For many companies, it is major international sporting events (in particular the Football World Cup or the Olympic Games) that constitute the ideal platform for the integration of their target group-specific marketing communication into an attractive sports environment. Sports event organizers sell exclusive marketing rights for their events to official sponsors, who, in return, acquire exclusive options to utilize the event for their own advertising purposes. Ambush marketing is the method used by companies that do not hold marketin rights to an event, but still use their marketing activities in diverse ways to establish a connection to it. There is still whidespread debate and confusion about the topic. Ambush marketing is often defined in different ways, by different people, according to their position as either supporters of opponents of the practice.
As long as there have been professional sports, there have been relationships on different levels. For example, sponsorship (or patronage as it was called in the early days) was mostly based on personal relations between the local benefactors and their favourite sports club. Regarding media, clubs always maintained special relationships with selected journalists. The bond between fans and their clubs was always a close and mutually beneficial one. All these relationships existed from the start of the sports business. Therefore, relationship marketing is nothing new in the context of sports. Many sporting organisations always knew to value a deep and good relationship with their stakeholders and practised relationship marketing without being aware of it. Successful sports managers, however, take the old wisdom and turn it into a modern relationship marketing approach by structuring the various relationships in order to make them more effective and profitable for the own sporting organisation and the various stakeholders. This chapter ... illustrates the many facets of relationship marketing and the possibilities it offers in the context of the sports business.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the consumers’ perception of sustainability and the application of a QR-code in stores with the focus on the information searching behavior regarding sustainable aspects. An online questionnaire was conducted with fashion students at Reutlingen University: in total, 65 students participated in the survey. Paired samples t-test and other statistical analyses were applied to test research questions. Apart from this, the research paper is based on a literature review. Furthermore, the decision was taken to use a projective method in the form of a dummy fashion fTRACE website. Key findings of the survey are that participants give sustainable aspects a higher importance with a QR-code than without one. Participants who prefer a product with detailed information experience a “positive shopping feeling” when provided with transparency via a QR-code. “Origin”, “production” and “quality” were rated of higher importance by those participants. These findings suggest that, transparency provided through the application of a QR-Code in stores influences the consumers’ perception of sustainability. Due to the small sample size of participants (65) in the study, findings of this research not generalizable to a larger population. This paper focused on the consumers’ information searching behavior regarding sustainable aspects, limiting its findings to impacts on perception of sustainability. Further research is therefore recommended.

It is known that the costs related with drug research and development (R&D) and the timelines to develop a new drug increased over the past years. In parallel, the success rates of drug projects along the pharmaceutical R&D phases are still very low, and the outcome of all R&D efforts is stagnating. In consequence, the R&D efficiency defined as the financial investment per drug has been steadily decreasing. As innovation is the major growth driver of the pharmaceutical industry, reliable data on R&D efficiency and new concepts to overcome these challenges are of great interest for R&D managers and the sustainability of the pharmaceutical industry as a whole. This book chapter reviews publications on R&D performance indicators of the past years, such as the success rates and timelines per phase. Additionally, it illustrates the factors influencing the success rates, timelines, and costs of pharmaceutical R&D most and, thus, the denominators of the R&D efficiency.
Clinical development is historically the phase in which a potential new medicine is being tested in phase 2 and phase 3 patient trials to demonstrate the new molecules' efficacy and safety to support the regulatory approval of drugs by health authorities. This relatively focused approach has been considerably expanded by a number of forces from within the pharmaceutical industry and equally important by changes in the healthcare systems. The need to identify the optimal patient population, showstoppers leading to discontinuation of clinical programs, the silent but constant removal of surrogate endpoints for registration, and the increased demand for real-life data which are used to demonstrate the patients' benefit and which have an ever-increasing role for pricing and reimbursement negotiations are today an integral part of this phase.
This chapter will review both the nuts and bolts of clinical development but also recent developments in this area which shape the environment and how the different players have reacted and what options might need to be explored in the future.
The reduced research and development (R&D) efficiency, strong competition from generics, increased cost pressure from payers, and an increased biological complexity of new target indications have resulted in a rethinking and a change from a traditional and more closed R&D model in the pharmaceutical industry toward the new paradigm of open innovation. In the past years, pharmaceutical companies have broadened their external networks toward research collaborations with academic institutes, technology providers, or codevelopment partners. To fulfill the demand to reduce timelines and costs, research-based pharmaceutical companies started to outsource R&D activities. In addition, internal R&D processes were adjusted to the more open R&D model and new processes such as alliance management were established. The corporate frontier of pharmaceutical companies became permeable and more open. As a result, the focus of pharmaceutical R&D expanded from a purely internal toward a mixed internal and external model. Today, the U.S. pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly may have established the most open model toward external innovation, as it has integrated its innovation processes with its business model. Other companies are following this more open R&D model with newer concepts such as new frontier sciences, drug discovery alliances, private public partnerships, innovation incubators, virtual R&D, crowdsourcing, open source innovation, and innovation camps.
The efficiency of pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) reflected by increasing costs of R&D, long timelines, and low probabilities of technical and regulatory success decreased continuously in the past years. Today, the costs for discovering and developing a new drug are enormously high with more than USD 2 billion per new molecular entity (NME), while the average overall success of a research project to provide an NME is in the single-digit percentage rate, and the total timelines of R&D easily exceeds 10 years questioning the return on investment (ROI) of pharmaceutical R&D. As a consequence and also caused by numerous patent expirations of blockbuster drugs that increased the pressure to return to an acceptable ROI, the pharmaceutical industry addressed this challenge and the related causes and identified several actions that need to be taken to increase the output/input ratio of R&D. This book chapter will review the pipeline sizes and the R&D investments of multinational pharmaceutical companies, will describe new processes that have been implemented to increase the reach and to reduce costs of pharmaceutical R&D, and it will illustrate new innovation models that were developed to increase the R&D efficiency.
Sportmarketing ist die spezifische Anwendung der Marketing-Prinzipien und -Prozesse auf Sportprodukte und Sportdienstleistungen im Sinne der marktorientierten Unternehmensführung. Die Prinzipien des allgemeinen Marketing können allerdings nicht ohne weiteres auf den Sport übertragen werden. Vielmehr wird ein eigenständiger Ansatz benötigt, wenn anstelle von klassischen Produkten oder Dienstleistungen der Sport ins Zentrum der Betrachtung rückt. Ein zentrales Unterscheidungsmerkmal zwischen Sportmarketing und klassischem Marketing ist der Kunde. Sportfans unterscheiden sich in vielerlei Hinsicht fundamental von Konsumenten normaler Produkte, worauf im vorliegenden Beitrag eingegangen wird.
Guerilla Marketing im Sport

Aufgrund der zunehmenden Informationsüberlastung der Konsumenten und der daraus resultierenden, steigenden Reaktanz der Rezipienten, sehen sich klassische Werbeformate einer sinkenden Werbeeffizienz ausgesetzt. Mit Hilfe von emotionsbeladenen Botschaften, die auf innovative, spektakuläre und teilweise provokante Art und Weise vermittelt werden, differenziert sich der Guerilla Marketer im Kommunikationswettbewerb und ergänzt den herkömmlichen Marketing-Mix um unkonventionelle Instrumente. Der vorliegende Beitrag behandelt das Thema Guerilla Marketing im Sport. Die Analyse und Einordnung praktischer Beispiele aus dem Sportmarketing in den marketingpolitischen Gesamtkontext zeigt, dass der Sport eine hochemotionale und äußerst medienwirksame Plattform für überraschende Guerilla Marketing Aktionen bietet, mit der sich Unternehmen aus nahezu allen Branchen profilieren und von einem Imagetransfer vom Sport hin zur Marke profitieren möchten.
Die Ticketpreise im Spitzenfußball werden immer höher. In den vergangenen Tagen haben Proteste von Fußball-Fans gegen zu hohe Ticketpreise von Vereinen international für Aufsehen gesorgt. Zuletzt protestierten Fans des FC Liverpool und von Borussia Dortmund gegen den Wucher. Dabei gehen die Vereine ein großes Risiko ein - denn Fans, die im Stadion ihre Mannschaft anfeuern und für eine entsprechende Stimmung sorgen, sind für die Vereine sehr wichtig. Was es mit den jüngsten Vorkommnissen auf sich hat und welche sportökonomischen Zusammenhänge dahinterstecken, wird im vorliegenden Beitrag erläutert.

Methacrylated gelatin and mature adipocytes are promising components for adipose tissue engineering

In vitro engineering of autologous fatty tissue constructs is still a major challenge for the treatment of congenital deformities, tumor resections or high-graded burns. In this study, we evaluated the suitability of photo-crosslinkable methacrylated gelatin (GM) and mature adipocytes as components for the composition of three-dimensional fatty tissue constructs. Cytocompatibility evaluations of the GM and the photoinitiator Lithium phenyl-2,4,6 trimethylbenzoylphosphinate (LAP) showed no cytotoxicity in the relevant range of concentrations. Matrix stiffness of cell-laden hydrogels was adjusted to native fatty tissue by tuning the degree of crosslinking and was shown to be comparable to that of native fatty tissue. Mature adipocytes were then cultured for 14 days within the GM resulting in a fatty tissue construct loaded with viable cells expressing cell markers perilipin A and laminin. This work demonstrates that mature adipocytes are a highly valuable cell source for the composition of fatty tissue equivalents in vitro. Photo-crosslinkable methacrylated gelatin is an excellent tissue scaffold and a promising bioink for new printing techniques due to its biocompatibility and tunable properties.

Durch die Einnahmen aus Studiengebühren konnten die Erwerbungsausgaben der Bibliothek um 75 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr gesteigert werden. Insgesamt wurden 50 Prozent mehr Bücher gekauft als im Jahr zuvor. Dadurch konnte die Literaturversorgung der Hochschulangehörigen erheblich verbessert werden, was sich an den expandierenden Nutzungszahlen erkennen lässt. Im Jahr 2007 verzeichnete die Bibliotheksstatistik 15 Prozent mehr aktive Nutzer und 15 Prozent mehr Erstausleihen als im Jahr zuvor. Trotz dieser positiven Entwicklungen hat im letzten Jahr die Zahl der Vormerkungen um 20 Prozent zugenommen. Das bedeutet, dass die benötigte Literatur sehr häufig verliehen und bei Bedarf nicht verfügbar ist. Im gleichen Zeitraum stieg die Zahl der Fernleihbestellungen um 26 Prozent. Im Berichtsjahr wurden erstmals 1600 E-Books erworben und im Campusnetz bereit gestellt. In Kooperation mit dem Bibliotheksservicezentrum wurde ein Hochschulschriftenserver eingerichtet, der es den Angehörigen beider Hochschulen ermöglicht, ihre Publikationen elektronisch zu veröffentlichen.
Die Medienausgaben der Hochschule Reutlingen nahmen im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 18 Prozent zu, wobei sich der Schwerpunkt zunehmend von den Printmedien auf die elektronischen Medien verlagert. Bei der Pädagogischen Hochschule gingen die Ausgaben für Medien um 9 Prozent zurück. Die Nutzungszahlen der Bibliothek stiegen in allen Bereichen: Die Zahl der Erstausleihen nahm um 2 Prozent zu, die Zahl der aktiven Bibliotheksbenutzer stieg um 5 Prozent. Die Nutzung elektronischer Medien legte um 39 Prozent zu. Die Zahl der gebenden Fernleihen stieg um 1 Prozent, die der nehmenden Fernleihen sank um 8 Prozent. Diese Zahlen spiegeln die wachsende Attraktivität des Reutlinger Bibliotheksbestands wider. Im Berichtsjahr wurden zwei Projekte begonnen: Zum einen die Ausstattung des Freihandbestands mit RFID-Etiketten, zum anderen die Installation einer Suchmaschine zur Optimierung der Recherche.
The focus of this work lies on teaching methods for product design to stimulate novelty within a multiple disciplinary educational context. To address this issue, the different types of multiple disciplinary approach are presented by reviewing existing literature. As the initial study involved looking at the correlation between disciplines and product features, the definition of product design and its relationship with industrial design and other adjacent domains are introduced. The structure of a newly developed interdisciplinary master in product design is presented and, within this program, an educational activity fostering creativity in heterogeneous multiple disciplinary environments is described. Inspired by the approach of industrial designers to generate creative solutions, it is conceived to help product design students to flexibly adapt the problem and the solution space together through an iterative process.

Denn Techniken des Storylinings und Storytellings machen eine Professionalisierung betriebswirtschaftlicher Argumentation und Gedankenführung für jedermann möglich.

Tumorzellen on the move : mikrosystem-basierter Assay zur Untersuchung der Tumorzellen-Migration

Die Invasion von Tumorzellen in umliegendes Gewebe und die Bildung von Metastasen transformieren einen lokal wachsenden Tumor in eine systemische und lebensbedrohliche Krankheit mit schlechter Prognose. Dabei spielt die aktive Migration der Tumorzellen eine entscheidende Rolle. Tumorzellen gelangen durch die aktive Zellbewegung in das Lymph- oder Blutsystem und breiten sich im Körper aus. Bei der Invasion in ein neues Organ migrieren die Zellen ebenfalls wieder in komplexer Weise durch das Gewebe und können schließlich dort Metastasen bilden. Auf Grund der enormen medizinischen Relevanz der Tumorzell-Invasion, wird die Bewegung von Tumorzellen seit Jahrzehnten unter Laborbedingungen umfassend untersucht und ist ein wichtiger Marker für die Aggressivität der Tumorzellen. Zur Bewegungsanalyse gibt es mehrere experimentelle und auch kommerziell erhältliche in-vitro Untersuchungsmethoden. Ziel des interdisziplinären Projektes „MigChip“ ist die Entwicklung, Herstellung und experimentelle Validierung eines Mikrofludik-Chips zur verbesserten, detailgenauen in-vitro Untersuchung der Tumorzellen-Migration.
The extracellular environment of vascular cells in vivo is complex in its chemical composition, physical properties, and architecture. Consequently, it has been a great challenge to study vascular cell responses in vitro, either to understand their interaction with their native environment or to investigate their interaction with artificial structures such as implant surfaces. New procedures and techniques from materials science to fabricate bio-scaffolds and surfaces have enabled novel studies of vascular cell responses under well-defined, controllable culture conditions. These advancements are paving the way for a deeper understanding of vascular cell biology and materials–cell interaction. Here, we review previous work focusing on the interaction of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and endothelial cells (ECs) with materials having micro- and nanostructured surfaces. We summarize fabrication techniques for surface topographies, materials, geometries, biochemical functionalization, and mechanical properties of such materials. Furthermore, various studies on vascular cell behavior and their biological responses to micro- and nanostructured surfaces are reviewed. Emphasis is given to studies of cell morphology and motility, cell proliferation, the cytoskeleton and cell-matrix adhesions, and signal transduction pathways of vascular cells. We finalize with a short outlook on potential interesting future studies.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the applicability of current benchmarking proposals for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and to suggest a condensed process for logistics benchmarking in SMEs.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper starts by outlining why the logistics function is of increasing importance for SMEs. It discusses the benefit of logistics benchmarking and typical SME restrictions in benchmarking. Available approaches to benchmarking are discussed and their weaknesses when applied to SME logistics benchmarking are analyzed. The paper develops a new benchmarking process framework for SME logistics benchmarking and reports findings of a case application in three German SMEs.
Eine gut funktionierende Logistik ist ein wichtiger Wettbewerbsfaktor. Um ihren Beitrag zum Unternehmenserfolg ermitteln zu können, müssen ihre Kosten aber bestimmbar sein. Daran hapert es häufig. Dabei gibt es Ansätze, um Logistikkosten von anderen Kosten abzugrenzen. Unternehmen müssen nur konkrete Regeln für ihren Einsatz berücksichtigen.
Fremdkapital ist aktuell „billig“, doch die Investitionstätigkeit von Unternehmen bleibt zurückhaltend. Wer investieren möchte, muss in erster Linie die Höhe der Kapitalkosten berücksichtigen, die im Gegensatz zu den Zinsen nur leicht gesunken sind. Controller brauchen geeignete Ansätze, um zukünftige Kapitalkosten in Investitionsentscheidungen einzubeziehen.
Die Zusammensetzung der soziografischen Strukturen einer Gesellschaft beeinflusst deren typische Charakteristika. Die für eine bestimmte Generation gängigen Merkmale wirken sich mittelbar auf die Art und Weise aus, wie Unternehmen und deren Abteilungen ihre Personalakquirierungsstrategien denken. Ein rechtzeitiges Verständnis generativer Charakteristika ist insbesondere für den Mittelstand essenziell. So konkurriert man eben auch bei hochqualifiziertem Personal mit großen internationalen Konzernen. Und Vertriebsmitarbeiter gibt es ja auch nicht wie Sand am Meer. Umgekehrt skizzieren die generativen Verhaltens- und Einstellungsmerkmale aber auch in sich partiell homogene Anforderungsprofile der Mitglieder einer solchen Generation, welche von erheblicher Praxisrelevanz sind.
Wo auch immer in Deutschland Sie Ihre Einkäufe erledigen, zumindest bei Grundnahrungsmitteln sind die Preis- und Qualitätsunterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Lebensmitteleinzelhändlern marginal. Für einen Warenkorb entstehen spürbare Preisunterschiede erst dann, wenn sich der Kunde für hochpreisige Markenprodukte entscheidet und ungewöhnlichere Artikel kauft. Und die gibt es zunehmend auch bei den klassischen Discountern, Teil eines größeren Trends, der vielen Verbrauchern noch nicht vollkommen bewusst ist. Denn die großen Discounter wandeln sich zu Einkaufsplattformen für viele Dinge des täglichen Bedarfs und werden bei steigendem Qualitätsangebot zu Wohlfühlsupermärkten. Schaffen sie damit eventuell zukünftig Raum für einen neuen Harddiscounter unterhalb der Platzhirsche?
The increasing emergence of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and a global crosslinking of these CPS to cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) are leading to fundamental changes of future work and logistic systems requiring innovative methods to plan, control and monitor changeable production systems and new forms of human-machine-collaboration. Particularly logistic systems have to obey the versatility of CPPS and will be transferred to so-called cyber physical logistic systems, since the logistical networks will underlie the requirements of constant changes initiated by changeable production systems. This development is driven and enhanced by increasingly volatile and globalized market and manufacturing environments combined with a high demand for individualized products and services. Also nowadays mainly used centralized control systems are pushed to their limits regarding their abilities to deal with the arising complexity to plan, control and monitor changeable work and logistic systems. Decentralized control systems bear the potential to cope with these challenges by distributing the required operations on various nodes of the resulting decentralized control system.
Learning factories, like the ESB Logistics Learning Factory at ESB Business School (Reutlingen University), provide a wide range of possibilities to develop new methods and innovative technical solutions in a risk-free and close-to-reality factory environment and to transfer knowledge as well as specific competences into the training of students and professionals. To intensify the research and training activities in the field of future work and logistics systems, ESB Business School is transferring its existing production system into a CPPS involving decentralized planning, control and monitoring methods and systems, human-machine-collaboration as well as technical assistance systems for changeable work and logistics systems.

A completely new business model with reference to Industrie4.0 and facilitated by 3D experience software in today's networked society in which customers expect immediate responses, delightful experience and simple solutions is one of the mission scenarios in the ESB Logistics Learning Factory at ESB Business School (Reutlingen University).
The business experience platform provides software solutions for every organization in the company respectively in the factory. An interface with dashboards, project management apps, 3D - design and construction apps with high end visualization, manufacturing and simulation apps as well as intelligence and social network apps in a collaborative interactive environment help the user to learn the creation of a value end to end process for a personalized virtual and later real produced product.
Instead of traditional ways of working and a conventional operating factory real workers and robots work semi-intuitive together. Centerpiece in the self-planned interim factory is the smart personalized product, uniquely identifiable and locatable at all times during the production process – a scooter with an individual colored mobile phone – holder for any smart phone produced with a 3D printer in lot size one. Smart products have in the future solutions incorporated internet based services – designed and manufactured - at the costs of mass products. Additionally the scooter is equipped with a retrievable declarative product memory. Monitoring and control is handled by sensor tags and a raspberry positioned on the product. The engineering design and implementation of a changeable production system is guided by a self-execution system that independently find amongst others esplanade workplaces.
The imparted competences to students and professionals are project management method SCRUM, customization of workflows by Industrie4.0 principles, the enhancements of products with new personalized intelligent parts, electrical and electronic selfprogrammed components and the control of access of the product memory information, to plan in a digital engineering environment and set up of the physical factory to produce customer orders. The gained action-orientated experience refers to the chances and requirements for holistic digital and physical systems.
Context: An experiment-driven approach to software product and service development is gaining increasing attention as a way to channel limited resources to the efficient creation of customer value. In this approach, software capabilities are developed incrementally and validated in continuous experiments with stakeholders such as customers and users. The experiments provide factual feedback for guiding subsequent development.
Objective: This paper explores the state of the practice of experimentation in the software industry. It also identifies the key challenges and success factors that practitioners associate with the approach.
Method: A qualitative survey based on semi-structured interviews and thematic coding analysis was conducted. Ten Finnish software development companies, represented by thirteen interviewees, participated in the study.
Results: The study found that although the principles of continuous experimentation resonated with industry practitioners, the state of the practice is not yet mature. In particular, experimentation is rarely systematic and continuous. Key challenges relate to changing the organizational culture, accelerating the development cycle speed, and finding the right measures for customer value and product success. Success factors include a supportive organizational culture, deep customer and domain knowledge, and the availability of the relevant skills and tools to conduct experiments.
Conclusions: It is concluded that the major issues in moving towards continuous experimentation are on an organizational level; most significant technical challenges have been solved. An evolutionary approach is proposed as a way to transition towards experiment-driven development.
Software process improvement (SPI) has been around for decades: frameworks are proposed, success factors are studied, and experiences have been reported. However, the sheer mass of concepts, approaches, and standards published over the years overwhelms practitioners as well as researchers. What is out there? Are there new trends and emerging approaches? What are open issues? Still, we struggle to answer these questions about the current state of SPI and related research. In this article, we present results from an updated systematic mapping study to shed light on the field of SPI, to develop a big picture of the state of the art, and to draw conclusions for future research directions. An analysis of 769 publications draws a big picture of SPI-related research of the past quarter-century. Our study shows a high number of solution proposals, experience reports, and secondary studies, but only few theories and models on SPI in general. In particular, standard SPI models like CMMI and ISO/IEC 15,504 are analyzed, enhanced, and evaluated for applicability in practice, but these standards are also critically discussed, e.g., from the perspective of SPI in small to-medium-sized companies, which leads to new specialized frameworks. New and specialized frameworks account for the majority of the contributions found (approx. 38%). Furthermore, we find a growing interest in success factors (approx. 16%) to aid companies in conducting SPI and in adapting agile principles and practices for SPI (approx. 10%). Beyond these specific topics, the study results also show an increasing interest into secondary studies with the purpose of aggregating and structuring SPI-related knowledge. Finally, the present study helps directing future research by identifying under-researched topics awaiting further investigation.
Software development consists to a large extend of humanbased processes with continuously increasing demands regarding interdisciplinary team work. Understanding the dynamics of software teams can be seen as highly important to successful project execution. Hence, for future project managers, knowledge about non-technical processes in teams is significant. In this paper, we present a course unit that provides an environment in which students can learn and experience the impact of group dynamics on project performance and quality. The course unit uses the Tuckman model as theoretical framework, and borrows from controlled experiments to organize and implement its practical parts in which students then experience the effects of, e.g., time pressure, resource bottlenecks, staff turnover, loss of key personnel, and other stress factors. We provide a detailed design of the course unit to allow for implementation in further software project management courses. Furthermore, we provide experiences obtained from two instances of this unit conducted in Munich and Karlskrona with 36 graduate students. We observed students building awareness of stress factors and developing counter measures to reduce impact of those factors. Moreover, students experienced what problems occur when teams work under stress and how to form a performing team despite exceptional situations.
For decades, Software Process Improvement (SPI) programs have been implemented, inter alia, to improve quality and speed of software development. To set up, guide, and carry out SPI projects, and to measure SPI state, impact, and success, a multitude of different SPI approaches and considerable experience are available. SPI addresses many aspects ranging from individual developer skills to entire organizations. It comprises for instance the optimization of specific activities in the software lifecycle as well as the creation of organization awareness and project culture. In the course of conducting a systematic mapping study on the state-of-the-art in SPI from a general perspective, we observed Global Software Engineering (GSE) becoming a topic of interest in recent years. Therefore, in this paper, we provide a detailed investigation of those papers from the overall systematic mapping study that were classified as addressing SPI in the context of GSE. From the main study’s result set, a set of 30 papers dealing with GSE was selected for an in-depth analysis using the systematic review instrument to study the contributions and to develop an initial picture of how GSE is considered from the perspective of SPI. Our findings show the analyzed papers delivering a substantial discussion of cultural models and how such models can be used to better address and align SPI programs with multi-national environments. Furthermore, experience is shared discussing how agile approaches can be implemented in companies working at the global scale. Finally, success factors and barriers are studied to help companies implementing SPI in a GSE context.

In this paper, we present a course unit that provides an environment in which students can learn and experience the role of different communication patterns in distributed agile software development. In particular, students gain awareness about the importance of communication by experiencing the impact of limitations of communication channels and the effects on collaboration and team performance. The course unit presented uses the controlled experiment instrument to provide the basic organization of a small software project carried out in virtual teams. We provide a detailed design of the course unit to allow for implementation in further courses. Furthermore, we provide experiences obtained from implementing this course unit with 16 graduate students. We observed students struggling with technical aspects and team coordination in general, while not realizing the importance of communication channels (or their absence). Furthermore, we could show the students that lacking communication protocols impact team coordination and performance regardless of the communication channels used.
The internet of things, enterprise social networks, adaptive case management, mobility systems, analytics for big data, and cloud environments are emerging to support smart connected i.e. digital products and services and the digital transformation. Biological metaphors for living and adaptable ecosystems are currently providing the logical foundation for resilient run-time environments with serviceoriented digitization architectures and for self-optimizing intelligent business services and related distributed information systems. We are investigating mechanisms for flexible adaptation and evolution of information systems with digital architecture in the context of the ongoing digital transformation. The goal is to support flexible and agile transformations for both business and related information systems through adaptation and dynamical evolution of their digital architectures. The present research paper investigates mechanisms of decision analytics for digitization architectures, putting a spotlight to internet of things micro-granular architectures, by extending original enterprise architecture reference models with digitization architectures and their multi-perspective architectural decision management.
The digitization of our society changes the way we live, work, learn, communicate, and collaborate. This disruptive change interacts with all information processes and systems that are important business enablers for the context of digitization since years. Our aim is to support flexibility and agile transformations for both business domains and related information technology with more flexible enterprise information systems through adaptation and evolution of digital enterprise architectures. The present research paper investigates the continuous bottom-up integration of micro-granular architectures for a huge amount of dynamically growing systems and services, like microservices and the Internet of Things, as part of a new digital enterprise architecture. To integrate micro granular architecture models to living architectural model versions we are extending more traditional enterprise architecture reference models with state of art elements for agile architectural engineering to support the digitization of products, services, and processes.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a widely used modification for drug delivery systems. It reduces undesired interaction with biological components, aggregation of complexes and serves as a hydrophilic linker of ligands for targeted drug delivery. However, PEGylation can also lead to undesired changes in physicochemical characteristics of chitosan/siRNA nanoplexes and hamper gene silencing.
To address this conflicting issue, PEG-chitosan copolymers were synthesized with stepwise increasing degrees of PEG substitution (1.5% to 8.0%). Subsequently formed PEG-chitosan/siRNA nanoplexes were characterized physicochemically and biologically. The results showed that small ratios of chitosan PEGylation did not affect nanoplex stability and density. However, higher PEGylation ratios reduced nanoplex size and charge, as well as cell uptake and final siRNA knockdown efficiency.
Therefore, we recommend fine-tuning of PEGylation ratios to generate PEG-chitosan/siRNA delivery systems with maximum bioactivity. The degree of PEGylation for chitosan/siRNA nanoplexes should be kept low in order to maintain optimal nanoplex efficiency.
The effect of Hofmeister anions on the surface properties of polyelectrolyte multilayers built from hyaluronan and chitosan by layer-by-layer deposition is studied by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. The thickness, roughness and morphology of the resulting coatings were found to depend on the type of the anion. Relationship between the surface properties and the biological response of the polyelectrolyte multilayers is established by assessing the degree of protein (albumin) adsorption.

Herein the optimization of the physicochemical properties and surface biocompatibility of polyelectrolyte multilayers of the natural, biocompatible and biodegradable, linear polysaccharides hyaluronan and chitosan by Hofmeister anions was systematically investigated. We demonstrated that there is an interconnection between the bulk and surface properties of HA/Chi multilayers both varying in accordance with the arrangement of the anions in the Hofmeister series. Kosmotropic anions increased the hydration, thickness, micro- and macro-roughness, and hydrophilicity and improved the biocompatibility of the films by reduction (2 orders of magnitude) of the films stiffness and complete anti-thrombogenicity.
Die Zusammensetzung der soziografischen Strukturen einer Gesellschaft beeinflusst deren typische Charakteristika. Die für eine bestimmte Generation gängigen Merkmale wirken sich mittelbar auf die Art und Weise aus, wie Unternehmen und deren Abteilungen ihre Personalakquirierungsstrategien denken. Ein rechtzeitiges Verständnis generativer Charakteristika ist insbesondere für den Mittelstand essenziell. So konkurriert man eben auch bei hochqualifiziertem Personal mit großen internationalen Konzernen. Und Vertriebsmitarbeiter gibt es ja auch nicht wie Sand am Meer. Umgekehrt skizzieren die generativen Verhaltens- und Einstellungsmerkmale aber auch in sich partiell homogene Anforderungsprofile der Mitglieder einer solchen Generation, welche von erheblicher Praxisrelevanz sind.

The power supply is one of the major challenges for applications like internet of things IoTs and smart home. The maintenance issue of batteries and the limited power level of energy harvesting is addressed by the integrated micro power supply presented in this paper. Connected to the 120/230 Vrms mains, which is one of the most reliable energy sources and anywhere indoor available, it provides a 3.3V DC output voltage. The micro power supply consists of a fully integrated ACDC and DCDC converter with one external low voltage SMD buffer capacitor. The micro power supply is fabricated in a low cost 0.35 μm 700 V CMOS technology and covers a die size of 7.7 mm². The use of only one external low voltage SMD capacitor, results in an extremely compact form factor. The ACDC is a direct coupled, full wave rectifier with a subsequent bipolar shunt regulator, which provides an output voltage around 17 V. The DCDC stage is a fully integrated 4:1 SC DCDC converter with an input voltage as high as 17 V and a peak efficiency of 45 %. The power supply achieves an overall output power of 3 mW, resulting in a power density of 390 μW/mm². This exceeds prior art by a factor of 11.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively characterise the interdisciplinary phenomenon of ambush marketing in sports, structure its manifestations, illustrate the consequences associated with ambush marketing and provide a critical evaluation from an objective perspective.
Design/methodology/approach: Various approaches to the definition of ambush marketing are presented and the objectives pursued with ambush marketing are identified. In this paper a new approach has been developed to structure the strategies and manifestations of ambush marketing.
Findings: It is a fine line between creative marketing and infringing on sponsorship rights. So the interdisciplinary phenomenon ambush marketing is discussed controversially. Ambush marketing is situated at the intersection of two opposing spheres of interest conducting a battle for shares of the marketing potential of a sports event. On one side there is the disparaging view of ambush marketing founded on legal and/or ethical considerations. On the other, the author has the respectful assessment of ambushers characterised by their innovative, creative marketing.
Practical implications: The analysis conducted in this paper leads to the conclusion that a general evaluation or condemnation of ambush marketing is not feasible. A four-field matrix emerges from the combination of a legal statutory consideration on one hand and an ethical-moral assessment on the other.
Originality/value: The paper describes and structures ambush marketing in a novel form and discusses illustrating examples from major sporting events. Ambush marketing is evaluated from a neutral perspective by summarising the opportunities and threats of ambush marketing which leads to a nuanced contemplation of ambush marketing.
A highly integrated synchronous buck converter with a predictive dead time control for input voltages >18 V with 10 MHz switching frequency is presented. A high resolution dead time of ˜125 ps allows to reduce dead time dependent losses without requiring body diode conduction to evaluate the dead time. High resolution is achieved by frequency compensated sampling of the switching node and by an 8 bit differential delay chain. Dead time parameters are derived in a comprehensive study of dead time depended losses. This way, the efficiency of fast switching DC-DC converters can be optimized by eliminating the body diode forward conduction losses, minimizing reverse recovery losses and by achieving zero voltage switching. High-speed circuit blocks for fast switching operation are presented including level shifter, gate driver, PWM generator. The converter has been implemented in a 180 nm high-voltage BiCMOS technology.
In recent years, significant progress has been made on switched-capacitor DC-DC converters as they enable fully integrated on-chip power management. New converter topologies overcame the fixed input-to-output voltage limitation and achieved high efficiency at high power densities. SC converters are attractive to not only mobile handheld devices with small input and output voltages, but also for power conversion in IoE, industrial and automotive applications, etc. Such applications need to be capable of handling widely varying input voltages of more than 10V, which requires a large amount of conversion ratios. The goal is to achieve a fine granularity with the least number of flying capacitors. In [1] an SC converter was introduced that achieves these goals at low input voltage VIN ≤ 2.5V. [2] shows good efficiency up to VIN = 8V while its conversion ratio is restricted to ≤1/2 with a limited, non-equidistant number of conversion steps. A particular challenge arises with increasing input voltage as several loss mechanisms like parasitic bottom-plate losses and gate-charge losses of high-voltage transistors become of significant influence. High input voltages require supporting circuits like level shifters, auxiliary supply rails etc., which allocate additional area and add losses [2-5]. The combination of both increasing voltage and conversion ratios (VCR) lowers the efficiency and the achievable output power of SC converters. [3] and [5] use external capacitors to enable higher output power, especially for higher VIN. However, this is contradictory to the goal of a fully integrated power supply.
An integrated synchronous buck converter with a high resolution dead time control for input voltages up to 48V and 10MHz switching frequency is presented. The benefit of an enhanced dead time control at light loads to enable zero voltage switching at both the high-side and low-side switch at low output load is studied. This way, compact multi-MHz DCDC converters can be implemented at high efficiency over a wide load current range. The concept also eliminates body diode forward conduction losses and minimizes reverse recovery losses. A dead time resolution of 125 ps is realized by an 8-bit differential delay chain. A further efficiency enhancement by soft switching at the high-side switch at light load is achieved with a voltage boost of the switching node by dead time control in forced continuous conduction mode. The monolithic converter is implemented in an 180nm high-voltage BiCMOS technology. At V IN = 48V, V OUT = 5V, 50mA load, 10MHz switching frequency and 500 nH output inductance, the efficiency is measured to be increased by 14.4% compared to a conventional predictive dead time control. A peak efficiency of 80.9% is achieved at 12V input.
Size and cost of a boost converter can be minimized by reducing the voltage overshoot and fastening the transient response in case of load transient. The presented technique improves the transient response of a current mode controlled boost converter, which usually suffers from bandwidth limitation because of its right-half-plane zero (RHPZ). The proposed technique comprises a load current estimation which works as part of a digital controller without any additional measurements. Based on the latest load estimation the controller parameters are adapted, achieving small voltage overshoot and fast transient response. The presented technique was implemented in a digital control circuit, consisting of an ASIC in a 110 nm-technology, a Xilinx Spartan-6 field programmable gate array (FPGA), and a TI-ADS8422 analog to-digital-converter (ADC). Simulation and measurements of a 4V-to-6.3V, 500mA boost converter show an improvement of 50% in voltage overshoot and response time to load transient.
The loss contribution of a 2.3kW synchronous GaN-HEMT boost converter for an input voltage of 250V and an output voltage of 500V was analyzed. A simulation model which consists of two parts is introduced. First, a physics-based model is used to determine the switching losses. Then, a system simulation is applied to calculate the losses of the specific elements. This approach allows a fast and accurate system evaluation as required for further system optimization.
In this work, a hard- and a zero-voltage turn-on switching converter are compared. Measurements were performed to verify the simulation model, showing a good agreement. A peak efficiency of 99% was achieved for an output power of 1.4kW. Even with an output power above 400W, it was possible to obtain a system efficiency exceeding 98 %.
Influence of metallization layout on aging detector lifetime under cyclic thermo-mechanical stress

The influence of the layout on early warning detectors in BCD technologies for metallization failure under cyclic thermo-mechanical stress was investigated. Different LDMOS transistors, with narrow or wide metal fingers and with or without embedded detectors, were used. The test structures were repeatedly stressed by pronounced self-heating until failure (a short circuit) was detected. The results show that the layout of the on-chip metallization has a large impact on the lifetime. A significant influence of the detectors on the lifetime was also observed, in our case causing a reduction of more than a factor of two, but only for the test structure with narrow metal fingers. The experimental results are explained by an efficient numerical thermo mechanical simulation approach, giving detailed insights into the strain distribution in the metal system. These results are important for aging detector design and, morever, for LDMOS on-chip metal layout in general.
In many automotive applications, repetitive selfheating is the most critical operation condition for LDMOS transistors in smart power ICs. This is attributed to thermomechanical stress in the on-chip metallization, which results from the different thermal expansion coefficients of the metal and the intermetal dielectric. After many cycles, the accumulated strain in the metallization can lead to short circuits, thus limiting the lifetime. Increasing the LDMOS size can help to lower peak temperatures and therefore to reduce the stress. The downside of this is a higher cost. Hence, it has been suggested to use resilient systems that monitor the LDMOS metallization and lower the stress once a certain level of degradation is reached. Then, lifetime requirements can be fulfilled without oversizing LDMOS transistors, even though a certain performance loss has to be accepted. For such systems, suitable sensors for metal degradation are required. This work proposes a floating metal line embedded in the LDMOS metallization. The suitability of this approach has been investigated experimentally by test structures and shown to be a promising candidate. The obtained results will be explained by means of numerical thermo-mechanical simulations.
Dezentrale Stromerzeugungsanlagen, Energiespeicher und Steuerungseinrichtungen für Erzeuger und Verbraucher sind die Grundbausteine eines virtuellen Kraftwerks, welches im Stromnetz der Zukunft, dem Smart Grid, eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Im Rahmen des Demonstrationsprojekts Virtuelles Kraftwerk Neckar-Alb soll an der Hochschule Reutlingen eine Demonstrationsanlage aufgebaut werden, die diese Grundbausteine vernetzt und funktional integriert. Damit entsteht eine flexible Testumgebung für Forschung und Lehre, in der sich das Zusammenspiel der Komponenten untersuchen lässt. Zudem wird eine Besichtigungsmöglichkeit für interessierte Unternehmen geschaffen. Damit sollen Akzeptanz und Verständnis für die Thematik gefördert werden.
Systemic Constellation describes an approach that enables practitioners to examine and address typical issues in diversity management from a different, relational perspective. Systemic Constellation utilizes the human ability to recognize the qualities of relationships between two or more people from their spatial alignment to each other (transverbal language) and the capability to illustrate inner pictures by placing humans or objects in a room as representatives (representative perception). Systemic Constellation originated in the field of family therapy and counseling, but through research, guidance work, and teaching activities over the last two decades, it has developed into a generic, structural, constellation logic with multiple methods of application. It has been adapted to a variety of topics and issues, and a number of constellation formats. This article serves as a starting point for the transfer of Systemic Constellation into diversity management. It appears that conventional approaches taught in traditional management classes (such as focusing on tools, setting targets, planning measures, and offering incentives) are of limited use when trying to deal with problematic situations in diversity management. Preliminary trials show that new solutions and insights into deeper underlying dynamics can be gained on personal and institutional levels when applying Systemic Constellation. Participants find the application of the model as very beneficial. Systemic Constellation is grounded in personal experience and particularly in a person’s own experience of the consistency of representative perception. This viewpoint can only be conveyed rudimentarily in a scientific article. Readers should feel encouraged to apply Systemic Constellations themselves and use it in their work, experimentally and professionally. To harness the full potential of Systemic Constellations in diversity management, further research needs to be done.
The paper studies liquidity management in the banking sector at the zero lower bound implemented by central banks. The new era of monetary policy with interest rates at zero and quantitative easing programs raise questions about the effectiveness of central banking policy and their impact on the banking sector. I find that the zero lower bound reduces liquidity reserves of banks and thus creates less credit supply. The T-LTRO program, developed by the European Central Bank, has helped to tackle this problem. However, the recently expanded asset purchase program reveals the opposite effect. Hence, the recent liquidity provisions by central banks have put incentives rather on de-leveraging than bank lending.
This article analyses and compares the performance of regulators in the fields of finance and sport, especially cycling. I hypothesize that the courses of crises or scandals is the best time to study the lessons of regulatory response. First, I take into account the differences in both finance and cycling by looking at the nature of the rules and institutions governing the field. Second, I estimate the attention effect on new regulation in response to crises or scandals. The interest of the paper is in the alignment of incentives to prevent regulatory capture and to ensure accountability and enforceability. The paper concludes that the differences hold important lessons that call for the reform of rules and institutions governing finance and cycling alike.
This paper analyzes different government debt relief programs in the European Monetary Union. I build a model and study different options ranging from debt relief to the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). The analysis reveals the following: First, patient countries repay debt, while impatient countries more likely consume and default. Second, without ESM loans, indebted countries default anyway. Third, if the probability to be an impatient government is high, then the supply of loans is constrained. In general, sustainable and unsustainable governments should be incentivized differently especially in a supranational monetary union. Finally, I develop policy recommendations for the ongoing debate in the Eurozone.
This paper is a commentary on the book ‘Probability and stochastic processes’ from Ionut Florescu. The book is an excellent introduction to both probability theory and stochastic processes. It provides a comprehensive discussion of the main statistical concepts including the theorems and proofs. The introduction to probability theory is easy accessible and a perfect starting point for undergraduate students even with majors in other subjects than science, such as business or engineering. The book is also up-to-date because it includes programming code for simulations. However, the book has some weaknesses. It is less convincing in more advanced topics of stochastic theory and it does not include solutions to excises and recent research trends.
On the way to achieving higher degrees of autonomy for vehicles in complicated, ever changing scenarios, the localization problem poses a very important role. Especially the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem has been studied greatly in the past. For an autonomous system in the real world, we present a very cost-efficient, robust and very precise localization approach based on GraphSLAM and graph optimization using radar sensors. We are able to prove on a dynamically changing parking lot layout that both mapping and localization accuracy are very high. To evaluate the performance of the mapping algorithm, a highly accurate ground truth map generated from a total station was used. Localization results are compared to a high precision DGPS/INS system. Utilizing these methods, we can show the strong performance of our algorithm.
Reliable and accurate car driver head pose estimation is an important function for the next generation of advanced driver assistance systems that need to consider the driver state in their analysis. For optimal performance, head pose estimation needs to be non-invasive, calibration-free and accurate for varying driving and illumination conditions. In this pilot study we investigate a 3D head pose estimation system that automatically fits a statistical 3D face model to measurements of a driver’s face, acquired with a low-cost depth sensor on challenging real-world data. We evaluate the results of our sensor-independent, driver-adaptive approach to those of a state-of-the-art camera-based 2D face tracking system as well as a non-adaptive 3D model relative to own ground-truth data, and compare to other 3D benchmarks. We find large accuracy benefits of the adaptive 3D approach.
Das Buch analysiert die Herausforderungen der Distribution in Afrika am konkreten Beispiel der Distributionslogistik in Westafrika und bietet konkrete Lösungsansätze für Unternehmen. Afrika rückt seit einigen Jahren zunehmend als Absatzmarkt für westliche Unternehmen in den Fokus. So nimmt auch die Frage nach dem passenden Distributionsansatz eine zentrale Rolle bei Markteintritt und -bearbeitung ein. Dabei sind die größten Herausforderungen, die Güter zeitnah, zuverlässig und kostengünstig an die Kunden zu liefern.
Neben den unmittelbaren Herausforderungen aus dem unzulänglichen Zustand der physischen Transportinfrastruktur stellen die indirekten, weichen Faktoren Unternehmen bei der Distributionslogistik immer wieder vor Probleme. Die dargestellten Lösungsansätze basieren u. a. auf Interviews mit Unternehmen, die bereits Erfahrungen bei den logistischen Herausforderungen in Westafrika gemacht haben. So bekommen westliche Unternehmen konkrete und praktikable Hinweise für einen erfolgreichen Markteintritt in (West-)Afrika.
The paper focuses on a recently introduced paradigm for the logistic process of picking, with respect to the man-to-goods and goods-to-man concept: the robot to-goods. First the task and system architecture of the fast deployable autonomous commissioning system are described, then the economic efficiency of the system is analysed in a real business case scenario using a simplified method, which is explained and discussed. The clearly positive net present value of the investment and the short payback period obtained in the business case prove how the robot-to-goods paradigm for the commissioning process, implemented through the automation of the forklift platform, is economically attractive for small and medium size enterprises.
Die Analyse der geometrischen Parameter der Werkzeuge und der kinematisch bedingten Eingriffsverhältnisse beim Fräsen führen zu einer erheblichen Beeinflussung der Schneidenbelastungen während des Einsatzes. Eine exzentrische Aufnahme von Schaftwerkzeugen bedeutet eine deutliche Belastung der exzentrischen Schneiden. Diese Belastung liegt deutlich über der durch die Ungleichteilung erzeugten Kraftmodulation. Weiterhin werden durch die Impulsbelastung der Schneideneintritte die Resonanzen der Struktur angeregt. Dies beeinflusst zum einen die Messungen mit der Kraftmessplattform. Zum anderen werden während der realen Bearbeitung durch diese Wechselwirkung die Oberflächen der bearbeiteten Bauteile beeinflusst.

MIT CISR findings indicate that product variety is NOT directly related to firm performance, and IS related to increased difficulties for costumers and employees.
Recent MIT CISR research found that an obsessive focus on innovation is a characteristic of CIOs of top-performing firms. There are now more ways than ever that a firm can be disrupted by and disruptive with digital innovations. Indeed, a growing number of firms and individuals are using increasingly powerful digital technologies and figuring out ways to develop better products and services, better customer and employee experiences, and new business models. The new digital imperative is to compete with more types of digital innovations - and IT units must refine approaches to producing them. Based on an in-depth caste study, this briefing takes a look at how German car manufacturer AUDI AG has expanded its portfolio of digital innovations.
The MIT Center for Information Systems Research surveyed 255 executives in 2015 to investigate how companies are managing business complexity. This report details the findings from our analysis of the survey data:
1. Some product complexity adds value, some does not. Specifically, companies with more links (aka integration) in their product and service portfolio are higher performing. - 2. Product variety makes it more difficult for costumers and employees to get things done. These customers and employee difficulties impair a company's performance. - 3. Companies that excel at making it easy for employees and customers to get things done differentiate themselves by applying a set of complexity management practices around enterprise architecture, role reconfiguration, and the use of metrics and incentive systems.
Based on these findings, we recommend that companies make product complexity a strategic chois, invest in the abovementioned complexity management practices, and use costumer and employee dfficulties as key metrics for product innovation.
The proliferation of convergence of digital technologies SMACIT (social, mobile, analytics, cloud, and Internet of Things) has created significant threats and opportunities to established companies. Business leaders must rethink their business strategies and develop what we refer to as a digital strategy. Our research shows four keys to successfully defining and executing a digital strategy:
1. zeroing in on a customer engagement or digitized solutions strategy to guide the transformation, 2. building operational excellence, 3. creating a powerful digital services backbone to facilitate rapid innovation and responsiveness, and 4. ensuring ongoing organizational redesign. A list of publications from the research is provided at the end of this document.
In 2016, German car manufacturer the Audi Group (AUDI AG) was working on an expanding array of digital innovations. The goals of these innovations varied, and included strengthening customer- and employee-facing processes, digitally enhancing existing products, and developing new, potentially disruptive business models. Audi's IT unit was critical to each of these efforts. This case examines the different ways in which digitization can help to enhance and transform an organization's processes, products, and business models. The case also highlights the challenges that may arise as organizations attempt to expand and diversify their portfolio of digital innovations.
In its 100+ years of company history, IBM reinvented itself multiple times. In the last 20 years, IBM had shifted from individual products to integrated solutions and moved to become a globally integrated enterprise with standardized processes. In 2014, the expanding adoption of social, mobile, analytics, and cloud (SMAC) technologies generated excitement in the industry. IBM believed these technologies presented a huge growth opportunity. Simultaneously, management viewed SMAC technologies as disruptive forces demanding transformative changes to how IBM worked. And introducing new ways of working to 400,000 employees in 175 countries was a daunting task.
Based on personal interviews with 17 IBM business and IT executives, the case illustrates organizational challenges of introducing current technologies that even providers of these technologies face – in other words, when they “eat their own cooking.” It demonstrates the difficulties large companies face when implementing technologies that students use daily and take for granted.
The digital economy poses existential threats to — and game-changing opportunities for — companies that were successful in the pre-digital economy. What will distinguish those companies that successfully transform from those that become historical footnotes? This is the question a group of six researchers and consultants from Boston Consulting Group set out to examine. The team conducted in-depth interviews with senior executives at twenty-seven companies in different industries to explore the strategies and organizational initiatives they relied on to seize the opportunities associated with new, readily accessible digital technologies. This paper summarizes findings from this research and offers recommendations to business leaders responsible for digital business success.

One-pot synthesis of micron partly hollow anisotropic dumbbell shaped silica core-shell particles

A facile method is described to prepare micron partly hollow dumbbell silica particles in a single step. The obtained particles consist of a large dense part and a small hollow lobe. The spherical dense core as well as the hollow lobe are covered by mesoporous channels. In the case of a smaller lobe these channels are responsible for the permeability of the shell which was demonstrated by confocal imaging and spectroscopy.
Industrial hybrid systems with high pv penetration : performance, analysis and key success factors

Since the first industrial-scale hybrid system was installed by SMA in 2012, information about the performance of several hybrid systems around the world has been monitored. This paper analyses the performance of SMA’s largest PV-Diesel hybrid system in the industrial-scale installed in Bolivia in 2014 and summarizes the lessons learned by managing this system with large-scale energy storage. The paper finally concludes with an outlook for future hybrid systems.
This article discusses the scientifically and industrially important problem of automating the process of unloading goods from standard shipping containers. We outline some of the challenges barring further adoption of robotic solutions to this problem, ranging from handling a vast variety of shapes, sizes, weights, appearances, and packing arrangements of the goods, through hard demands on unloading speed and reliability, to ensuring that fragile goods are not damaged. We propose a modular and reconfigurable software framework in an attempt to efficiently address some of these challenges. We also outline the general framework design and the basic functionality of the core modules developed. We present two instantiations of the software system on two different fully integrated demonstrators: 1) coping with an industrial scenario, i.e., the automated unloading of coffee sacks with an already economically interesting performance; and 2) a scenario used to demonstrate the capabilities of our scientific and technological developments in the context of medium- to long-term prospects of automation in logistics. We performed evaluations that allowed us to summarize several important lessons learned and to identify future directions of research on autonomous robots for the handling of goods in logistics applications.
This work investigates the electro-thermal behavior and failure mechanism of a 600V depletion-mode GaN HEMT by experimental analysis and numerical thermal simulations. For this device, the positive temperature coefficient of the draingate leakage current can lead to the formation of hot spots. This localized thermal runaway which ultimately results in a breakdown of the inherent drain-gate junction is found to be the dominant cause of failure.
This paper presents an efficient implementation of a reconfigurable battery stack which allows full exploitation of the capacity of every single cell. Contrary to most other approaches, it is possible to electrically remove one or more cells from the battery stack. Therefore, the overall capacity of the system is not restricted by the weaker cells, and cells with very different states of health can be used, making the system very attractive for refurbished batteries. For the required switches, low-voltage high-current MOSFETs are used. A demonstrator has been built with a total capacity of up to 3.5 kWh, a nominal voltage of 35 V, and currents up 200 A.
This paper presents a compact 3 kW bidirectional GaN-HEMT DC/DC converter for 360V to 400-500 V. A very high efficiency has been reached by applying a zero voltage turn-on in conjunction with a negative gate-source voltage, even though normally-off HEMTs are used. Further improvements were achieved by adapting the switching frequency to the load current and output voltage, as will be explained by means of the loss contribution of the specific elements for a constant and an adaptive switching frequency. Measurements have shown a high converter efficiency exceeding 99% over a wide output power range of up to 3 kW.
The efficiency impact of air-cored inductors used close to and beyond its cut-off frequency in multi-MHz converters is investigated. A method is presented to determine the converter switching frequency that causes the lowest losses in a given inductor. Influential parameters are analysed to optimize an inductor for a predefined switching frequency.
Switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) convert an input DC-voltage into a higher or lower output voltage. In automotive, analog control is mostly used in order to keep the required output voltages constant and resistant to disturbances. The design of robust analog control for SMPS faces parameter variations of integrated and external passive components. Using digital control, parameter variations can be eliminated and the required area for the integrated circuit can be reduced at the same time.
Digital control design bears challenges like the prevention of limit cycle oscillations and controller wind-up. This paper reviews how to prevent these effects. Digital control loops introduce new sources for dead times in the control loop, for example the latency of the analog-to-digitalconverter (ADC). Dead times have negative influence on the stability of the control loop, because they lead to phase delays. Consequently, low latency is one of the key requirements for analog-to-digital converters in digitally controlled SMPS.
Exploiting the example of a 500 kHz-buck converter with a crossover frequency of 70 kHz, this paper shows that the 5 μs-latency of a 16-analog-to-digital-converter leads to a reduction in phase margin of 126°. The latency is less critical for boost converters because of their inherent lower crossover frequencies.
Finally, the paper shows a comparison between analog and digital control of SMPS with regard to chip area and test costs.
In this article an energy harvesting system for measuring the wind speed starting from 2 m/s (about 2 Bft) is presented, which uses the same source for measuring and supplying power (energy autarkic). The use of the same source for measurement and power supply increases the number of potential applications since needed power is present with the measuring signal. For the case of measuring the wind velocity, one might consider applications in tunnels, tubes, pipelines, air conditioning or for controlling clogging of filters. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is chosen as radio technology, since it provides the possibility to realize a unidirectional communication; requiring only a single telegram (advertising telegram) for sending the measured value. A more complex establishment of communication required by WLAN or 6LoWPAN could therefore be avoided to significantly reduce the overall energy consumption. Since the advertisement telegram does not make any provision for security or against hacking in general, a security concept is presented which includes encryption and resilience against replay attacks in a unidirectional communication system.
To facilitate the presented concepts beyond wind sensors, the system is divided into three major modules namely the generator-sensor module, the radio module and the energy management module. Whereas the first two might be changed in different applications the energy management module could be reused in many different applications. It supplies and stores the needed energy and switches power on and off in a deterministic way to ensure the radio module can operate correctly.
The increasing slew rate of modern power switches can increase the efficiency and reduce the size of power electronic applications. This requires a fast and robust signal transmission to the gate driver of the high-side switch. This work proposes a galvanically isolated capacitive signal transmission circuit to increase common mode transient immunity (CMTI). An additional signal path is introduced to significantly improve the transmission robustness for small duty cycles to assure a safe turn-off of the power switch. To limit the input voltage range at the comparator on the secondary side during fast high-side transitions, a clamping structure is implemented. A comparison between a conventional and the proposed signal transmission is performed using transistor level simulations. A propagation delay of about 2 ns over a wide range of voltage transients of up to 300V/ns at input voltages up to 600V is achieved.
Der Wärmespeicher einer KWK-Anlage kann genutzt werden, um den Betrieb des BHKWs in die Zeiten des Stromverbrauchs zu verlagern. Die Ad-hoc-Zuschaltfunktion verbessert das Ergebnis gegenüber eines auf Basis von Prognosen erstellten Fahrplans. Zu beachten sind allerdings eine erhöhte Anzahl BHKW-Starts und erhöhte Wärmeverluste am Speicher. Die deutlich besten Ergebnisse werden für BHKW mit Leistungsmodulation erzielt.
Pendeln im Alter : eine Fallstudie zu transnationaler Migration zwischen Deutschland und der Türkei

Alter und Migration sind bisher kaum in Bezug zueinander gesetzt worden. Wie wirken sich migrationsspezifische Faktoren auf Alltag und Lebensplanung von Rentner/innen aus? Inwiefern beeinflussen Alter und Altern das Pendeln zwischen Herkunfts- und Einwanderungsland? Diese Fragen beantwortet Felicia Sparacio am Beispiel von Rentner/innen, die zwischen Deutschland und der Türkei pendeln. Sie untersucht deren soziale Netzwerke, konzentriert sich auf Alter in Verbindung mit Gesundheit, fragt nach Zugehörigkeiten und arbeitet die jeweils spezifische Prägung durch transnationale Migration und Alter heraus. Die Fallstudie erläutert zunächst Kontexte und Theorien zu Migration und Alter(n), bevor die beiden Felder gestützt durch empirische Ergebnisse analytisch verbunden werden.
Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war es, den Zusammenhang zwischen der Implementierung von CRM-Prozessen und der Kundenzufriedenheit zu analysieren. Unsere Untersuchung ist einigen grundsätzlichen Beschränkunfen unterworfen. CRM ist immer noch ein relativ junges Forschungsgebiet, dessen Prozesse sich im Zeitablauf mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit noch weiterentwickeln werden. Manche Praktiken werden als ineffektiv identifiziert und verworfen werden; andere existierende Prozesse werden eine Verbesserung erfahren. Es ist zudem zu erwarten, dass neue Prozesse und Aktivitäten entwickelt und eingeführt werden. Als Folge dieser Entwicklungen ist es möglich, dass die hier berichtete Wirkung auf die Kundenzufriedenheit durch die Implementierung von CRM-Prozessen sich im Laufe der Zeit ebenfalls ändern wird. Ein interessanter Forschungsansatz wäre daher die Beobachtung dieser Evolution im Zeitablauf.
Darüber hinaus muss in dieser Studie beachtet werden, dass die Kundenzufriedenzeit lediglich ein vorökonomisches Ziel des CRM ist. Einzelne Investitionen in eine bestehende Geschäftsbeziehung müssen anhand der Wertigkeit des Kunden für das Unvernehmen vorgenommen werden.Bestehen ferner keine Alternativen zum bisherigen Anbieter, so ist es ökonomisch nicht sinnvoll, Ressourcen zur Steigerung der Kundenzufriedenheit einzusetzen, da ein Wechsel des Anbieters unwahrscheinlich ist.
Schließlich nutzten wir für die vorliegende Studie Skalen zur Einschätzung der Einstellungen der Kunden durch die Unternehmen. Da dieses Vorgehen möglichst genaue Beurteilungen erfordert, kann es sein, dass die Daten gewisse Verzerrungen aufweisen. Zukünftige Forschungsansätze könnten die Studie durch eine ergänzende Einschätzung der Kunden zur Kreuzvalidierung sinnvoll erweitern.

Studenten kann es zum Selbststudium dienen oder den Stoff von Lehrveranstaltungen ergänzen.
Die Alterungsbeständigkeit von geschirmten Kabeln und Kontaktpaaren gewinnt angesichts des zunehmenden Einsatzes elektronischer softwarebasierter Steuerungen in Transportmitteln an Relevanz. Elektro- und Hybridantriebe sowie die Implementierung von Fahrassistenzsystemen bis hin zu autonom fahrenden Fahrzeugen führen zu komplexen Kabelbäumen mit einer großen Zahl von geschirmten Kabeln und Steckverbindern.
Um die Stabilität von Kontaktsystemen hinsichtlich ihrer Stabilität zu prüfen, werden Hochspannungskabel unterschiedlicher Hersteller und Dimensionierung für den Einsatz in Hybridfahrzeugen untersucht. Diese wurden mit Modellsteckern versehen, die die Schimung kontaktierten und hinreichend gewährleisteten.
Impedanz und Schirmwirkungsdämpfung wurden an thermisch belasteten Kabeln und Kontaktpaaren vergleichend zu Neuteilen untersucht. Der Einfluss der in Anlehnung an die LV 214 induzierten thermischen Alterung auf das frequenzabhängige Übertragungsprofil sowie den Gesamtstreuverlust wurde messtechnisch ermittelt. Zusätzlich wurden die Alterungseffekte an den Leitungsmaterialien mittels moderner bildgebender Analytik dokumentiert.
Analog-/Mixed-Signal (AMS) design verification is one of the most challenging and time consuming tasks of todays complex system on chip (SoC) designs. In contrast to digital system design, AMS designers have to deal with a continuous state space of conservative quantities, highly nonlinear relationships, non-functional influences, etc. enlarging the number of possibly critical scenarios to infinity. In this special session we demonstrate the verification of functional properties using simulative and formal methods. We combine different approaches including automated abstraction and refinement of mixed-level models, state-space discretization as well as affine arithmetic. To reach sufficient verification coverage with reasonable time and effort, we use enhanced simulation schemes to avoid conventional simulation drawbacks.
This book presents emerging trends in the evolution of service-oriented and enterprise architectures. New architectures and methods of both business and IT are integrating services to support mobility systems, internet of things, ubiquitous computing, collaborative and adaptive business processes, big data, and cloud ecosystems. They inspire current and future digital strategies and create new opportunities for the digital transformation of next digital products and services. The evolution of Services Oriented Architectures (SOA) presents many challenges due to their complex, dynamic and heterogeneous nature. We describe how SOA design principles can facilitate SOA evolvability and examine several approaches to support SOA evolution. SOA evolution approaches can be classified based on the level of granularity they address, namely, service code level, service interaction level and model level. We also discuss emerging trends, such as microservices and knowledge-based support, which can enhance the evolution of future SOA systems.
The digital transformation of our society changes the way we live, work, learn, communicate, and collaborate. The digitization of software-intensive products and services is enabled basically by four megatrends: Cloud computing, big data mobile systems, and social technologies. This disruptive change interacts with all information processes and systems that are important business enablers for the current digital transformation. The internet of things, social collaboration systems for adaptive case management, mobility systems and services for big data in cloud services environments are emerging to support intelligent user-centered and social community systems. The Internet of Things (IoT), enterprise social networks, adaptive case management, mobility systems, analytics for big data, and cloud services environments are emerging to support smart connected products and services and the digital transformation. Biological metaphors of living and adaptable ecosystems with service oriented enterprise architectures provide the foundation for self-optimizing and resilient run-time environments for intelligent business services and related distributed information systems. We are investigating mechanisms for flexible adaptation and evolution for the next digital enterprise architecture systems in the context of the digital transformation. Our aim is to support flexibility and agile transformation for both business and related enterprise systems through adaptation and dynamical evolution of digital enterprise architectures. The present research paper investigates mechanisms for decision case management in the context of multi-perspective explorations of enterprise services and Internet of Things architectures by extending original enterprise architecture reference models with state of art elements for architectural engineering for the digitization and architectural decision support.
An enormous amount of data in the context of business processes is stored as images. They contain valuable information for business process management. Up to now this data had to be integrated manually into the business process. By advances of capturing it is possible to extract information from an increasing number of images. Therefore, we systematically investigate the potentials of Image Mining for business process management by a literature research and an in-depth analysis of the business process lifecycle. As a first step to evaluate our research, we developed a prototype for recovering process model information from drawings using Rapidminer.

Digitization is more than using digital technologies to transfer data and perform computations and tasks. Digitization embraces disruptive effects of digital technologies on economy and society. To capture these effects, two perspectives are introduced, the product and the value-creation perspective. In the product perspective, digitization enables the transition from material, static products to interactive and configurable services. In the value-creation perspective, digitization facilitates the transition from centralized, isolated models of value creation, to bidirectional, co-creation oriented approaches of value creation.
The Internet of Things, enterprise social networks, adaptive case management, mobility systems, analytics for big data, and cloud services environments are emerging to support smart connected products and services and the digital transformation. Biological metaphors of living and adaptable ecosystems provide the logical foundation for self-optimizing and resilient run-time environments for intelligent business services and related distributed information systems with service-oriented enterprise architectures. We are investigating mechanisms for flexible adaptation and evolution for the next digital enterprise architecture systems in the context of the digital transformation. Our aim is to support flexibility and agile transformation for both business and related enterprise systems through adaptation and dynamical evolution of digital enterprise architectures. The present research paper investigates digital transformations of business and IT and integrates fundamental mappings between adaptable digital enterprise architectures and service-oriented information systems. We are putting a spotlight with the example domain – Internet of Things.
