic residual reactivity besides condensation-based curing takes place with the furan-modified particles that is not related to the liberation of volatile compounds. The newly obtained particles are able to undergo Diels-Alder reactions with maleimide groups. The characteristic IR and Raman absorbance bands of the reaction products after the particles were reacted with 4,4′-Diphenylmethanebismaleimide reagent confirm the formation of a Diels-Alder adduct.
The self-healing effect of melamine-based surfaces, triggered by temperature, was investigated. The temperature triggered reversible healing chemistry, on which the self-healing effect is based, was the Diels-Alder (DA) reaction between furan and malemeide groups. Melamine-furan containing building blocks were connected by multi-functional maleimide crosslinker via a Diels-Alder (DA) reaction to giva a DA adduct. The DA adduct was then reacted with formaldehyde to form a network by conventional condensation reaction of melamine amino groups with formaldehyde. The obtained resin was characterised and used for the impregnation of paper. Impregnated papers and neat resin werde used to perform scratch-healing tests and mechanical analysis of the novel coating system.
Homogeneous and monodispersed furan functionalised melamine-formaldehyde particles were produced. As a precursor, 2-chloro-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine (Mel) was selectively substituted with 2-aminomethyl furan (Fu) units in a convenient one step reaction. The pure reaction product Fu-Mel, which was used without further purification, was reacted with formaldehyde by conventional sol-gel condensation in aqueous medium to yield chemically homogenous, spherically shaped and monodispersed particles. The particles were analysed using ATR-FT-IR, Raman, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, TGA, SEM and DSC measurements. The reactivity of the furan groups located at the particle surface was studied by performing a thermoreversible Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction with bis-maleimide coupling agents. The formed networks showed thermoreversible behaviour, which was characterised by dynamic IR and DSC measurements.
Context
In a world of high dynamics and uncertainties, it is almost impossible to have a long-term prediction of which products, services, or features will satisfy the needs of the customer. To counter this situation, the conduction of Continuous Improvement or Design Thinking for product discovery are common approaches. A major constraint in conducting product discovery activities is the high effort to discover and validate features and requirements. In addition, companies struggle to integrate product discovery activities into their agile processes and iterations.
Objective
This paper aims at suggests a supportive tool, the “Discovery Effort Worthiness (DEW) Index”, for product owners and agile teams to determine a suitable amount of effort that should be spent on Design Thinking activities. To operationalize DEW, proposals for practitioners are presented that can be used to integrate product discovery into product development and delivery.
Method
A case study was conducted for the development of the DEW index. In addition, we conducted an expert workshop to develop proposals for the integration of product discovery activities into the product development and delivery process.
Results
First, we present the "Discovery Effort Worthiness Index" in form of a formula. Second, we identified requirements that must be fulfilled for systematic integration of product discovery activities into product development and delivery. Third, we derived from the requirements proposals for the integration of product discovery activities with a company's product development and delivery.
Conclusion
The developed "Discovery Effort Worthiness Index" provides a tool for companies and their product owners to determine how much effort they should spend on Design Thinking methods to discover and validate requirements. Integrating product discovery with product development and delivery should ensure that the results of product discovery are incorporated into product development. This aims to systematically analyze product risks to increase the chance of product success.
Coupling electricity and heat sector is one of the most necessary actions for the successful energy transition. Efficient electrification for space heating and domestic hot water generation is needed for buildings, which are not connected to any district heating network, as distributed heating demand momentarily is largely met by fossil fuels. Hence, hybrid energy systems will play a pivotal role for the energy transition in buildings. Heat pumps running on PV-electricity is one of the most widely discussed combination for this purpose. In this paper, a heuristic optimization method for the optimal operation of a heat pump driven by the objective for maximum onsite PV electricity utilization is presented. In this context, the thermal flexibility of the building and a thermal energy storage (TES) for generation of domestic hot water (DHW) are activated in order to shift the operation of the heat pump to times of PV-generation. Yearly simulations for a system consisting of heat pump, PV modules, building with floor heating installation and TES for DHW generation are carried out. Variation parameters for the simulation include room temperature amplitude (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 K) based on mean room temperature (21 °C), PV-capacity (4, 6, 8 and 10 kW) and type of heat pump (ground source and air source type). The yearly energy balances show that buildings offer significant thermal storage capacity avoiding an additional, large TES for space heating fulfillment and improving the share of onsite PV electricity utilization. With introduction of a battery, which has been analyzed as well for different sizes (1.9, 4.8, 7.7 and 10.6 kWh), the share of onsite PVelectricity utilization can even be improved. However, thermal flexibility supplemented by the varying room temperature amplitude for a bigger battery does not improve the share of onsite PV-electricity utilization. Nevertheless, even with a battery not more than 50% of the electrical load including operation of the heat pump can be covered by PV-electricity for the specific system under investigation. This is noteworthy on the one hand, since it indicates that a hybrid heating system consisting of heat pump and PV cannot solely cover the heat demand of residential buildings. One the other hand, this emphasizes the necessity to include further renewable sources like wind power, in order to draw the complete picture. This, however, is beyond the scope of this paper, which mainly focuses on introduction and verification of the novel control method with regard to a practical building.
Impact of phenolic resin preparation on its properties and its penetration behavior in Kraft paper
(2018)
The core of decorative laminates is generally made of stacked Kraft paper sheets impregnated with a phenolic resin. As the impregnation process in industry is relatively fast, new methods need to be developed to characterize it for different paper-resin systems. Several phenolic resins were synthesized with the same Phenol:Formaldehyde ratio of 1:1.8 and characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) as well as Size-Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). In addition, their viscosities and surface tensions when diluted in methanol to 45% of solid content were measured. The capacity of each resin to penetrate a Kraft paper sheet was characterized using a new method, which measures the conductivities induced by the liquid resin crossing the paper substrate. With this method, crossing times could be measured with a good accuracy. Surprisingly, the results showed that the penetration time of the resin samples is not correlated to the viscosity values, but rather to the surface tension characteristics and the chemical characteristics of paper. Furthermore, some resins had a higher swelling effect on the fibers that delayed the crossing of the liquid through the paper.
Computers are increasingly used in teams in various contexts, for example in negotiations. Especially when using computer-support for decision making processes, it is an important question whether active collaboration within the team - for example via audio-conference - has additional benefits beyond the supply of full task-relevant information via computer. In team negotiations, team representatives are only able to represent the whole team, if diverse preferences of the team members are aligned prior to the negotiation. In an experimental study with 150 participants, we provided team members with the complete information about each other's preferences during an either collaboratively (computer-mediated) or seperately conducted computer-supported negotiation preparation and subsequently asked them for their priorities as representatives of the team. Our results showed that providing complete task-relevant information via computer is insufficient to compensate for the absence of active collaboration within the team.
Businesses need to cope with myriad challenges including increasingly competitive markets and rapid developments in digital technology. The overall aim of the research described in this paper is to generate fresh insights into the impacts of digitalisation on the design and management of global supply chains. It focuses on understanding the current adoption rate of new technologies in global supply chains, identifying perceived opportunities and challenges and clarifying the critical factors driving (and inhibiting) their deployment. The authors administered an online survey with a global sample of respondents from various supply chain functions, resulting in a sample of 142 responses. Significant differences emerged in adoption patterns between companies of different sizes. Moreover, the study pointed to a widening gap (or a ‘digital divide’) between leaders and laggards in terms of technology adoption. Perceived benefits and challenges also differ notably between companies of varying sizes. Adoption patterns are very diverse across specific technologies. The results further suggest that there is a significant correlation between adoption of digital technologies and different dimensions of company performance.
Annotations of subject IDs in images are very important as ground truth for face recognition applications and news retrieval systems. Face naming is becoming a significant research topic in news image indexing applications. By exploiting the uniqueness of name, face naming is transformed to the problem of multiple instance learning (MIL) with exclusive constraint, namely the eMIL problem. First, the positive bags and the negative bags are automatically annotated by a hybrid recurrent convolutional neural network and a distributed affinity propagation cluster. Next, positive instance selection and updating are used to reduce the influence of false-positive bag and to improve the performance. Finally, max exclusive density and iterative Max-ED algorithms are proposed to solve the eMIL problem. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithms achieve a significant improvement over other algorithms.
Kleider machen Drummer
(2018)
We report an investigation into the distribution of copper oxidation states in oxide films formed on the surfaces of technical copper. The oxide films were grown by thermal annealing at ambient conditions and studied using Auger depth profiling and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Both Auger and UV–Vis data were evaluated applying multivariate curve resolution (MCR). Both experimental techniques revealed that the growth of Cu2O dominates the initial ca. 40 nm of oxide films grown at 175 °C, while further oxide growth is dominated by CuO formation. The largely coincident results from both experimental approaches demonstrates the huge benefit of the application of UV–Vis spectroscopy in combination with MCR analysis, which provides access to information on chemical state distributions without the need for destructive sample analysis. Both approaches are discussed in detail.
The fluorescence of monomeric photosystem II core complexes (mPSIIcc) of the cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus, originating from redissolved crystals, is investigated by using single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS) at 1.6 K. The emission spectra of individual mPSIIcc are dominated by sharp zero-phonon lines, showing the existence of different emitters compatible with the F685, F689, and F695 bands reported formerly. The intensity of F695 is reduced in single mPSIIcc as compared to single PSIIcc-dimers (dPSIIcc). Crystal structures show that one of the β-carotene (β-Car) cofactors located at the monomer–monomer interface in dPSIIcc is missing in mPSIIcc. This β-Car in dPSIIcc is in van der Waals distance to chlorophyll (Chl) 17 in the CP47 subunit. We suggest that this Chl contributes to the F695 emitter. A loss of β-Car cofactors in mPSIIcc preparations will lead to an increased lifetime of the triplet state of Chl 17, which can explain the reduced singlet emission of F695 as observed in SMS.
Participation in fast fashion brands’ clothes recycling plans in an omnichannel retail environment
(2020)
The rise of the fast fashion industry allows more and more people to participate in fashion consumption, but goes along with negative consequences on the environment. To reduce wastage, fast fashion retailers have begun to offer used clothes recycling plans to which customers can submit clothes they no longer wear. Since these recycling plans have mainly been operated in offline stores so far, the rise of omnichannel retailing poses new challenges on retailers with regard to organizing the plan and motivating consumers to participate. On a sample of N=370 Chinese fast fashion consumers, this paper investigates, which factors determine consumers’ willingness to participate in fast fashion brands’ used clothes recycling plans in an omnichannel retailing environment. It finds that consumers’ clothes recycling intention is determined by individual predispositions (environmental attitude, impulsive consumption), as well as by organizational arrangements (channel integration quality), as well as by the outcomes of their interaction (consumer satisfaction, brand identification). Conclusions are drawn, implications for omnichannel fast fashion retailing practice, as well as for further research, derived, and limitations discussed.
Nur was genau?
Drei Stufen geben Sicherheit

The influence of trust on the adherence to investment recommendations in the context of robo-advisors is under-researched. This relationship needs to be better understood because robo-advice lacks a critical element of trust: human interaction. Theory suggests that ability, integrity, and benevolence are key factors in building trust in human advisors. Using an experimental study design, our research examines the relationship between a robo-advisor's trust attributes and the acceptance of its investment advice. The results show that trust in a robo-advisor increases the propensity to follow its recommendations. While ability and integrity are significant, benevolence is not. The study contributes to the research on technology acceptance, trust, and the adoption of technology-based recommendations by improving the understanding of the relationship between trust and the acceptance of automated investment recommendations.
Pharmaceutical companies are among the top investors into research and development (R&D) globally, as product innovation is still the main growth driver for the industry and because the related complexities necessitate enormous R&D investments. The market demand for new medicines to be more efficacious or to provide better safety than existing drugs and the regulatory need to prove superiority in clinical trials are reasons why drug R&D is increasingly expensive and pharmaceutical companies need to manage extraordinarily high costs per approved new compound.
We investigated the state of artificial intelligence (AI) in pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) and outline here a risk and reward perspective regarding digital R&D. Given the novelty of the research area, a combined qualitative and quantitative research method was chosen, including the analysis of annual company reports, investor relations information, patent applications, and scientific publications of 21 pharmaceutical companies for the years 2014 to 2019. As a result, we can confirm that the industry is in an ‘early mature’ phase of using AI in R&D. Furthermore, we can demonstrate that, despite the efforts that need to be managed, recent developments in the industry indicate that it is worthwhile to invest to become a ‘digital pharma player’.
Today, virtualizing pharma R&D is increasingly related with data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), technologies that have been developed by software companies outside the healthcare sector. The process of virtualizing pharma R&D is closely related to the technological advancements that result in the generation of large data sets ranging from genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, medical imaging, IoT wearables and large clinical trials, making it necessary for pharma companies to find new ways to store and ultimately analyze information. As a consequence, pharma companies are experimenting with AI in R&D ranging from in-silico drug design to clinical trail participants identification or dosage error reduction.
Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, such as machine learning or deep learning, have been predicted to highly impact future organizations and radically change the way how projects are managed. The Project Management Institute (PMI), the network of around 1.1 million certified project managers, ranked AI as one of the top three disruptors of their profession. In an own study on the effect of AI, 37% of the project management processes can be executed by machine learning and other AI technologies. In addition, Gartner recently postulated that 80% of the work of today's project managers may be eliminated by AI in 2030.
This editorial aims to outline today's project and portfolio management in context of pharmaceutical research and development (R&D), followed by an AI-vision and a more tangible mission, and illustrate what the consequences of an AI-enabled project and portfolio management could be for pharmaceutical R&D.

A new class of information system architecture, decision-oriented service systems, is spreading more and more. Decision-oriented service systems provide services that support decisions in business processes and products based on the capabilities of cloud-computing environments. To pave the way for the creation of design methods of business processes and products based on decision-oriented service systems, this article introduces a capability-oriented approach. Starting from technological capabilities, more abstract operational and dynamic capabilities are created. The framework created is based on an integrated conceptualization of decision-oriented service systems that allows capturing synergetic effects. By creating the framework, the gap between the technological capabilities of technologies and the strategic goals of enterprises shall be narrowed.

For the widespread establishment of a circular economy, the acceptance of used products among consumers is a prerequisite. This paper investigates the customer experience of product service systems related to used products (PSSuP), such as renting, remanufacturing, and second-hand models, and aims to point out the offering characteristics that effect customer response and customer engagement. This study was conducted by means of a content analysis-based literature review of 69 empirical PSSuP studies. A frequency analysis of the categories that determine customer experience creation was conducted, as well as a contingency analysis to reveal the interrelationship between these categories. On this basis, the different PSSuP types were compared, and four strategic orientations of customer experience creation in PSSuP are pointed out: price, confidence, convenience, and delight orientation. For each of these strategic orientations, supportive PSSuP offering characteristics are specified. Building on the findings of this study, theoretical and managerial implications for product–service systems marketing are pointed out, and the need for research on the role of information and communication technology as an enabler of customer experience creation in PSSuP is highlighted.
The limited focus on particular research designs, data analysis methods, and research objects frequently characterise customer research projects. However, standard practice regarding researching certain phenomena is not always correct, and, in many cases, could provide misleading results. In this paper, we call for a more holistic approach to customer research, which considers the entire research design and data analysis toolbox, while also recognising the importance of consumer groups other than costumers. At the same time, we call for using simple data analysis methods, which often suffice to show relevant effects, instead of overemphasising method complexity as is often the case in top-tier journals. Based on our discussion, we offer researchers and practitioners concrete recommendations for advancing their research design and data analyses.
Current clinical practice is often unable to identify the causes of conductive hearing loss in the middle ear with sufficient certainty without exploratory surgery. Besides the large uncertainties due to interindividual variances, only partially understood cause–effect principles are a major reason for the hesitant use of objective methods such as wideband tympanometry in diagnosis, despite their high sensitivity to pathological changes. For a better understanding of objective metrics of the middle ear, this study presents a model that can be used to reproduce characteristic changes in metrics of the middle ear by altering local physical model parameters linked to the anatomical causes of a pathology. A finite-element model is, therefore, fitted with an adaptive parameter identification algorithm to results of a temporal bone study with stepwise and systematically prepared pathologies. The fitted model is able to reproduce well the measured quantities reflectance, impedance, umbo and stapes transfer function for normal ears and ears with otosclerosis, malleus fixation, and disarticulation. In addition to a good representation of the characteristic influences of the pathologies in the measured quantities, a clear assignment of identified model parameters and pathologies consistent with previous studies is achieved. The identification results highlight the importance of the local stiffness and damping values in the middle ear for correct mapping of pathological characteristics and address the challenges of limited measurement data and wide parameter ranges from the literature. The great sensitivity of the model with respect to pathologies indicates a high potential for application in model-based diagnosis.

Successful digital offerings are created at the intersection of what technologies can deliver and what customers want and will pay for. That point of intersection, however, has proved to be elusive. To find it, companies must experiment repeatedly, cocreate with customers, and assemble cross-functional development teams - and the insights gleaned along the way must be shared internally.
In this article, we discuss how several of the nearly 200 companies we've studied have built and exercised these capabilities. We also take a close look at how one company, Schneider Electric, is using them to acquire and share customer insights.
Herein, biochar from biomass residues is demonstrated as active materials for the catalytic cracking of waste motor oil into diesel-like fuels. Above all, alkali-treated rice husk biochar showed great activity with a 250% increase in the kinetic constant compared to the thermal cracking. It also showed better activity than synthetic materials, as previously reported. Moreover, much lower activation energy (185.77 to 293.48 kJ/mol) for the cracking process was also obtained. According to materials characterization, the catalytic activity was more related to the nature of the biochar’s surface than its specific surface area. Finally, liquid products complied with all the physical properties defined by international standards for diesel-like fuels, with the presence of hydrocarbons chains between C10 - C27 similar to the ones obtained in commercial diesel.

On-chip metallization, especially in modern integrated BCD technologies, is often subject to high current densities and pronounced temperature cycles due to heat dissipation from power switches like LDMOS transistors. This paper continues the work on a sensor concept where small sense lines are embedded in the metallization layers above the active area of a switching LDMOS transistor. The sensors show a significant resistance change that correlates with the number of power cycles. Furthermore, influences of sense line layer, geometry and the dissipated energy are shown. In this paper, the focus lies on a more detailed analysis of the observed change in sense line resistance.

Soft thermoplastic polysiloxane-urea-elastomers (PSUs) were prepared for the application as a biomaterial to replace the human natural lens after cataract surgery. PSUs were synthesized from amino-terminated polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS), 4,4′-Methylenebis(cyclohexylisocyanate) (H12MDI) and 1,3–Bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,1,3,3–tetramethyldisiloxane (APTMDS) by a two-step polyaddition route. Such a material has to be highly transparent and must exhibit a low Young’s Modulus and excellent dimensional stability. Polydimethylsiloxanes in the range of 3000–33,000 g·mol−1 were therefore prepared by ring-chain-equilibration of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and APTMDS in order to study the influence of the soft segment molecular weight on the mechanical properties and the transparency of the PSU-elastomers. 2,4,6,8-Tetramethyl-2,4,6,8-tetraphenylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4Me,Ph) was co-polymerized with D4 in order to adjust the refractive index of the polydimethyl-methyl-phenyl-siloxane-copolymers to a value equivalent to a young human natural lens. Very elastic PSUs with Elongation at Break values higher than 700% were prepared. PSU-elastomers, synthesized from PDMS of molecular weights up to 18,000 g·mol−1, showed transmittance values of over 90% within the visible spectrum range. The soft segment refractive index was increased through the incorporation of 14 mol % of methyl-phenyl-siloxane from 1.4011 to 1.4346 (37 °C). Young’s Moduli of PSU-elastomers were around 1 MPa and lower at PDMS molecular weights up to 15,000 g·mol−1. 10-cycle hysteresis measurements were applied to evaluate the mechanical stability of the PSUs at repeated stress. Hysteresis values at 100% strain decreased from 32 to 2% (10th cycle) with increasing PDMS molecular weight. Furthermore, hysteresis at 5% strain was only detected in PSU-elastomers with low PDMS molecular weights. Finally, preliminary results of in vitro cytotoxicity tests on a PSU-elastomer showed no toxic effects on HaCaT-cells.
Papermaking waste liquid (black liquor) is a serious source of water pollution worldwide. The subsequent treatment of it is very difficult cause it contains a large amount of lignin, inorganic salts, organic matter, and pigments, which lead to serious water pollution. Lignin is the main by-product of the paper industry and is the only natural aromatic recyclable resource. Its effective utilization rate is currently less than 3%. Therefore, how to effectively recycle lignin in papermaking waste liquid and further synthesize industrialized products is of great significance to the sustainable development and environmental protection. Besides, based on the shortage of petroleum resources in recent years, the application of biomass resources instead of petroleum resources in the industry is also an important issue. In this article, we explored the best optimal conditions for the oxypropylation and esterification of lignin, and prepared bio-bitumen based on modified lignin, and then applied it to the waterproof coating sheets. FTIR and mechanical properties (softening point, low-temperature flexibility, peel strength, etc.) were tested on the obtained waterproof coating sheets. The results show that the addition of modified lignin reduced the softening point and peel strength of the coating sheets. Interestingly, both oxypropylated lignin (OL) and esterified lignin (OEL) were very beneficial to resist the decrease in peel strength during the aging process, showing a significant improvement in the performance of the coating sheets after aging compared to the control.

Mastering of complex systems and interfaces, idea and innovation management as well as virtually integrated product and process planning are essential competences to be developed and fostered to cope with the changing role of the workforce in a future industry 4.0 work system. Learning factories, like the Logistics Learning Factory at Reutlingen University, which are equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, offer a high potential to decidedly address these competences.
Film formation of self synthesized Polymer EPM–g–VTMDS (ethylene–propylene rubber, EPM, grafted with vinyltetramethyldisiloxane, VTMDS) was studied regarding bonding to adhesion promoter vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) on oxidized 18/10 chromium/nickel–steel (V2A) stainless steel surfaces. Polymer films of different mixed solutions including commercial siloxane and silicone, dimethyl, vinyl group terminated crosslinker (HANSA SFA 42100, CAS# 68083-19-2, 0.35 mmol Vinyl/g) and platinum, 1,3-diethenyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane complex Karstedt's catalyst (ALPA–KAT 1, CAS# 68478-92-2) were spin coated on V2A stainless steel surfaces with adsorbed VTMS thin layers in order to analyze film formation of EPM–g–VTMDS at early stages. Surface topography and chemical bonding of the high performance polymers on different oxidized V2A surfaces were investigated with X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). AFM and SEM as well as XPS results indicated that the formation of the polymer film proceeds via growth of polymer islands. Chemical signatures of the essential polymer contributions, linker and polymer backbones, could be identified using XPS core level peak shape analysis and also SERS. The appearance of signals which are related to Si–O–Si can be seen as a clear indication of lateral crosslinking and silica network formation in the films on the V2A surface.
Ambush marketing in sports
(2014)
A sports event organizer sells exclusive marketing rights for his event to official sponsors, who, in return, acquire exclusive options to utilize the event for their own advertising purposes. Ambush marketing is the practice by companies of using their own marketing, particularly marketing communications activities, to create an impression of an association with the event to the event audience, although the companies in question have no legal or only underprivileged or non-exclusive marketing rights for this event sponsored by third parties. So, the objective of ambush marketing is to benefit from the success of sports sponsorship without having the duties of an official sponsor.
It is fine line between creative marketing communication and infringing on sponsorship rights. From the perspective of the event organizers and sports sponsors ambush marketing represents an understandable threat, while from the perspective of the ambushers it offers the opportunity to reach the target audience in an attractive environment and at affordable cost. The paper defines and structures the phenomenon of ambush marketing and analyses the impacts of ambush marketing in sports. The results of an empirical study on the effects of ambush marketing in the frame of the FIFA Soccer World cup are presented and discussed.

New approaches to respiratory assist: bioengineering an ambulatory, miniaturized bioartificial lung
(2019)
Although state-of-the-art treatments of respiratory failure clearly have made some progress in terms of survival in patients suffering from severe respiratory system disorders, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), they failed to significantly improve the quality of life in patients with acute or chronic lung failure, including severe acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or ARDS as well. Limitations of standard treatment modalities, which largely rely on conventional mechanical ventilation, emphasize the urgent, unmet clinical need for developing novel(bio)artificial respiratory assist devices that provide extracorporeal gas exchange with a focus on direct extracorporeal CO2 removal from the blood. In this review, we discuss some of the novel concepts and critical prerequisites for such respiratory lung assist devices that can be used with an adequate safety profile, in the intensive care setting, as well as for long-term domiciliary therapy in patients with chronic ventilatory failure. Specifically, we describe some of the pivotal steps, such as device miniaturization, passivation of the blood-contacting surfaces by chemical surface modifications, or endothelial cell seeding, all of which are required for converting current lung assist devices into ambulatory lung assist device for long-term use in critically ill patients. Finally, we also discuss some of the risks and challenges for the long-term use of ambulatory miniaturized bioartificial lungs.
The spreading area of cells has been shown to play a central role in the determination of cell fate and tissue morphogenesis; however, a clear understanding of how spread cell area is determined is still lacking. The observation that cell area and force generally increase with substrate rigidity suggests that cell area is dictated mechanically, by means of a force-balance between the cell and the substrate. A simple mechanical model, corroborated by experimental measurements of cell area and force is presented to analyze the temporal force balance between the cell and the substrate during spreading. The cell is modeled as a thin elastic disc that is actively pulled by lamellipodia protrusions at the cell front. The essential molecular mechanisms of the motor activity at the cell front, including, actin polymerization, adhesion kinetics, and the actin retrograde flow, are accounted for and used to predict the dynamics of cell spreading on elastic substrates; simple, closed-form expressions for the evolution of cell size and force are derived. Time-resolved, traction force microscopy, combined with measurements of cell area are performed to investigate the simultaneous variations of cell size and force. We find that cell area and force increase simultaneously during spreading but the force develops with an apparent delay relative to the increase in cell area. We demonstrate that this may reflect the strain-stiffening property of the cytoskeleton. We further demonstrate that the radial cell force is a concave function of spreading speed and that this may reflect the strengthening of cell–substrate adhesions during spreading.
To improve the energy conversion efficiency of solar organic cells, the clue may lie in the development of devices inspired by an efficient light harvesting mechanism of some aquatic photosynthetic microorganisms that are adapted to low light intensity. Consequently, we investigated the pathways of excitation energy transfer (EET) from successive light harvesting pigments to the low energy level inside the phycobiliprotein antenna system of Acaryochloris marina, a cyanobacterium, using a time resolved absorption difference spectroscopy with a resolution time of 200 fs. The objective was to understand the actual biochemical process and pathways that determine the EET mechanism. Anisotropy of the EET pathway was calculated from the absorption change trace in order to determine the contribution of excitonic coupling. The results reveal a new electron energy relaxation pathway of 14 ps inside the phycocyanin component, which runs from phycocyanin to the terminal emitter. The bleaching of the 660 nm band suggests a broader absorption of the terminal emitter between 660 nm and 675 nm. Further, there are trimer depolarization kinetics of 450 fs and 500 fs in high and low ionic strength, respectively, which arise from the relaxation of the β84 and α84 in adjacent monomers of phycocyanin. Under conditions of low ionic strength buffer solution, the evolution of the kinetic amplitude during the depolarization of the trimer is suggestive of trimer conservation within the phycocyanin hexamer. The anisotropy values were 0.38 and 0.40 in high and in low ionic strength, respectively, indicating that there is no excitonic delocalization in the high energy level of phycocyanin hexamers.
