Functionally impaired people have problems with choosing and finding the right clothing. So, they need help in their daily life to wash and manage the clothing. The goal of this work is to support the user by giving recommendations to choose the right clothing, to find the clothing and how to wash the clothing. The idea behind eKlarA is to generate a gateway based system that uses sensors to identify the clothing and their state in the clothing cycle. The clothing cycle consists of (one and more) closet, laundry basket and washing machine in one or several places. The gateway uses the information about the clothing, weather and calendar to support the user in the different steps of the clothing cycle. This allows to give more freedom to the functionally impaired people in their daily life.
Today 40 Gbps is in development at IEEE 802.3bq over four pair balanced cabling. In this paper, we describe a transmission experiment of 25 Gbps enabling either a single pair transmission of 25 Gbps over a 30 meter balanced cabling channel, or a 100 Gbps transmission via a four-pair balanced channel. A scalable matrix modeling tool is introduced which allows the prediction of transmission characteristics of a channel taking mode conversion into account . We applied this tool to characterize PCB-channels including the magnetics and PCB for a four-pair 100 Gbps transmission. We evaluated prototype cables and connecting hardware for frequencies up to 2 GHz and beyond. Finally we investigated possible line encoding schemes and provide measurement results of a transmission over 30 m with a data rate of 25 Gbps per twisted pair.

Size and cost of a switched mode power supply can be reduced by increasing the switching frequency. The maximum switching frequency and the maximum input voltage range, respectively, is limited by the minimum propagated on-time pulse, which is mainly determined by the level shifter speed. At switching frequencies above 10 MHz, a voltage conversion with an input voltage range up to 50 V and output voltages below 5 V requires an on-time of a pulse width modulated signal of less than 5 ns. This cannot be achieved with conventional level shifters. This paper presents a level shifter circuit, which controls an NMOS power FET on a high-voltage domain up to 50 V. The level shifter was implemented as part of a DCDC converter in a 180 nm BiCMOS technology. Experimental results confirm a propagation delay of 5 ns and on-time pulses of less than 3 ns. An overlapping clamping structure with low parasitic capacitances in combination with a high-speed comparator makes the level shifter also very robust against large coupling currents during high-side transitions as fast as 20 V/ns, verified by measurements. Due to the high dv/dt, capacitive coupling currents can be two orders of magnitude larger than the actual signal current. Depending on the conversion ratio, the presented level shifter enables an increase of the switching frequency for multi-MHz converters towards 100 MHz. It supports high input voltages up to 50 V and it can be applied also to other high-speed applications.
Today’s cars are characterized by many functional variants. There are many reasons for the underlying variability, from the adaptation to diverse markets to different technical aspects, which are based on a cross platform reuse of software functions. Inevitably, this variability is reflected in the model-based automotive software development. A modeling language, which is widely used for modeling embedded software in the automotive industry, is MATLAB/Simulink. There are concepts facing the high demand for a systematic handling of variability in Simulinkmodels. However, not every concept is suitable for every automotive application. In order to present a classification of concepts for modeling variability in Simulink, this paper first has to determine the relevant use cases for variant handling in modelbased automotive software development. Existing concepts for modeling variability in Simulink will then be presented before being classified in relation to the previously determined use cases.
A configuration-management-database driven approach for fabric-process specification and automation
(2014)
In this paper we describe an approach that integrates a Configuration- Management-Database into fabric-process specification and automation in order to consider different conditions regarding to cloud-services. By implementing our approach, the complexity of fabric processes gets reduced. We developed a prototype by using formal prototyping principles as research methods and integrated the Configuration-Management-Database Command into the Workflow- Management-System Activiti. We used this prototype to evaluate our approach. We implemented three different fabric-processes and show that by using our approach the complexity of these three fabric-processes gets reduced.
A millimeter-wave power amplifier concept in an advanced silicon germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS technology is presented. The goal of the concept is to investigate the impact of physical limitations of the used heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT) on the performance of a 77 GHz power amplifier. High current behavior, collectorbase breakdown and transistor saturation can be forced with the presented design. The power amplifier is manufactured in an advanced SiGe BiCMOS technology at Infineon Technologies AG with a maximum transit frequency fT of around 250 GHz for npn HBT’s [1]. The simulation results of the power amplifier show a saturated output power of 16 dBm at a power added efficiency of 13%. The test chip is designed for a supply voltage of 3.3 V and requires a chip size of 1.448 x 0.930 mm².
Model-guided Therapy and Surgical Workflow Systems are two interrelated research fields, which have been developed separately in the last years. To make full use of both technologies, it is necessary to integrate them and connect them to Hospital Information Systems. We propose a framework for integration of Model-guided Therapy in Hospital Information Systems based on the Electronic Medical Record, and a taskbased Workflow Management System, which is suitable for clinical end users. Two prototypes - one based on Business Process Modeling Language, one based on the serum-board - are presented. From the experience with these prototypes, we developed a novel personalized visualization system for Surgical Workflows and Model-guided Therapy. Key challenges for further development are automated situation detection and a common communication infrastructure.
This paper presents a new broadband antenna for satellite communications. It describes the procedure involved in the design of a microstrip antenna array and its multi-level passive feed network that together yield circular polarization and the necessary gain to be used in an earth-satellite link. The designed antenna is notable for its large bandwidth, circular polarization, high gain and small dimensions.
This paper is a brief review on the book ‘Capital in the Twenty-First Century’ by the French scholar Thomas Piketty. The book has started a new debate about inequality and capital taxation in Europe. It provides interesting empirical facts and develops a theory of the functioning of capitalist economies. However, I personally think the book is less convincing than recognized in the public debate. The demonstrated theory of economic growth in the book is elusive and lacks a psychological and behavioral underpinning. In fact, I do think that the increasing inequality and economic divergence are caused by capitalism but the psychological and behavioral aspects of humans are of similar or greater significance. Therefore, Piketty’s argument does not stimulate an open and scientifically founded debate in all aspects.
This white paper builds a new financial theory of euro area sovereign bond markets under stress. The theory explains the abnormal bond pricing and increasing spreads during the recent market turmoil. We find that the strong disconnect of bond spreads from the respective bonds’ underlying fundamental values in 2010 was triggered by an increase in asymmetric information and weak reputation of government policies. Both factors cause a normal bond market to switch into a crisis mode. Finally, those markets are prone to self-fulfilling bubbles in which the economic effects are amplified by herding behaviour arising from animal spirits. Altogether, this produces contagious effects and multiple equilibria. Thus, we argue that government bond markets in a monetary union are more fragile and vulnerable to liquidity and solvency crises. Consequently, the systemic mispricing of sovereign debt creates more macroeconomic instability and bubbles in the euro area than in a single country. In other words, financial markets are partly blind to national default risks in a currency union. Therefore, the current European institutional framework puts the wrong incentives in place and needs structural changes soon. To tackle the root causes we suggest more market incentives via consistent rules, pre-emptive austerity measures in good economic times, and a resolution scheme for heavily indebted countries. In summary, our paper enhances the bond market theory and provides new insights into the recent bond market turmoil in Europe.
A vapor permeation processes for the separation of aromatic compounds from aliphatic compounds
(2014)
A number of rubbery and glassy membranes have been prepared and evaluated in vapor permeation experiments for separation of aromatic/aliphatic mixtures, using 5/95 (wt:wt) toluene/methylcyclohexane (MCH) as a model solution. Candidate membranes that met the required toluene/MCH selectivity of ≥ 10 were identified. The stability of the candidate membranes was tested by cycling the experiment between higher toluene concentrations and the original 5 wt% level. The best membrane produced has a toluene permeance of 280 gpu and a toluene/MCH selectivity of 13 when tested with a vapor feed of the model mixture at its boiling point and at atmospheric pressure. When a series of related membrane materials are compared, there is a sharp trade-off between membrane permeance and membrane selectivity. A process design study based on the experimental results was conducted. The best preliminary membrane design uses 45% of the energy of a conventional distillation process.
This paper compares the influence a video self-avatar and a lack of a visual representation of a body have on height estimation when standing at a virtual visual cliff. A height estimation experiment was conducted using a custom augmented reality Oculus Rift hardware and software prototype also described in this paper. The results show a consistency with previous research demonstrating that the presence of a visual body influences height estimates, just as it has been shown to influence distance estimates and affordance estimates.
In this work, a web-based software architecture and framework for management and diagnosis of large amounts of medical data in an ophthalmologic reading center is proposed. Data management for multi-center studies requires merging of standing data and repeatedly gathered clinical evidence such as vital signs and raw data. If ophthalmologic questions are involved the data acquisition is often provided by non-medical staff at the point of care or a study center, whereas the medical finding is mostly provided by an ophthalmologist in a specialized reading center. The study data such as participants, cohorts and measured values are administrated at a single data center for the entire study. Since a specialized reading center maintains several studies, the medical staff must learn the different data administration for the different data center. With respect to the increasing number and sizes of clinical studies, two aspects must be considered. At first, an efficient software framework is required to support the data management, processing and diagnosis by medical experts at the reading center. In the second place, this software needs a standardized user-interface that has not to be trained/taylore /adapted for each new study. Furthermore different aspects of quality and security controls have to be included. Therefore, the objective of this work is to establish a multi purpose ophthalmologic reading center, which can be connected to different data centers via configurable data interfaces in order to treat various topics simultaneously.
We investigated the excitation modes of the light-harvesting protein phycocyanin (PC) from Thermosynechococcus vulcanus in the crystalline state using UV and near-infrared Raman spectroscopy. The spectra revealed the absence of a hydrogen out-of-plane wagging (HOOP) mode in the PC trimer, which suggests that the HOOP mode is activated in the intact PC rod, while it is not active in the PC trimer. Furthermore, in the PC trimer an intense mode at 984 cm−1 is assigned to the C–C stretching vibration while the mode at 454 cm−1 is likely due to ethyl group torsion. In contrast, in the similar chromophore phytochromobilin the C5,10,15-D wag mode at 622 cm−1 does not come from a downshift of the HOOP. Additionally, the absence of modes between 1200 and 1300 cm−1 rules out functional monomerization. A correlation between phycocyanobilin (PCB) and phycoerythrobilin (PEB) suggests that the PCB cofactors of the PC trimer appear in a conformation similar to that of PEB. The conformation of the PC rod is consistent with that of the allophycocyanin (APC) trimer, and thus excitonic flow is facilitated between these two independent light harvesting compounds. This excitonic flow from the PC rod to APC appears to be modulated by the vibration channels during HOOP wagging, C = C stretching, and the N–H rocking in-plan vibration.
The spreading area of cells has been shown to play a central role in the determination of cell fate and tissue morphogenesis; however, a clear understanding of how spread cell area is determined is still lacking. The observation that cell area and force generally increase with substrate rigidity suggests that cell area is dictated mechanically, by means of a force-balance between the cell and the substrate. A simple mechanical model, corroborated by experimental measurements of cell area and force is presented to analyze the temporal force balance between the cell and the substrate during spreading. The cell is modeled as a thin elastic disc that is actively pulled by lamellipodia protrusions at the cell front. The essential molecular mechanisms of the motor activity at the cell front, including, actin polymerization, adhesion kinetics, and the actin retrograde flow, are accounted for and used to predict the dynamics of cell spreading on elastic substrates; simple, closed-form expressions for the evolution of cell size and force are derived. Time-resolved, traction force microscopy, combined with measurements of cell area are performed to investigate the simultaneous variations of cell size and force. We find that cell area and force increase simultaneously during spreading but the force develops with an apparent delay relative to the increase in cell area. We demonstrate that this may reflect the strain-stiffening property of the cytoskeleton. We further demonstrate that the radial cell force is a concave function of spreading speed and that this may reflect the strengthening of cell–substrate adhesions during spreading.

Biological metaphors of living adaptable ecosystems provide the logical foundation for self-optimizing and self-healing run-time environments for intelligent adaptable business services and related information systems with service-oriented enterprise architectures. The present research in progress work investigates mechanisms for adaptable enterprise architectures for the development of service-oriented ecosystems with integrated technologies like Semantic Technologies, Web Services, Cloud Computing and Big Data Management. With a large and diverse set of ecosystem services with different owners, our scenario of service-based SmartLife ecosystems can pose challenges in their development, and more importantly, for maintenance and software evolution. Our research explores the use of knowledge modeling using ontologies and flexible metamodels for adaptable enterprise architectures to support program comprehension for software engineers during maintenance and evolution tasks of service-based applications. Our previous reference enterprise architecture model ESARC -- Enterprise Services Architecture Reference Cube -- and the Open Group SOA Ontology was extended to support agile semantic analysis, program comprehension and software evolution for a SmartLife applications scenario. The Semantic Browser is a semantic search tool that was developed to provide knowledge-enhanced investigation capabilities for service-oriented applications and their architectures.

Nowadays the software development plays an important role in the entire value chain in production machine and plant engineering. An important component for rapid development of high quality software is the virtual commissioning. The real machine is described on the basis of simulation models. Therefore, the control software can be verified at an early stage using the simulation models. Since production machines are produced highly individual or in very small series, the challenge of virtual commissioning is to reduce the effort to the development of simulation models. Therefore, a systematic reuse of the simulation models and the control software for different variants of a machine is essential for an economic use. This necessarily requires a consideration of the variability which may occur between the production machines. This paper analyzes the question of how to systematically deal with the software-related variability in the context of virtual commissioning. For this purpose, first the characteristics of the virtual commissioning and variability handling are considered. Subsequently, the requirements to a so-called variant infrastructure for virtual commissioning are analyzed and possible solutions are discussed.
Allyls
(2014)
This chapter addresses the importance and usage of the commercially low volume thermoset plastics group known as allyls. The three significant sub-elements of this group are poly(diallylphthalates), poly(diallylisophthalates), and poly(allyldiglycol carbonate). Chemistry, processing, and properties are also described. Allyl polymers are synthesized by radical polymerizations of allyl monomers that usually do not produce high-molecular-mass macromolecules. Therefore, only a few specific monomers can produce thermosetting materials. Diallyldiglycolcarbonate (CR-39) and diallylphthalates are the most significant examples that have considerably improved our everyday life.
Ambush Marketing im Sport : wie Nicht-Sponsoren Sportveranstaltungen zur Markenkommunikation nutzen
(2014)
Ambush marketing in sports
(2014)
A sports event organizer sells exclusive marketing rights for his event to official sponsors, who, in return, acquire exclusive options to utilize the event for their own advertising purposes. Ambush marketing is the practice by companies of using their own marketing, particularly marketing communications activities, to create an impression of an association with the event to the event audience, although the companies in question have no legal or only underprivileged or non-exclusive marketing rights for this event sponsored by third parties. So, the objective of ambush marketing is to benefit from the success of sports sponsorship without having the duties of an official sponsor.
It is fine line between creative marketing communication and infringing on sponsorship rights. From the perspective of the event organizers and sports sponsors ambush marketing represents an understandable threat, while from the perspective of the ambushers it offers the opportunity to reach the target audience in an attractive environment and at affordable cost. The paper defines and structures the phenomenon of ambush marketing and analyses the impacts of ambush marketing in sports. The results of an empirical study on the effects of ambush marketing in the frame of the FIFA Soccer World cup are presented and discussed.
DMOS transistors are often subject to high power dissipation and thus substantial self-heating. This limits their safe operating area because very high device temperatures can lead to thermal runaway and subsequent destruction. Because the peak temperature usually occurs only in a small region in the device, it is possible to redistribute part of the dissipated power from the hot region to the cooler device areas. In this way, the peak temperature is reduced, whereas the total power dissipation is still the same. Assuming that a certain temperature must not be exceeded for safe operation, the improved device is now capable of withstanding higher amounts of energy with an unchanged device area. This paper presents two simple methods to redistribute the power dissipation density and thus lower the peak device temperature. The presented methods only require layout changes. They can easily be applied to modern power technologies without the need of process modifications. Both methods are implemented in test structures and investigated by simulations and measurements.
IGBT modules with anti-parallel FWDs are widely used in inductive load switching power applications, such as motor drive applications. Nowadays there is a continuous effort to increase the efficiency of such systems by decreasing their switching losses. This paper addresses the problems arising in the turn-on process of an IGBT working in hard-switching conditions. A method is proposed which achieves – contrary to most other approaches – a high switching speed and, at the same time, a low peak reverse-recovery current. This is done by applying an improved gate current waveform that is briefly lowered during the turn-on process. The proposed method achieves low switching losses. Its effectiveness is demonstrated by experimental results with IGBT modules for 600V and 1200V.
There are several intra-operative use cases which require the surgeon to interact with medical devices. I used the Leap Motion Controller as input device for three use-cases: 2D-interaction (e.g. advancing EPR data), selection of a value (e.g. room illumination brightness) and an application point and click scenario. I evaluated the Palm Mouse as the most suitable gesture solution to coordinate the mouse and advise to use the implementation using all fingers to perform a click. This small case study introduces the implementations and methods that result those recommendations.
This paper provides a quantitative approach to measuring the effectiveness of ambush marketing by using Google data. To our knowledge, it is one of the first studies that develop an empirical approach that directly measures the attention effect of ambush marketing in sports. The new data consists of 14 ambushers (treatment group) and 26 official sponsors (control group) and covers the time period of 2004 to 2012. These firms conducted marketing activities during the past football World Cups and European Championships. The innovation in our paper is the measurement method of attention by means of Google. The results are as follows: First ambush marketing increases product attention significantly. Second the product awareness of ambushers is greater or the same to that of official sponsors. Finally, we demonstrate that ambush marketing has positive impacts on the company's performance. Overall, we conclude that Google provide new insights for the analysis of ambush marketing.
Applied mathematical theory for monetary-fiscal interaction in a supranational monetary union
(2014)
I utilize a differentiable dynamical system á la Lotka-Voletrra and explain monetary and fiscal interaction in a supranational monetary union. The paper demonstrates an applied mathematical approach that provides useful insights about the interaction mechanisms in theoretical economics in general and a monetary union in particular. I find that a common central bank is necessary but not sufficient to tackle the new interaction problems in a supranational monetary union, such as the free-riding behaviour of fiscal policies. Moreover, I show that upranational institutions, rules or laws are essential to mitigate violations of decentralized fiscal policies.
Knowledge transfer is very important to our knowledge-based society and many approaches have been proposed to describe this transfer. However, these approaches take a rather abstract view on knowledge transfer, which makes implementation difficult. In order to address this issue, we introduce a layered model for knowledge transfer that structures the individual steps of knowledge transfer in more detail. This paper gives a description of the process and also an example of the application of the layered model for knowledge transfer. The example is located in the area of business process modelling. Business processes contain the important knowledge describing the procedures of the company to produce products and services. Knowledge transfer is the fundamental basis in the modelling and usage of Business processes, which makes it an interesting use case for the layered model for knowledge transfer.
The recent years and especially the Internet have changed the ways in which data is stored. It is now common to store data in the form of transactions, together with ist creation time-stamp. These transactions can often be attributed to Logical units, e.g., all transactions that belong to one customer. These groups, we refer to them as data sequences, have a more complex structure than tuple-based data. This makes it more difficult to find discriminatory patterns for classification purposes. However, the complex structure potentially enables us to track behaviour and its change over the course of time. This is quite interesting, especially in the e-commerce area, in which classification of a sequence of customer actions is still a challenging task for data miners. However, before standard algorithms such as Decision Trees, Neural Nets, Naive Bayes or Bayesian Belief Networks can be applied on sequential data, preparations are required in order to capture the information stored within the sequences. Therefore, this work presents a systematic approach on how to reveal sequence patterns among data and how to construct powerful features out of the primitive sequence attributes. This is achieved by sequence aggregation and the incorporation of time dimension into the feature construction step. The proposed algorithm is described in detail and applied on a real-life data set, which demonstrates the ability of the proposed algorithm to boost the classification performance of well-known data mining algorithms for binary classification tasks.
Prior studies ascribed people’s poor performance in dealing with basic systems concepts to different causes. While results indicate that, among other things, domain specific experience and familiarity with the problem context play a role in this stock-flow-(SF-)performance, this has not yet been fully clarified. In this article, we present an experiment that examines the role of educational background in SF-performance. We hypothesize that SF-performance increases when the problem context is embedded in the problem solver’s knowledge domain, indicated by educational background. Using the square wave pattern and the sawtooth pattern tasks from the initial study by Booth Sweeney and Sterman (2000), we design two additional cover stories for the former, the Vehicle story from the engineering domain and the Application story from the business domain, next to the original Bathtub story. We then test the three sets of questions on business students. Results mainly support our hypothesis. Interestingly, participants even do better on a more complex behavioral pattern from their knowledge domain than on a simpler pattern from more distant domains. Although these findings have to be confirmed by further studies, they contribute both to the methodology of future surveys and the context familiarity discussion.
Bootstrap circuits are mainly used for supplying a gate driver circuit to provide the gate overdrive voltage for a high-side NMOS transistor. The required charge has to be provided by a bootstrap capacitor which is often too large for integration if an acceptable voltage dip at the capacitor has to be guaranteed. Three options of an area efficient bootstrap circuit for a high side driver with an output stage of two NMOS transistors are proposed. The key idea is that the main bootstrap capacitor is supported by a second bootstrap capacitor, which is charged to a higher voltage and connected when the gate driver turns on. A high voltage swing at the second capacitor leads to a high charge allocation. Both bootstrap capacitors require up to 70% less area compared to a conventional bootstrap circuit. This enables compact power management systems with fewer discrete components and smaller die size. A calculation guideline for optimum bootstrap capacitor sizing is given. The circuit was manufactured in a 180nm high-voltage BiCMOS technology as part of a high-voltage gate driver. Measurements confirm the benefit of high-voltage charge storing. The fully integrated bootstrap circuit including two stacked 75.8pF and 18.9pF capacitors results in a voltage dip lower than 1V. This matches well with the theory of the calculation guideline.
As "the most international company on earth", DHL Express promised to deliver packages between almost any pair of countries within a defined time-frame. To fulfill this promise, the company had introduced a set of global business and technology standards. While standardization had many advantages (improving service for multinational customers, faster response to changes in import/export regulations, sharing of best practices etc.), it created impediments to local innovation and responsiveness in DHL Express' network of 220 countries/territories. Reconciling standardization-innovation tradeoffs is a critical management issue for global companies in the digital economy.
This case describes one large, successful company's approach to the tradeoff of standardization versus innovation.
In the period from the 1950s to 2013, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved 1346 new molecular entities (NMEs) or new biologics entities (NBEs). On average, the approval rate was 20 NMEs per year. In the past 40 years, the number of new drugs launched into the market increased slightly from 15 NMEs in the 1970s to 25–30 NMEs since the 1990s. The highest number of new drugs approved by FDA was in 1996 and 1997, which might be related to the enactment of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) in 1993.
