In vitro models of human adipose tissue may serve as beneficial alternatives to animal models to study basic biological processes, identify new drug targets, and as soft tissue implants. With this approach, we aimed to evaluate adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) and mature adipocytes (MA) comparatively for the application in the in vitro setup of adipose tissue constructs to imitate native adipose tissue physiology. We used human primary MAs and human ASCs, differentiated for 14 days, and encapsulated them in collagen type I hydrogels to build up a three-dimensional (3D) adipose tissue model. The maintenance of the models was analyzed after seven days based on a viability staining. Further, the expression of the adipocyte specific protein perilipin A and the release of leptin and glycerol were evaluated. Gene transcription profiles of models based on dASCs and MAs were analyzed with regard to native adipose tissue. Compared to MAs, dASCs showed an immature differentiation state. Further, gene transcription of MAs suggests a behavior closer to native tissue in terms of angiogenesis, which supports MAs as preferred cell type. In contrast to native adipose tissue, genes of de novo lipogenesis and tissue remodeling were upregulated in the in vitro attempts.
An important shift in software delivery is the definition of a cloud service as an independently deployable unit by following the microservices architectural style. Container virtualization facilitates development and deployment by ensuring independence from the runtime environment. Thus, cloud services are built as container based systems - a set of containers that control the lifecycle of software and middleware components. However, using containers leads to a new paradigm for service development and operation: Self service environments enable software developers to deploy and operate container based systems on their own - you build it, you run it. Following this approach, more and more operational aspects are transferred towards the responsibility of software developers. In this work, we propose a concept for self-adaptive cloud services based on container virtualization in line with the microservices architectural style and present a model-based approach that assists software developers in building these services. Based on operational models specified by developers, the mechanisms required for self-adaptation are automatically generated. As a result, each container automatically adapts itself in a reactive, decentralized manner. We evaluate a prototype which leverages the emerging TOSCA standard to specify operational behavior in a portable manner.
Angesichts großer globaler Herausforderungen wie z.B. dem Klimawandel befindet sich die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit im Wandel und sieht sich zunehmend der Frage ihrer Wirksamkeit gegenübergestellt. Dieser Beitrag diskutiert, welchen Beitrag Sustainable Entrepreneurship zu einer Verbesserung ihrer Wirksamkeit leisten kann. Im Rahmen dessen wird zunächst die Ethik Albert Schweitzers und ihre Bezüge zu Konzepten der Nachhaltigen Entwicklung beleuchtet und im nächsten Schritt kriteriengeleitet diskutiert, inwieweit Albert Schweitzer als Prototyp eines Sustainable Entrepreneurs bezeichnet werden kann und was dies für die Konzeption und Ausrichtung der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit bedeuten könnte. Ebenso wird diskutiert, inwieweit Nachhaltige Entwicklung, insb. die Nachhaltigkeitsziele der Vereinten Nationen (SDG) als Orientierungsrahmen für die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit dienen kann. Ausgehend von dem Befund, dass für Sustainable Entrepreneurs die Finanzierung ihrer Aktivitäten ein erheblicher Engpassfaktor darstellt, wird diskutiert, inwiefern Sustainable Finance-Instrumente dazu beitragen können, die Finanzierungsbedingungen für Sustainable Entrepreneurs und damit den Impact ihrer Aktivitäten zu verbessern. Abschließend wird anhand eines aktuellen Fallbeispiels der Impact aufgezeigt, den Sustainable Entrepreneurs, die nach dem Vorbild Albert Schweitzers agieren, erzielen können.
On-chip metallization, especially in modern integrated BCD technologies, is often subject to high current densities and pronounced temperature cycles due to heat dissipation from power switches like LDMOS transistors. This paper continues the work on a sensor concept where small sense lines are embedded in the metallization layers above the active area of a switching LDMOS transistor. The sensors show a significant resistance change that correlates with the number of power cycles. Furthermore, influences of sense line layer, geometry and the dissipated energy are shown. In this paper, the focus lies on a more detailed analysis of the observed change in sense line resistance.
Today, virtualizing pharma R&D is increasingly related with data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), technologies that have been developed by software companies outside the healthcare sector. The process of virtualizing pharma R&D is closely related to the technological advancements that result in the generation of large data sets ranging from genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, medical imaging, IoT wearables and large clinical trials, making it necessary for pharma companies to find new ways to store and ultimately analyze information. As a consequence, pharma companies are experimenting with AI in R&D ranging from in-silico drug design to clinical trail participants identification or dosage error reduction.

Durch Organisationslernen passen sich Organisationen an veränderte Umweltanforderungen (Digitalisierung, politische Reformen, usw.) an. Organisationen können die Lernfähigkeit erhöhen, indem sie ihre dynamischen Fähigkeiten durch eine geringe Arbeitsteilung stärken, ihren Absorptionsprozess von Wissen hinterfragen, und strukturelle und zeitliche Ambidextrie schaffen. Sie können sich am Leitbild der lernenden Organisation orientieren und flache Organisationsstrukturen sowie Teamarbeit fördern. Insbesondere für öffentliche Verwaltungen, die derzeit nicht ausreichend lernfähig sind, bietet das Organisationslernen sinnvolle Ansatzpunkte.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effect of psychological contract breach on the relationship between job insecurity and counterproductive workplace behavior (CWB) and the moderating effect of employment status in this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from 212 supervisor–subordinate dyads in a large Chinese state-owned air transportation group. AMOS 17.0 software was used to examine the hypothesized predictions and the theoretical model.
Findings – The results showed that psychological contract breach partially mediates the effect of job insecurity on CWB, including organizational counterproductive workplace behavior and interpersonal counterproductive workplace behavior. In addition, the relationships between job insecurity, psychological contract breach and CWB differ significantly between permanent workers and contract workers.
Originality/value – The present study provides a new insight into explaining the linkage between job insecurity and negative work behaviors as well as suggestions to managers on minimizing the harmful effects of job insecurity.
Polyurethane-bases block copolymers (TPCUs) are block-copolymers with systematically varied soft and hard segments. They have been suggested to serve as material for chondral implants in joint regeneration. Such applications may require the adhesion of chondrocytes to the implant surface, facilitating cell growth while keeping their phenotype. Thus, aims of this work were (1) to modify the surface of soft biostable polyurethane-based model implants (TPCU and TSiPCU) with high-molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) using an optimized multistep strategy of immobilization, and (2) to evaluate bioactivity of the modified TPCUs in vitro. Our results show no cytotoxic potential of the TPCUs. HAbioactive molecules (Mw =700kDa) were immobilized onto the polyurethane surface via polyethylenimine (PEI) spacers, and modifications were confirmed by several characterization methods. Tests with porcine chondrocytes indicated the potential of the TPCU-HA for inducing enhanced cell proliferation.
In this paper we describe an interactive web-based visual analysis tool for Formula one races. It first provides an overview about all races on a yearly basis in a calendar-like representation. From this starting point, races can be selected and visually inspected in detail. We support a dynamic race position diagram as well as a more detailed lap times line plot for showing the drivers’ lap times in comparison. Many interaction techniques are supported like selections, filtering, highlighting, color coding, or details-on demand. We illustrate the usefulness of our visualization tool by applying it to a Formula one dataset while we describe the different dynamic visual racing patterns for a number of selected races and drivers.
Mystery shopping (MS) is a widely used tool to monitor the quality of service and personal selling. In consultative retail settings, assessments of mystery shoppers are supposed to capture the most relevant aspects of sales people’s service and sales behavior. Given the important conclusions drawn by managers from MS results, the standard assumption seems to be that assessments of mystery shoppers are strongly related to customer satisfaction and sales performance. However, surprisingly scant empirical evidence supports this assumption. We test the relationship between MS assessments and customer evaluations and sales performance with large-scale data from three service retail chains. Surprisingly, we do not find asubstantial correlation. The results show that mystery shoppers are not good proxies for real customers. While MS assessments are not related to sales, our findings confirm the established correlation between customer satisfaction measurements and sales results.
In recent years, the parallel computing community has shown increasing interest in leveraging cloud resources for executing parallel applications. Clouds exhibit several fundamental features of economic value, like on-demand resource provisioning and a pay-per-use model. Additionally, several cloud providers offer their resources with significant discounts; however, possessing limited availability. Such volatile resources are an auspicious opportunity to reduce the costs arising from computations, thus achieving higher cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose a cost model for quantifying the monetary costs of executing parallel applications in cloud environments, leveraging volatile resources. Using this cost model, one is able to determine a configuration of a cloud-based parallel system that minimizes the total costs of executing an application.
Information and communication technologies support telemedicine to lower health access barriers and to provide better health care. While the potential in Active Assisted Living (AAL) is increasing, it is difficult to evaluate its benefits for the user, and it requires coordinated actions to launch it. The European Commission’s action plan 2012–2020 provides a roadmap to patient empowerment and healthcare, to link up devices and technologies, and to invest in research towards the personalized medicine of the future. As a quickly developing area in medicine, telemonitoring is a demanding field in research and development. Telemonitoring is an essential component of personalized medicine, where health providers can obtain precise information on outcare or chronic patients to improve diagnosis and therapy and also help healthy persons with prevention support. Telemonitoring combines mobile and wearable devices with the personal AAL home environment, a private or (partly) supervised home, most often called ’smart home’. The focus of this workshop is on new hardware and software solutions specifically designed to be applicable in AAL environments to empower patients. This workshop presents system-oriented solutions covering wearable and AAL-embedded devices, computer science infrastructure both at the users’ and the medical premises, to handle the data and decision support systems to support diagnose and treatment.
Integrating tools and applications into a clinically useful system for individual continuous health data surveillance requires an architecture considering all relevant medical and technical conditions. Therefore, the requirements of an integrated system including a health app to collect and monitor sensor data to support personalized medicine are analyzed. The structure and behavior of the system are defined regarding the specific health use cases and scenarios. A vendor-independent architecture, which enables the collection of vital data from arbitrary wearables using a smartphone, is presented. The data is centrally managed and processed by attending physicians. The modular architecture allows the system to extend to new scenarios, data formats, etc. A prototypical implementation of the system shows the feasibility of the approach.
The data present in this article affords insides in the characterization of a newly described bi-functional furan-melamine monomer, which is used for the production of monodisperse, furan-functionalized melamine formaldehyde particles. In the related research article Urdl et al., 2019 data interpretations can be found. The furan functionalization of particles is necessary to perform reversible Diels-Alder reactions with maleimide (BMI) crosslinker to form thermoreversible network systems. To understand the reaction conditions of Diels Alder (DA) reaction with a Fu-Mel monomer and a maleimide crosslinker, model DA reaction were performed and evaluated using dynamic FT-IR measurements. During retro Diels-Alder (rDA) reactions of the monomer system, it was found out that some side reaction occurred at elevated temperatures. The data of evaluating the side reaction is described in one part of this manuscript. Additional high resolution SEM images of Fu Mel particles are shown and thermoreversible particle networks with BMI2 are shown. The data of different Fu-Mel particle networks with maleimide crosslinker are presented. Therefore, the used maleimide crosslinker with different spacer lengths were synthesized and the resulting networks were analyzed by ATR-FT-IR, SEM and DSC.
In der zunehmenden Individualisierung von Produkten zeigt sich, dass Kundennähe und digital vernetzte Zusammenarbeit aller Partner wertvolle Erfolgspotenziale darstellen. Für komplexe Kundenauftragsprozesse gilt es, zu vernetzen und die Prozesse und Systeme in Form eines ganzheitlichen Ansatzes zukunftsfähig zu gestalten. Dabei wird der Herausforderung begegnet, Daten und Dokumente zu digitalisieren und den manuellen Aufwand zu reduzieren. Der Untersuchungsgegenstand ist der Abwicklungsprozess, ausgehend von einer Online-Konfiguration durch den Kunden bis zur Bestellabwicklung. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Vorgehensmodell aufgezeigt, das Unternehmen in die Lage versetzt, ihren Kundenauftragsprozess durch ein digitales Geschäftsmodell zukunftsfähig auszugestalten. Nutzenpotenziale sind eine verstärkte Kundenbindung durch eng verzahnte digitale Kollaboration, verstärkte Wirtschaftlichkeit durch Reduktion der Prozesskosten sowie eine Optimierung der Customer Experience durch effiziente Abläufe.
Model-based hearing diagnosis based on wideband tympanometry measurements utilizing fuzzy arithmetic

Today's audiometric methods for the diagnosis of middle ear disease are often based on a comparison of measurements with standard curves that represent the statistical range of normal hearing responses. Because of large inter-individual variances in the middle ear, especially in wideband tympanometry (WBT), specificity and quantitative evaluation are greatly restricted. A new model-based approach could transform today's predominantly qualitative hearing diganostics into a quantitative and tailored, patient-specific diagnosis, by evaluating WBT measurements with the aid of a middle-ear model. For this particular investigation, a finite element model of a human ear was used. It consisted of an acoustic ear canal and a tympanic cavity model, a middle-ear with detailed nonlinear models of the tympanic membrane and annular ligament, and a simplified inner-ear model. This model has made it possible to identify pathologies from measurements, by analyzing the parameters through senstivity studies and parameter clustering. Uncertainties due to the lack of knowledge, subjectivity in numerical implementation and model simplification are taken into account by the application of fuzzy arithmetic. The most confident parameter set can be determined by applying an inverse fuzzy method on the measurement data. The principle and the benefits of this model-based approach are illustrated by the example of a two-mass oscillator, and also by the simulation of the energy absorbance of an ear with malleus fixation, where the parameter changes that are introduced can be determined quantitatively through the system identification.
Usually battery chargers have two stages and DC charging current is considered to by necessary for a proper charging. To decrease the charger volume, a single stage LLC battery charger is investigated in this paper. PFC stage is eliminated, therefore no bulky capacitor is necessary any more, and battery is charged with a sinusoidal-like charging current. However, previous studies show that such a pulsating charging current has only minimal impact on battery life and efficiency. Design considerations of the resonant tank and optimal transformer design are presented. A 360W single stage LLC converter prototype for e-bike charger achieves a power factor of 0.98, efficiency of 0.93 and power density of 1,8kW/dm³.
Cleanable bag filter : comparisons of different testing methods of ageing of filter materials

Cleanable bag filters are used to separate dust and other airborne particulate systems. Due to typical process conditions, they are subject to thermal, chemical and mechanical stress during use. The main objective of the IGF project no. 18307 "Investigation of the chemical and thermal degradation of cleanable filter media and improvement of their resistance by surface modification", was the development of a valid test method which can reproduce degradation caused by high temperatures and aggressive chemical atmospheres in a practice-oriented but time-saving manner. Within the IGF project, 2 accelerated ageing methods were applied, both of which have the decisive advantage of investigating damage in the gas phase. Many resistances of filter materials are otherwise carried out by immersing the materials in a mostly liquid damage medium at a defined temperature. These resistances are difficult to transfer ageing in the gas phase.
The purpose of this paper is to assess if the strategy development of the fashion industry is oriented to the long or short term. Following the theory of dynamic capabilities, this paper argues that a long term strategic orientation can be observed in corporate foresight activities. A multi methodological research approach is chosen to answer the research question. The findings suggest that the fashion industry is lagging behind other industries in terms of future orientation and therefore long-term strategy development, even though the challenges in the business environment are not perceived as less relevant.
Today many vertical retailers are operating different sales channels at the same time and are respon-sible for the range of products in all sales channels. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether for vertical fashion retailers a format-specific assortment policy can be observed on the German mar-ket. To investigate this topic in addition to secondary data of a literature research, quantitative prima-ry data was collected through a structured observation by conducting store checks. The combination provides insights into the research topic, allows to build hypotheses and to get a current and specific answer on the research topic. The study revealed all vertical retailers exploit the advantage of unlim-ited capacity of the online shop by offering in this channel mainly the broadest and deepest assort-ment. Within the retail store the vertical retailers focus on offering full-price goods for the current season in full size sets. Compared to the online shop here are less styles sophisticated presented and adjusted on the sales floor. For the outlet channel all brands showed a higher density of products and at least a price reduction of 30 per cent. The present paper is limited by time, depth and language of secondary data collection. As the study only conducted quantitative data within limited observations additional visual data over a longer period is necessary.

Methodik: Szenariostudie mit Daten aus einer schriftlichen Befragung
Praktische Implikationen: Solche Unternehmen sollten auf die Nutzenversprechen einer Employer Brand setzen, um sich als attraktiver Arbeitgeber für diese Zielgruppe zu positionieren. Voraussetzung dafür ist eine auf die Zielgruppe abgestimmte und präzise Kommunikation über die relevanten Attraktivitätsmerkmale.
Successful digital offerings are created at the intersection of what technologies can deliver and what customers want and will pay for. That point of intersection, however, has proved to be elusive. To find it, companies must experiment repeatedly, cocreate with customers, and assemble cross-functional development teams - and the insights gleaned along the way must be shared internally.
In this article, we discuss how several of the nearly 200 companies we've studied have built and exercised these capabilities. We also take a close look at how one company, Schneider Electric, is using them to acquire and share customer insights.
Stronger than they look

»Flexible Arbeitspraktiken: Eine Analyse aus pragmatischer Perspektive«. Traditional human resource management (HRM) research can hardly relate to today's developments in the world of work. Organizational boundaries are blurred because of the complexity due to globalization, digitalization, and demographic changes. In practice, new ways of organizing work can be found that depend on the specifics of the work situation. In this paper, we build on the economics of convention (EC) to elaborate on the current challenges HRM scholarship is confronted with and provide a theoretical lens that goes beyond the tension between market and bureaucracy principles in actual employment settings. We apply EC’s situationalist methodology to examples of the challenging coordination of flexibility in the workplace. We explain two hybrid forms of coordination – compromises and local arrangements – and highlight the dynamics of employment practices in organizations related to these forms. Thereby, we show that different modes of coordination in employment are applied in a fluctuating manner that depends on the specific situations. In doing so, we further seek to remind HRM scholars of the fruitfulness of the pragmatist perspective in analyzing work practices, as well as extending its conceptual toolkit for future analysis.
Vielen Unternehmen gelingt es aufgrund der hohen Komplexität nicht, sich bietende Chancen der digitalen Transformation der Arbeitswelt auszuschöpfen und Risiken zu vermeiden. Um die Digitalisierung aktiv gestalten zu können, müssen die für die jeweiligen Digitalisierungsinitiativen relevanten Handlungsfelder identifiziert werden. Hier setzt die vorliegende Forschung an. Anhand einer Einzelfallstudie in einem mittelgroßen deutschen Versicherungsunternehmen werden im vorliegenden Beitrag die konkreten Auswirkungen der digitalen Transformation auf die beteiligten Mitarbeiter analysiert und Implikationen diskutiert. Hierzu wurde ein Digitalisierungsprojekt, und zwar die Digitalisierung der bislang papierbasierten analogen Geschäftsprozesse (E-Akte), in den Blick genommen. Auf Basis der Durchführung und Auswertung von 24 Interviews, in denen die direkten Effekte der Veränderungsmaßnahme aus Sicht der Mitarbeiter und Führungskräfte erfasst und analysiert wurden, ließen sich 10 Handlungsfelder identifizieren, in denen sich die Arbeitswelt des untersuchten Unternehmens durch die Digitalisierung des Geschäftsprozesses verändert.
Vielen Entscheidern fällt es aufgrund der hohen Komplexität schwer, die Digitalisierung der Arbeitswelt gezielt im Unternehmen zu gestalten. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie bieten dafür einen empirisch fundierten strukturierten Rahmen. Der Digitalisierungsatlas zeigt auf, welche zentralen Dimensionen der Arbeitswelt sich wie verändern können, wie sie miteinander zusammenhängen und wie sie für digitale Arbeitswelten gestaltbar sind. So können Entscheider gezielt Veränderungsmaßnahmen unter Berücksichtigung aller relevanten Aspekte in ihrem Unternehmen planen und systematisch umsetzen. Dennoch ist der Digitalisierungsatlas nicht als Anleitung für die digitale Transformation zu verstehen, sondern als systematische Orientierungshilfe: Jede Veränderungsmaßnahme eines Unternehmens ist ein individueller Vorgang und kann verschiedene Aspekte der Arbeitswelt in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß betreffen. Dabei ist es wichtig, Aspekte gezielt und nur auf Basis begründeter Überlegungen anzupassen.
DigiTraIn 4.0: Anwendungsorientierte Instrumente für die digitale Transformation der Arbeitswelt

Im Projekt DigiTrain 4.0 werden anwendungsorientierte Instrumente entwickelt und erprobt, die Unternehmen dabei unterstützen, sich der komplexen Digitalisierung der Arbeitswelt erfolgreich zu stellen, dabei Chancen zu nutzen und Risiken handzuhaben. Zentrales Element ist der sogenannte Digitalisierungsatlas, der die Komplexität der Digitalisierung der Arbeitswelt in all ihren Dimensionen abbildet. Das Instrument des Digitalisierungsindex hilft dabei, den aktuellen Ist-Digitalisierungsgrad der Arbeitswelt individuell zu bestimmen. Diese Bestimmung ist Ausgangspunkt für das Instrument des Digitalisierungskompasses, der die Sollvorstellung der Digitalisierung der Arbeitswelt illustriert und eine unternehmensspezifische Transformationsagenda ermöglicht. Die Erforschung und Entwicklung sowie die zentralen Elemente dieser anwendungsorientierten Instrumente werden in diesem Beitrag dargestellt.
In this paper, we deal with optimizing the monetary costs of executing parallel applications in cloud-based environments. Specifically, we investigate on how scalability characteristics of parallel applications impact the total costs of computations. We focus on a specific class of irregularly structured problems, where the scalability typically depends on the input data. Consequently, dynamic optimization methods are required for minimizing the costs of computation. For quantifying the total monetary costs of individual parallel computations, the paper presents a cost model that considers the costs for the parallel infrastructure employed as well as the costs caused by delayed results. We discuss a method for dynamically finding the number of processors for which the total costs based on our cost model are minimal. Our extensive experimental evaluation gives detailed insights into the performance characteristics of our approach.
Parallel applications are the computational backbone of major industry trends and grand challenges in science. Whereas these applications are typically constructed for dedicated High Performance Computing clusters and supercomputers, the cloud emerges as attractive execution environment, which provides on-demand resource provisioning and a pay-per-use model. However, cloud environments require specific application properties that may restrict parallel application design. As a result, design trade-offs are required to simultaneously maximize parallel performance and benefit from cloud-specific characteristics.
In this paper, we present a novel approach to assess the cloud readiness of parallel applications based on the design decisions made. By discovering and understanding the implications of these parallel design decisions on an application’s cloud readiness, our approach supports the migration of parallel applications to the cloud.We introduce an assessment procedure, its underlying meta model, and a corresponding instantiation to structure this multi-dimensional design space. For evaluation purposes, we present an extensive case study comprising three parallel applications and discuss their cloud readiness based on our approach.
The cloud evolved into an attractive execution environment for parallel applications from the High Performance Computing (HPC) domain. Existing research recognized that parallel applications require architectural refactoring to benefit from cloud-specific properties (most importantly elasticity). However, architectural refactoring comes with many challenges and cannot be applied to all applications due to fundamental performance issues. Thus, during the last years, different cloud migration strategies have been considered for different classes of parallel applications. In this paper, we provide a survey on HPC cloud migration research. We investigate on the approaches applied and the parallel applications considered. Based on our findings, we identify and describe three cloud migration strategies.
Data analytics tasks on large datasets are computationally intensive and often demand the compute power of cluster environments. Yet, data cleansing, preparation, dataset characterization and statistics or metrics computation steps are frequent. These are mostly performed ad hoc, in an explorative manner and mandate low response times. But, such steps are I/O intensive and typically very slow due to low data locality, inadequate interfaces and abstractions along the stack. These typically result in prohibitively expensive scans of the full dataset and transformations on interface boundaries.
In this paper, we examine R as analytical tool, managing large persistent datasets in Ceph, a wide-spread cluster file-system. We propose nativeNDP – a framework for Near Data Processing that pushes down primitive R tasks and executes them in-situ, directly within the storage device of a cluster-node. Across a range of data sizes, we show that nativeNDP is more than an order of magnitude faster than other pushdown alternatives.
Was kann ein produzierender Mittelständler tun, damit die Möglichkeiten für einen effizienteren Umgang mit Energie in seinem Betrieb auch ausgeschöpft werden? Die Ergebnisse eines zweijährigen Forschungsprojektes in Baden-Württemberg: Energieeffizienz ist für die kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) ein grundsätzlich bedeutsames Thema, größtenteils gleichbedeutend mit anderen strategischen oder operativen Fragen. Je größer die Unternehmen, umso mehr trifft das zu ; die Unterschiede nach Energiebedarf sind hingegen gering. Erfolgsversprechende Maßnahmen sind: die Unternehmen müssen Energieeffizienz strategisch verankern und ihre Führung darauf ausrichten, sollten möglichst viele verschiedene Maßnahmen umsetzen und die Belegschaft sensibilisieren. Aber auch die gesellschaftliche Meinung "treibt" die Unternehmen zu mehr Energieeffizienz.

Design Thinking als eigenständige Disziplin gibt es bereits seit den sechziger Jahren, aber erst 2005 wurde die Managementlehre darauf aufmerksam. Seitdem wird das Konzept in der Wirtschaft und an den Hochschulen immer populärer, da sich "thinking like a designer" als erfolgreiche Methode erwiesen hat, um Innovationen anzustoßen und Probleme zu beseitigen. Zu den zahlreichen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten von Design Thinking zählt das Design neuer Produkte und Dienstleistungen, die Prozessentwicklung und -implementierung sowie die Organisationsgestaltung.
In vitro, hydrogel-based ECMs for functionalizing surfaces of various material have played an essential role in mimicking native tissue matrix. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely used to build microfluidic or organ-on-chip devices compatible with cells due to its easy handling in cast replication. Despite such advantages, the limitation of PDMS is its hydrophobic surface property. To improve wettability of PDMS-based devices, alginate, a naturally derived polysaccharide, was covalently bound to the PDMS surface. This alginate then crosslinked further hydrogel onto the PDMS surface in desired layer thickness. Hydrogel-modified PDMS was used for coating a topography chip system and in vitro investigation of cell growth on the surfaces. Moreover, such hydrophilic hydrogel-coated PDMS is utilized in a microfluidic device to prevent unspecific absorption of organic solutions. Hence, in both exemplary studies, PDMS surface properties were modified leading to improved devices.
Although integrins are responsible for the interaction of cells with their environment, e.g., the extracellular matrix or artificial substrates, there is still a lack of knowledge about their role in cell adhesion and migration on protein-coated substrates with microtopography. Understanding such interactions could lead to new applications in e.g., medical implants as well as shed light on processes such as embryonic development, angiogenesis, wound healing, and tumor progression. In this work, the influence of surface topography and chemistry on αvβ3 and α5β1 integrin-mediated cell adhesion and migration of healthy and malignant human cell types (human coronary artery endothelial cells, human osteosarcoma cells, and human skin fibroblasts cells) was studied, using microgrooved and flat substrates covered by two different extracellular proteins, fibronectin and vitronectin. Although some general behaviors can be observed, cell migration (speed, directionality, and persistence time) and morphological adaptation (cell area, aspect ratio, and circularity) of cells on protein coated microgrooved substrates are mainly dependent on the cell type and its specific integrin expression.
Digital light microscopy techniques are among the most widely used methods in cell biology and medical research. Despite that, the automated classification of objects such as cells or specific parts of tissues in images is difficult. We present an approach to classify confluent cell layers in microscopy images by learned deep correlation features using deep neural networks. These deep correlation features are generated through the use of gram-based correlation features and are input to a neural network for learning the correlation between them. In this work we wanted to prove if a representation of cell data based on this is suitable for its classification as has been done for artworks with respect to their artistic period. The method generates images that contain recognizable characteristics of a specific cell type, for example, the average size and the ordered pattern.
Indoor localization systems are becoming more and more important with the digitalization of the industrial sector. Sensor data such as the current position of machines, transport vehicles, goods or tools represent an essential component of cyber physical production systems (CCPS). However, due to the high costs of these sensors, they are not widespread and are used mainly in special scenarios. However, especially optical indoor positioning systems (OIPS) based on cameras have certain advantages due to their technological specifications. In this paper, the application scenarios and requirements as well as their characteristics are presented and a classification approach of OIPS is introduced.

The detection and characterisation of oxide layers on metallic copper samples plays an important role for power electronic modules in the automotive industry. However, since precise identification of oxide layers by visual inspection is difficult and time consuming due to inhomogeneous colour distribution, a reliable and efficient method for estimating their thickness is needed. In this study, hyperspectral imaging in the visible wavelength range (425–725 nm) is proposed as an in-line inspection method for analysing oxide layers in real-time during processing of copper components such as printed circuit boards in the automotive industry. For implementation in the production line a partial least square regression (PLSR) model was developed with a calibration set of n = 12 with about 13,000 spectra per sample to determine the oxide layer thickness on top of the technical copper surfaces. The model shows a good prediction performance in the range of 0–30 nm compared to Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiles as a reference method. The root mean square error (RMSE) is 1.75 nm for calibration and 2.70 nm for full cross validation. Applied to an external dataset of four new samples with about 13,000 spectra per sample the model provides an RMSE of 1.84 nm for prediction and demonstrates the robustness of the model during real-time processing. The results of this study prove the ability and usefulness of the proposed method to estimate the thickness of oxide layers on technical copper. Hence, the application of hyperspectral imaging for the industrial process control of electronic devices is very promising.
Ein Halo-Effekt liegt vor, wenn der Eindruck eines dominanten Merkmals die Beurteilung anderer Eigenschaften eines Objekts beeinflusst. Es handelt sich um eine kognitive Verzerrung, die zu verzerrten Beurteilungen führt. In einem sportbezogenenen Kontext ist der Halo-Effekt bislang kaum erforscht worden, obwohl dies wesentlich dazu beitragen könnte, das Denken und Verhalten von Sportfans zu verstehen. Das Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrags ist es, die Frage zu beantworten, die gleichermaßen für die Theorie und die Praxis des Sportmanagements von Interesse ist: gibt es einen Halo-Effekt im Fußball? Der Beitrag präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer empirischen Untersuchung, in deren Rahmen Fans von Vereinen aus der deutschen Fußball-Bundesliga befragt wurden.
Melamine–formaldehyde (MF) resins are widely used as adhesives and finishing materials in the wood industry. During resin cure, either methylene ether or methylene bridges are formed, leading to the formation of a three‐dimensional resin network. Not only the curing degree, but also the chemical species present in the cured resin determine the quality of the final product. Analytical methods allowing a detailed investigation of network formation are of great benefit to manufacturers. In the present work, resin cure of an MF precondensate is studied at different temperatures (100–200 °C) without considering the initial pH as a factor. Isoconversional kinetic analysis based on exothermal curing enthalpies enables calculation of the crosslinking degree at a given time/temperature regime. A semiquantitative determination of the chemical groups present is performed based on solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance data. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has shown to be a fast and reliable analytical tool with high sensitivity toward functional groups and with great potential for at‐line process control.
A new two-dimensional fluorescence sensor system was developed for in-line monitoring of mammalian cell cultures. Fluorescence spectroscopy allows for the detection and quantification of naturally occurring intra- and extracellular fluorophores in the cell broth. The fluorescence signals correlate the the cells' current redox state and other relevant process parameters. Cell culture pretests with twelve different excitation wavelengths showed that only three wavelengths account for a vast majority of spectral variation. Accordingly, the newly developed device utilizes three high-power LEDs as excitation sources in combination with a back-thinned CCD-spectrometer for fluorescence detection.
Collaborative apparel consumption is proposed as more sustainable alternative to conventional consumption. The purpose of this study is the exploration of consumers’ motives to participate in collaborative apparel consumption. Findings suggest that consumers’ intention to participate in collaborative apparel consumption is mainly influenced by financial benefits, convenience and sustainability awareness.
Die Passagierzahlen an deutschen Flughäfen steigen konstant. Flughafenmedien bieten daher ein großes Potenzial für Werbetreibende, eine hohe Reichweite zu generieren sowie hochwertige Zielgruppen spezifisch anzusprechen. Insbesondere digitale Werbemedien genießen an Flughäfen eine große Beliebtheit und werden von der Mehrzahl der Reisenden in der Regel stärker wahrgenommen als analoge Werbung. Sie bleiben besser im Gedächtnis und sorgen für eine willkommene Abwechslung während der oftmals langen Verweildauer am Flughafen.
Homogeneous and monodispersed furan functionalised melamine-formaldehyde particles were produced. As a precursor, 2-chloro-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine (Mel) was selectively substituted with 2-aminomethyl furan (Fu) units in a convenient one step reaction. The pure reaction product Fu-Mel, which was used without further purification, was reacted with formaldehyde by conventional sol-gel condensation in aqueous medium to yield chemically homogenous, spherically shaped and monodispersed particles. The particles were analysed using ATR-FT-IR, Raman, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, TGA, SEM and DSC measurements. The reactivity of the furan groups located at the particle surface was studied by performing a thermoreversible Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction with bis-maleimide coupling agents. The formed networks showed thermoreversible behaviour, which was characterised by dynamic IR and DSC measurements.
We report an investigation into the distribution of copper oxidation states in oxide films formed on the surfaces of technical copper. The oxide films were grown by thermal annealing at ambient conditions and studied using Auger depth profiling and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Both Auger and UV–Vis data were evaluated applying multivariate curve resolution (MCR). Both experimental techniques revealed that the growth of Cu2O dominates the initial ca. 40 nm of oxide films grown at 175 °C, while further oxide growth is dominated by CuO formation. The largely coincident results from both experimental approaches demonstrates the huge benefit of the application of UV–Vis spectroscopy in combination with MCR analysis, which provides access to information on chemical state distributions without the need for destructive sample analysis. Both approaches are discussed in detail.
Der AM Field Guide gibt einen ersten strukturierten Überblick in die komplexe und vielschichtige Welt der additiven Fertigungsverfahren. Getrennt nach den Materialien Polymere, Metalle und weitere Matrialien werden die gängisten jeweils auf dem Markt angebotenen AM-Verfahren schematisch dargestellt und der Verfahrenskern in Kurzform beschrieben. Neben den hier dargestellten Hauptverfahren gibt es viele Derivate und Sonderverfahren, die ebenfalls eingesetzt werden, jedoch nicht explizit gezeigt sind. Zu beachten ist, dass in dem jungen Bereich der additiven Fertigung viele Hersteller ihren AM-Anwendungen eigene Namen geben, so dass eine allgemeingültige umfassende Klassifizierung nur ansatzweise erreichbar ist.
This paper develops a new methodology in order to study the role of dynamic expectations. Neither reference-point theories nor feedback models are sufficient to describe human expectations in a dynamic market environment. We use an interdisciplinary approach and demonstrate that expectations of non-learning agents are time-invariant and isotropic. On the contrary, learning enhances expectations. We uncover the “yardstick of expectations” in order to assess the impact of market developments on expectations. For the first time in the literature, we reveal new insights about the motion of dynamic expectations. Finally, the model is suitable for an AI approach and has major implications on the behaviour of market participants.
Nach der Euro- und Wirtschaftskrise in den Jahren seit 2010 verzeichnet die Europäische Union (EU) derzeit einen soliden Wirtschaftsaufschwung in allen Mitgliedstaaten. Der Anteil Europas an der Weltwirtschaft beträgt rund 30 Prozent. Das europäische Wirtschaftswachstum ist 2018 mit 2,1 Prozent sogar größer als das in Deutschland mit 1,6 Prozent. Eine Analyse der Dauer von Aufschwungsphasen zeigt, dass Europa im Vergleich zur Weltwirtschaft sogar unerwarteter Spitzenreiter ist. Seit den 1970er-Jahren liegt die durchschnittliche Dauer eines europäischen Wirtschaftsaufschwungs bei über dreißig Quartalen; sie ist mithin deutlich höher als in den USA und Japan.
This paper studies option pricing based on a reverse engineering (RE) approach. We utilize artificial intelligence in order to numerically compute the prices of options. The data consist of more than 5000 call- and put-options from the German stock market. First, we find that option pricing under reverse engineering obtains a smaller root mean square error to market prices. Second, we show that the reverse engineering model is reliant on training data. In general, the novel idea of reverse engineering is a rewarding direction for future research. It circumvents the limitations of finance theory, among others strong assumptions and numerical approximations under the Black–Scholes model.
This paper generalizes the theory of policy uncertainty with the new literature on rational inattention. First, the model demonstrates that inattention is dependent on the signal variance and the policy parameter. Second, I discover a novel trade-off showing that a policy instrument mitigates attention. Third, the policy instrument is non-linear and reciprocal to both the size and variance of the signal. The unifying theory creates new implications to economic theory and public policy alike.

Die Reform der Währungsunion sollte folgende zwei Aspekte verknüpfen: einerseits die Übernahme einer stärkeren politischen Stabilitätsverantwortung und andererseits die Stärkung der Marktkräfte. Nur so kann das Prinzip von Eigenverantwortung und Haftung abgesichert werden. Zudem sollte die Politik im Euroraum einen Abwicklungsmechanismus für überschuldete Mitgliedsländer etablieren.
A clinically useful system for individual continuous health data monitoring needs an architecture that takes into account all relevant medical and technical conditions. The requirements for a health app to support such a system are collected, and a vendor independent architecture is designed that allows the collection of vital data from arbitrary wearables using a smartphone. A prototypical implementation for the main scenario shows the feasibility of the approach.
Assistive environments are entering our homes faster than ever. However, there are still various barriers to be broken. One of the crucial points is a personalization of offered services and integration of assistive technologies in common objects and therefore in a regular daily routine. Recognition of sleep patterns for the preliminary sleep study is one of the Health services that could be performed in an undisturbing way. This article proposes the hardware system for the measurement of bio-vital signals necessary for initial sleep study in a nonobtrusive way. The first results confirm the potential of measurement of breathing and movement signals with the proposed system.
In summary, we believe that current “sleep monitoring” consumer devices on the market must undergo a more robust validation process before being made available and distributed in the general public. This is especially noteworthy as there have been first reports in the literature that inaccurate feedback of such consumer devices can worry subjects and may even lead to compromised well-being of the user.
During two researches the influence of technologies on sleep were analyzed. The first one is about the effect of light on the circadian rhythm and as consequence on sleep quality of persons in a vegetative state. The second one, which is still running, surveys the influence of several technical tools on the sleep of elderly people living in a nursing home.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic and a life threatening disease: an adjusted treatment and a proper management of the disease are crucial to prevent or delay the complications of diabetes. Although during the last decade the development of the artificial pancreas has presented great advances in diabetes care, the multiple daily injections therapy still represents the most widely used treatment option for type 1 diabetes. This work presents the proposal and first development stages of an application focused on guiding patients using the continuous glucose monitors and smart pens together with insulin and carbohydrates recommendations. Our proposal aims to develop a platform to integrate a series of innovative machine learning models and tools rigorously tested together with the use of the latest IoT devices to manage type 1 diabetes. The resulting system actually closes the loop, like the artificial pancreas, but in an intermittent way.
This paper investigates the possibility to effectively monitor and control the respiratory action using a very simple and non invasive technique based on a single lightweight reduced-size wireless surface electromyography (sEMG) sensor placed below the sternum. The captured sEMG signal, due to the critical sensor position, is characterized by a low energy level and it is affected by motion artifacts and cardiac noise. In this work we present a preliminary study performed on adults for assessing the correlation of the spirometry signal and the sEMG signal after the removal of the superimposed heart signal. This study and the related findings could be useful in respiratory monitoring of preterm infants.
The potentials and opportunities created by digitized healthcare can be further customized through smart data processing and analysis using accurate patient information. This development and the associated new treatment concepts basing on digital smart sensors can lead to an increase in motivation by applying gamification approaches. This effect can also be used in the field of medical treatment, e.g. with the help of a digital spirometer combined with an app. In one of our exemplary applications, we show how to control an airplane within an app by breathing respectively inhaling and exhaling. Using this biofeedback within a game allows us to increase the motivation and fun for children that need to perform necessary exercises.
Due to the rising need for palliative care in Russia, it is crucial to provide timely and high-quality solutions for patients, relatives, and caregivers. A methodology for remote monitoring of patients in need of palliative care and the requirements will be developed for a hardware-software complex for remote monitoring of patients' health at home.
A large body of literature is concerned with models of presence— the sensory illusion of being part of a virtual scene— but there is still no general agreement on how to measure it objectively and reliably. For the presented study, we applied contemporary theory to measure presence in virtual reality. Thirty-seven participants explored an existing commercial game in order to complete a collection task. Two startle events were naturally embedded in the game progression to evoke physical reactions and head tracking data was collected in response to these events. Subjective presence was recorded using a post-study questionnaire and real-time assessments. Our novel implementation of behavioral measures lead to insights which could inform future presence research: We propose a measure in which startle reflexes are evoked through specific events in the virtual environment, and head tracking data is compared to the range and speed of baseline interactions.

Digitale Selbstvermessungstechnologien wurden in den letzten Jahren zum Sinnbild rationaler und optimierter Lebensführung. Mit dem digitalen Prosumenten sind jedoch auch zahlreiche Pathologien verbunden. Im Rahmen dieses Aufsatzes soll anhand eines Praxisbeispiels aufgezeigt werden, wie sich vor dem Hintergrund des aktuellen KWK-Gesetzes die Entscheidung für eine KWK-Anlage mit einer größeren Leistung bereits heute wirtschaftlich auswirkkt. Darüber hinaus wird eine Methode zur Festlegung des optimalen Pufferspeichervolumens vorgestellt.
This paper summarises the experiences with sustainability reporting in a very wide meaning at Universities of Applied Sciences (UoAS). It focuses on the communication of sustainability aspects and activities of universities. It provides a recommendation, a model for communicating the sustainability activities of universities and emphasises the values of this appraoch. This paper aims to find the most effective ways to convey education for sustainable development to a broad public and initiate communication about sustainability aspects with society.
The paper is based on action research done at two universities about the ways in which academic institutions can communicate with their stakeholders in order to report about their own role as a responsible university and also to make an impact on the sustainable development on a local and global scale.
Research is focussed on experiences at Universitites of Applied Sciences with their strong focus on applied research, education and transfer. However, these results can be helpful for each academic institution that wants to make a positive impact on society. The concept which we present focusses on the possible impact which universities can generate.
Seen as the contribution to the research field of sustainabitliy reporting the paper points out that a continuous qualitative reporting process with a focus on education for SD is an adequate and efficient approach to sustainability reporting for universities and an effective way to reach a broad public.
We show that there are several efficient methodss of communication ranging from the traditional sustainability report to publications which address the public and to more innovative methods using the web 2.0. We show and argue that for universities, alternative ways of sustainability communication may be more effective to achieve the sustainability mission.
The concept which we present gives the universities a broader impact on society and helps them to support sustainable development in an efficient way.
In recent years Indonesia has been confronted with an excessive generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), predominantly present in the form of organic refuse. While moving towards integrated solid waste management (ISWM) is an important strategy used to control its generation, it is also now recognized that economic approaches need to be promoted as well in order to tackle the problem concertedly. In this case study, empirical approaches are developed to understand how market instruments could be introduced into environmental services and how to apply co-benefit approach in a green economy paradigm for Indonesia. We investigate the feasibility of introducing market instruments in Indonesia by appliying local co-benefit initiatives adapted from German experiences in integrating market instruments into MSW management practices. Currently co-benefit activities are undertaken in the Sukunan village (Yogjakarta) to promote waste composting using market incentives in the framework of community-based solid waste management (CBSWM). This scheme aims at reducing MSW generation at its source and mobilizing people to be involved in waste separation (organic and non-organic) at household levels. As a result, about 200,000 t of CO2 emissions could be successfully reduced annually. By integrating market instruments into waste management practices, the result of our studies sugggests that Indonesia could make positive changes to its environmental policy and regulation of MSW at local levels. The country's policymakers have played important roles in promoting the effectiveness of urban development with co-benefits approaches to facilitate its transition towards a green eccnomy.
The metric and qualitative analysis of models of the upper and lower dental arches is an important aspect of orthodontic treatment planning. Currently available eLearning systems for dental education only allow access to digital learning materials, and do not interactively support the learning progress. Moreover, to date no study compared the efficiency of learning methods based on physical or digital study models. For this pilot study, 18 dental students were separated into two groups to investigate whether the learning success in study model analysis with an interactive elearning system is higher based on digital models or on conventional plaster models. The results show that with the digital method less time is needed per model analysis. Moreover, the digital approach leads to higher total scores than that based on plaster models. We conclude that interactive eLearning using digital dental arch models is a promising tool for dental education.
Rapidly growing population and increasing amount of shipments induced by the e-commerce are two of the main reasons for the constantly rising urban freight traffic. Cities are therefore overwhelmed by a growing stream of goods and the available infrastructure, shared between people and goods traffic, often reached its maximum capacity. Phenomena such as traffic congestion, pollution and lack of space are direct consequences of this trend and their impact on the quality of life in the city is not negligible. City administrations are keen to evaluate innovative city logistics concepts and adopt alternative solutions, to overcome the challenges posed by such a dynamic environment, constrained in existing infrastructure. In this paper, a heuristic method based on the utility analysis is presented. Thanks to a modular approach accounting for stakeholders´ requirements, possible different scenarios and available technologies, the development of new city logistic concepts is supported. The proposed method is then applied to a case study concerning the city of Reutlingen (Germany). Results are presented and a brief discussion leads to the conclusion.
Due to the lack of sophisticated component libraries for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), highly optimized MEMS sensors are currently designed using a polygon driven design flow. The advantage of this design flow is its accurate mechanical simulation, but it lacks a method for an efficient and accurate electrostatic analysis of parasitic effects of MEMS. In order to close this gap in the polygon-driven design flow, we present a customized electrostatic analysis flow for such MEMS devices. Our flow features a 2.5D fabrication-process simulation, which simulates the three typical MEMS fabrication steps (namely deposition of materials including topography, deep reactive-ion etching, and the release etch by vapor-phase etching) very fast and on an acceptable abstraction level. Our new 2.5D fabrication-process simulation can be combined with commercial field-solvers such as they are commonly used in the design of integrated circuits. The new process simulation enables a faster but nevertheless satisfactory analysis of the electrostatic parasitic effects, and hence simplifies the electrical optimization of MEMS.
Nowadays, the demand for a MEMS development/design kit (MDK) is even more in focus than ever before. In order to achieve a high quality and cost effectiveness in the development process for automotive and consumer applications, an advanced design flow for the MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems) element is urgently required. In this paper, such a development methodology and flow for parasitic extraction of active semiconductor devices is presented. The methodology considers geometrical extraction and links the electrically active pn junctions to SPICE standard library models and subsequently extracts the netlist. An example for a typical pressure sensor is presented and discussed. Finally, the results of the parasitic extraction are compared with fabricated devices in terms of accuracy and capability.
The paper studies the deciding parameters that influence business students' selection of internships in Germany. The findings are based on literature research and a survey amongst students and company representatives and asks to rate the importance of 24 different aspects of internships. The benefits and negative impacts of internships on students, companies and universities are discussed in detail. The results of different demographic groups are compared.
Changing requirements and qualification profiles of employees, increasingly complex digital systems up to artificial intelligence, missing standards for the seamless embedding of existing resources and unpredictable return on investments are just a few examples of the challenges of an SME in the age of digitalisation. In most cases there is a lack of suitable tools and methods to support companies in the digital transformation process in the value creation processes, but also of training and learning materials. A European research project (BITTMAS - Business Transformation towards Digitalisation and Smart systems, ERASMUS+, 2016-1 DE02-KA202-003437) with international partners from science, associations and industry has addressed this issue and developed various methods and instruments to support SMEs. Within the scope of a literature search, 16 suitable digitalisation concepts for production and logistics were identified. In the following, a learning platform with a literature database with multivariable sorting options according to branches and keywords of digitalisation, a video gallery with basic and advanced knowledge and a glossary were created in order to provide the user with consolidated and structured specialist knowledge. The 16 identifying concepts for transforming value-added processes in the context of digitalisation were transferred to a learning platform using developed learning paths in coaching and training to online course modules including test questions. A maturity model was developed and implemented in a self assessment tool for the analysis to identify the potential of digitalisation in production and logistics in relation to the current technological digitalisation level of the company. As a result, the user receives one or more of the 16 potential digitalisation concepts suggested or the delta for the necessary, not yet available enabler technologies is presented as a spider diagram. For a successful implementation of the identified suitable digitalisation concepts in production and logistics, a further tool was developed to identify supplementary requirements for all company divisions and stakeholders in relation to the "digital transformation" in the form of a self-evaluation. This paper presents the methods and tools developed, the accompanying learning materials and the learning platform.
Due to Industry 4.0, the full value creation has the chance to undergo a fundamental technological transformation, the realisation of which, however, requires the commitment of every company for its own benefit. The new approaches of Industry 4.0 are often hardly evaluated, let alone proven, so that SMEs in particular often cannot properly estimate the potentials and risks, and often waiting too long with the migration towards Industry 4.0. In addition, they often do not pursue an integrated concept in order to identify possible potentials through changes in their business models. . As part of the research project "GEN-I 4.0 – Geschäftsmodell-Entwicklung für die Industrie 4.0” ", the ESB Business School at Reutlingen University of Applied Sciences and the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and Organization FHG IAO were engaged by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation from 2016 to 2018 to develop tools and an approach how the local economy can develop digital business models for itself in a methodical, beneficial and targeted manner. Through international analyses and interviews GEN-I 4.0 gained and concretized the knowledge required for the evaluation and selection of solutions and approaches for the transfer to develop digital business models. Together with the know-how of the project partners on Industry 4.0 and business model development, the findings were incorporated into the development of two software tools with which SMEs are shown the potentials of Industry 4.0 for their individual business model, online and in selfassessment, and given a comprehensive structured, concrete approach to development, as well as their individual risk. Users of the tools are supported by the selected platform for the networking of different players to implement innovative business models accompanied by coaching concepts for the companies in the follow-up and implementation of the assessment results.
After the initiator of the ESB Logistics Learning Factory, Prof. Vera Hummel had made experience in developing and implementing a concept for a Learning Factory for Advanced Industrial Engineering (aIE) at the University of Stuttgart, Institute IFF between 2005 and 2008, she was appointed as a full professor at ESB Business School, a faculty of Reutlingen University in March 2010. Lacking a realistic, hands on learning and teaching environment of industrial scale for its industrial engineering students, first ideas for a Learning Factory that would strongly focus on all aspects of production logistics were drafted in 2012. Already back then, a strong integration of virtual and physical factory was desired: While the Learning Factory itself would be physical, the neighboring partners along the supply chain, such as suppliers or distribution warehouses, could be added in a fully virtual way. Considering implementation of the ESB Logistics Learning Factory a strategic initiative of the university, initial funding was provided by the faculty ESB Business School itself. Following its own creed, to provide future-oriented training for the region, also primarily local suppliers and manufacturers were selected as equipment providers to the new Learning Factory. During the initialization phase, 2014, a total of three researchers and nine students worked approximately four months to set up a first assembly line, storage racks, AGVs, or pick-by-light systems in conjunction with the underlying didactical concept. Since then, several hundred of students have participated in trainings and lectures held in the ESB Logistics Learning Factory, several research projects were carried out, and multiple high-level politicians and industry executives have been touring the shop floor. Also, more than EUR 2 million in research and infrastructure funds could be secured for expansion and upgrade — allowing the ESB Logistics Learning Factory today to represent many core aspects of an Industrie 4.0 production environment.
The 21st century: an era where emojis and hashtags find their way into every sentence, where taking selfies, live tweeting and mining bitcoin are the norm, and where Insta-culture dictates what we say and do. This is the era into which the digital native was born. With so many changes in every aspect of our lives, how is it that one of the most influential aspects, our education, has remained unchanged? Our education system not only fails to appeal to today’s students, but more importantly, it fails to equip them with the skills required in the 21st Century. It is thus of no surprise that industries feel graduates entering the workplace lack skills in critical thinking, problem solving and self-directed learning. AI, machine learning and big data: Tools and mechanisms we so eagerly incorporate to create smart factories yet are hesitant to use elsewhere. Gamification and games have shown great results in education and training; with most research suggesting a stronger focus on personalization and adaptation. When combined with analytics and machine learning, the potential of games is yet to be realized. A real-time adaptive game would not only always present an appropriate degree of challenge for the individual but would allow for a shift in focus from the recitation of facts, to the application of information filtered to solve the particular problem at hand. South Africa, a country faced with a severe skills gap, could benefit greatly from games. If used correctly, they may just offer a desperately needed contribution toward equipping both current and future employees with the skills needed to survive in the 21st century. This paper explores the feasibility of using such games for enhanced knowledge dissemination and the upskilling of the workforce.
Development of an easy teaching and simulation solution for an autonomous mobile robot system

With mass customized production becoming the mainstream, industries are shifting from large-scale manufacturing to flexible and customized production of small batch sizes. Agile manufacturing strategies adopted by SMEs are driving the usage of collaborative robots in today's factories. Major challenges in the adoption of cobots in the industry are the lack of a highly trained workforce to program the robot to perform complex tasks and integration of robot systems to other smart devices in the factory. In addition, the teaching and simulation by non-robotics experts of many industrial collaborative robot systems like the KUKA LBR iiwa is a major challenge, since these systems are designed to be programmed by robot experts and not by shop floor workers or other non-experts. This paper describes the research and development activities done for reducing the barriers in operation and ensure holistic integration of LBR iiwa cobot in the assembly on the example of the ESB Logistics Learning Factory. These include a visual programming solution for the easy teaching of various tasks. Robotic tasts are classified based on common robotics applications and application-specific blocks abstracting specific actions are implemented. A factory worker with no programming competency cour create robot programs by combining these blocks using a Graphical User Interface. In addition, a simulation solution was developed to visualized, analyse, and optimize robotic workflow before deployment. an autonomous mobile robot is integrated with the LBR iiw to improve reconfigurability and thus also the productivity. The system as a whole is controlled using an event-driven distributed control system. Finally, the capabilities of the system are analysed based on the design principles of Industrie 4.0 and potential future research ideas are discussed to further improve the system.
The Eleventh International Conference on Advances in Databases, Knowledge, and Data Applications (DBKDA 2019), held between June 02, 2019 to June 06, 2019 - Athens, Greece, continued a series of international events covering a large spectrum of topics related to advances in fundamentals on databases, evolution of relation between databases and other domains, data base technologies and content processing, as well as specifics in applications domains databases.
Advances in different technologies and domains related to databases triggered substantial improvements for content processing, information indexing, and data, process and knowledge mining. The push came from Web services, artificial intelligence, and agent technologies, as well as from the generalization of the XML adoption.
High-speed communications and computations, large storage capacities, and loadbalancing for distributed databases access allow new approaches for content processing with incomplete patterns, advanced ranking algorithms and advanced indexing methods.
Evolution on e-business, ehealth and telemedicine, bioinformatics, finance and marketing, geographical positioning systems put pressure on database communities to push the ‘de facto’ methods to support new requirements in terms of scalability, privacy, performance, indexing, and heterogeneity of both content and technology.

Continuous refactoring is necessary to maintain source code quality and to cope with technical debt. Since manual refactoring is inefficient and error prone, various solutions for automated refactoring have been proposed in the past. However, empirical studies have shown that these solutions are not widely accepted by software developers and most refactorings are still performed manually. For example, developers reported that refactoring tools should support functionality for reviewing changes. They also criticized that introducing such tools would require substantial effort for configuration and integration into the current development environment.
In this paper, we present our work towards the Refactoring-Bot, an autonomous bot that integrates into the team like a human developer via the existing version control platform. The bot automatically performs refactorings to resolve code smells and presents the changes to a developer for asynchronous review via pull requests. This way, developers are not interrupted in their workflow and can review the changes at any time with familiar tools. Proposed refactorings can then be integrated into the code base via the push of a button. We elaborate on our vision, discuss design decisions, describe the current state of development, and give an outlook on planned development and research activities.
Additive manufacturing is a key technology which applies the ideas of Industry 4.0 in order to enable the production of personalized and highly customized products economically. Especially small and medium sized companies often lack the competence and experience to evaluate objectively and profoundly the potential of additive manufacturing technologies in small and medium sized companies. Furthermore, the method has been validated in a small medical technology company evaluating the additive manufacturing potential of an existing surgery tool.
Serverless computing is an emerging cloud computing paradigm with the goal of freeing developers from resource management issues. As of today, serverless computing platforms are mainly used to process computations triggered by events or user requests that can be executed independently of each other. These workloads benefit from on-demand and elastic compute resources as well as per-function billing. However, it is still an open research question to which extent parallel applications, which comprise most often complex coordination and communication patterns, can benefit from serverless computing.
In this paper, we introduce serverless skeletons for parallel cloud programming to free developers from both parallelism and resource management issues. In particular, we investigate on the well known and widely used farm skeleton, which supports the implementation of a wide range of applications. To evaluate our concepts, we present a prototypical development and runtime framework and implement two applications based on our framework: Numerical integration and hyperparameter optimization - a commonly applied technique in machine learning. We report on performance measurements for both applications and discuss
the usefulness of our approach.
Die Landessprache in der Lehre - welche Bedeutung kommt ihr bei der Internationalisierung zu?

Seit der Jahrhundertwende wird erfolgreich die Intensivierung des Austauschs zwischen wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen betrieben, auch national, aber vor allem international. Anfänglich schien klar, dass gute Indikatoren für die "Internationalisierung" genannte Entwicklung die Anteile ausländischer Wissenschaftler und Studierender sind. Konsens über sinnvolle Zielgrößen für die Indikatoren gibt es jedoch bisher nicht. Nach einiger Zeit flachte sich der anfängliche Anstieg dieser Quoten etwas ab. Mit der Folge einer weiteren Steigerung dieses Indikators ist neuerdings international der Trend zur Anglophonisierung der Lehre zu beobachten.
Anders als Digital-ICs, die hochautomatisiert entworfen werden können, ist der Entwurf analoger ICs bis heute Handarbeit. Übliche auf Optimierung basierende Automatisierungsverfahren scheitern. Die Ursachen wurden jetzt in einem Forschungsprojekt untersucht, um neue Ansätze zur Entwurfsautomatisierung analoger ICs abzuleiten.
In this paper, we address the novel EDP (Expert Design Plan) principle for procedural design automation of analog integrated circuits, which captures the knowledge-based design strategy of human circuit designers in an executable script, making it reusable. We present the EDP Player, which enables the creation and execution of EDPs for arbitrary circuits in the Cadence® Virtuoso® Design Environment. The tool provides a generic version of an instruction set, called EDPL (EDPLanguage), enabling emulation of a typical manual analog sizing flow. To automate the design of a Miller Operational Amplifier and to create variants of a Smart Power IC, several EDPs were implemented using this tool. Employing these EDPs leads to a strong reduction of design time without compromising design quality or reliability.
Digital technologies are moving into physical products. Smart cars, connected lightbulbs and data-generating tennis rackets are examples of previously “pure” physical products that turned into “digitized products”. Digitizing products offers many use cases for consumers that will hopefully persuade them to buy these products. Yet, as revenues from selling digitized products will remain small in the near future, digitized product manufacturers have to look for other sources of benefits. Producer-side use cases describe how manufacturers can benefit internally from the digitized products they produce. Our article identifies three categories of such use cases: product-, service-, and process-related ones.
A novel brushless excitation concept for synchronous machines with a rotating power converter is proposed in this paper. The concept does not need an auxiliary winding or any other modification to the machine structure apart from an inverter with a DC link capacitor and a controller on the rotor. The power required for the rotor excitation is provided by injecting harmonics into the stator winding. Thus, a voltage in the field coil is induced. The rotor inverter is controlled such that the alternating current charges the DC link capacitor. At the same time the inverter supplies the DC field current to the field coil. The excitation concept is first developed in theory, then presented using an analytical model and FEA, and lastly investigated with a prelimininary experimental setup.
In this work design rules for a novel brushless excitation system for externally excited synchronous machines are discussed. The concept replaces slip rings with a fullbridge active rectifier and a controller mounted on the rotor. An AC signal induced from the stator is used to charge the rotor DC link. The DC current for the rotor excitation is provided from this DC link source. Finite element analysis of an existing machine is used to analyze the practicability of the excitation system.
This paper discusses the optimal control problem for increasing the energy efficiency of induction machines in dynamic operation including field weakening regime. In an offline procedure optimal current and flux trajectories are determined such that the copper losses are minimized during transient operations. These trajectories are useful for a subsequent online implementation.
Die Zukunftsfähigkeit des Personalmanagements lässt sich daran festmachen, dass in der Organisation qualitativ und quantitativ ausreichend Personal zur Erfüllung des Organisationszwecks in dynamischen Umfeldern zur Verfügung steht. Einen wichtigen Ansatzpunkt stellen die Flexibilisierung der Personalausstattung sowie die institutionelle und strukturelle Öffnung von Organisationen in Richtung mehr Agilität dar. Darauf aufbauend muss das Personalmanagement selbst durch neue Arbeitsweisen und Praktiken innovativer werden und zusätzlich zu seinem stabilen Kern ein zweites agiles Betriebssystem entwickeln. Das zeitlich und strukturell abgestimmte Zusammenspiel des stabilen und agilen Betriebssystems ermöglicht dann die gleichzeitige Nutzung von exploitativen und explorativen Praktiken. Um die Agilitätsagenda des Personalmanagements weiter voranzutreiben, benötigt es einen systematischen Umgang mit der Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Agilitätsdimensionen, die Entwicklung von Instrumenten sowie Zielsetzungen, die ein agiles Personalmanagement verfolgen sollte.
Mit der Überarbeitung der DIN EN 50173 (VDE 0800-173) Serie, wurden unter anderem die optischen Übertragungsstreckenklassen ersatzlos gestrichen. Um die so entstandene Lücke zu schließen, hat das deutsche Gremium DKE GUK 715.3 „Informationstechnische Verkabelung von Gebäudekomplexen“ neue Klassen erarbeitet, die in der DIN VDE 0800- 173-100 „Klassifizierung von Lichtwellenleiter-Übertragungsstrecken“ im Juni 2019 veröffentlicht wurden. Die Norm klassifiziert Lichtwellenleiter Übertragungsstrecken für anwendungsneutrale Kommunikationskabelanlagen nach DIN EN 50173-1.
Sie dient Benutzern, eine breite Palette von Anwendungen zu ermöglichen, die Auswahl des Verkabelungssystems zu erleichtern, eine zukunftssichere Klassifizierung von LWL-Verkabelungen zu generieren und dazu, Systemanforderungen zu beschreiben.
Die in der Norm definierten Klassen beschreiben die Anforderungen an die Übertragungsstrecken und basieren auf einer maximal zulässigen Einfügedämpfung in dB für maximale Übertragungsstreckenlängen, wobei zusätzlich das Bandbreitenlängenprodukt berücksichtigt wird.
